Os• ilit,a. George Tuttle II lost a lot of his family from tuberculosis. His sister Julia, his father and mother, and his grandparents on the Tuttle side.

Jul 1a died a terrible death because of treatment in an early ti,ieatment center run by an Adventist man who did not know what he was doing. The fiasco is· described· in a letter written by a friend of the family, Willa New.an, to mother. The latter wrote the letter in her old age as she remanbered it. I prize the letter highly and will make a copy and put in this genealogy. (See pp. ____ .) WT 3/5/00

r BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

GEORGE WASHINGTON TUTTLE II

1. ,t;..et,u,-er.-11 I~ t +- ')p r1 fl 9

Born on Cook Street, Springfield, Illinois, on May 4, 1864. The house is now occupieg by Edward's Laundry.

2. George and his sister, Julia, lived with their parents, George and Elizabeth Tuttle, and their grandparents, Smith and Emeline -6md:±a-Z) Tuttle, and the latter's son, Silas, in a log cabin west of Loami, Illinois, about twenty miles south of Springfield.

They all lived together there until the parents and grandparents died of Tuberculosis. George was about twelve when they died.

3. Silas Tuttle took Ge~rge to the Crissy family who owned the land that later became the Washington Park in Springfield. They cared for him a few years. Silas took Julia to the Jersey Colburns at Loami. They reared her.

5. When George was a young man he attended Bible studies in a home where he met Ora Belle Highland who became his wife. They joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church and became lifetime members of the Springfield, illinois, Adventist church. George was elder for a ver:· long time and sometimes preached on Sabbaths. He was a student of the Bible.

skilled 6. George was a/carpenter and both of his sons followed in his footsteps.

He and son, Ralph, were noted for framing houses.

7. George made v1.o.1 ins. He purchased fine woods from a dealer in Chicago for the violins. There are several in the family now: Wilma has two, Jeanne has one, and Laura has one. They reside in their cases, unused, al though Wilma, Jeanne and Jerome all had some lessons.

8. George was a gardener and a beekeeper. His letters are full of references to these avocations.

9. George was an artist. He completed a correspondence course in pen and pencil drawings as illustration. He did a self-portrait that Jerome has hanging on his wall at home, and he made portraits of his son Ralph and granddaughter, Wilm which are in Wilma's possession. When Ralph died, lots of his drawings for the correspondence course fell to Wi.lJila.

10. George was a writer of letters par excellence. Wilma has a collection of a hundred or more. Two are included with this paper. He was a faithful correspondent with the Earle Tuttles in Aloha, Oregon.

Notes for SARAH TUTTLE: Sarah Tuttle was merely a flirt, but two separate incidents have guaranteed her place in history. At a court held in New Haven, May 1, 1660, Jacob Murline and Sarah Tuttle were prosecuted for "sinful dalliance". They were accused of "sitting down on a chest together, his arm about her waist and her arm upon his should or about his neck, and continuing in this sinful position about half an hour, in which time he kissed her and she kissed him, and they kissed one another", as the witnesses testify. This complaint was made by Sarah's father under a law that whosoever should inveigle or draw away the affections of any maid or maid servant for himself or others, without first obtaining the consent of her parents or guardians, should pay, besides all the damages the parent might sustain, 40 shillings for the first offense, and for the second towards the same person, 4 pounds and for the third, fined, imprisoned and corporally punished, as the Plantation court may direct.

The term "inveigling" appears to have had rather wide implications. There were cases in which the young man charged with this offense had done nothing more than to walk with the girl on a country road. Young women who consented to advances from the men were also looked upon with legal disfavor. Mr. Tuttle pleaded that Jacob had endeavored to steal away his daughter's affections.

Additionally, the Governor declared that "the business for which they were warned to the Court he had heard in private at his house which he related to stand thus; on the day John Potter was married, Sarah Tuttle went to Mr. Murline's for some three hours. Mr. Murline bid her go to her daughters in the other room, where they fell into speech of John Potter & his wife, that they were both lame, upon which Sarah Tuttle said that she wondered what they would do at night whereupon Jacob came in a tooke away or took up her gloves; Sarah desired him to give her the gloves, to which he answered he would do so, if she would give him a kiss, upon which they sate downe together, his arrne being about her & her arme upon his shoulder or about he necke & he kissed her & shee him, or they kissed one another, continuing in this posture about half an houre. Mrs. Mur1ine now in Court said that she heard her say, she wondered what they would doe at night & she replied they must sleep, but there was company with her in the roome, and she was in a strait; but it is matter of sorrow & shame to her."
