Primary settling tanks are widely used to remove wastewater TSS and BOD.

Primary treatment
Larger, more slowly biodegradable solids settle and are removed as sludge.
Fine and dissolved solids remain in suspension and are contained in the effluent.
Normally, primary settling tanks are designed to provide 1.5–2.5 hours of detention.
But performance is adversely affected by short circuiting, hydraulic stability, temperature and wind.
