Studies Show Fiber Lowers CholesterolA recent study in the Journal of Nutrition showed a higher intake of dietary fiber may decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Researchers examined the association between dietary fiber and the serum concentration of C-reactive protein (a possible predictor of cardiovascular problems) using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2000. Among 3,920 participants, scientists found those with higher dietary fiber intake had lower C-reactive protein concentration.

A study completed in 2003 followed 9,776 adults for 19 years who were free of cardiovascular disease at the beginning of the study.

2 Researchers identified 1,843

incident cases of coronary heart disease and 3,762 incident cases of cardiovascular disease. Those who ate the highest amount of fiber (with an average of 20.7 grams per day) were 12% less likely to develop coronary heart disease than those who ate the lowest amount of fiber. This demonstrates fiber’s ability to naturally reduce cholesterol.

Psyllium: The Exotic Fiber That’s Good for Your HeartDeep in the farmlands of northwestern India and southern Pakistan grows the bushy Plantago ovata plant, known locally as ispaghula or isabgol. This herb, commonly called psyllium in North America, is regarded worldwide as one of the best sources of heart-healthy soluble fiber—the main soluble fiber in FiberWise. The scientific evidence is so compelling for psyllium’s cardiovascular benefits, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the claim that “diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 7 grams of soluble fiber per day from psyllium husk may reduce the risk of heart disease.” One serving of FiberWise Drink provides 3.4 grams of psyllium husk fiber—that’s over 40% more psyllium husk per serving than in Metamucil® Smooth Texture Drink! In 1989, researchers examined psyllium fiber’s ability to lower serum cholesterol levels in 75 people with elevated cholesterol. The patients were treated with a Step I diet (<30% total calories from fat) for 12 weeks before receiving a placebo or 3.4 grams of psyllium (equivalent to 1 teaspoon) three times a day for 8 weeks. Those receiving the psyllium fiber achieved a 4.8% reduction in their total cholesterol level and an 8.2% reduction in their LDL cholesterol level.

Another study, conducted with men with type 2 diabetes and mildly elevated cholesterol levels, found that those who received 5.1 g of psyllium fiber twice daily for 8 weeks had lowered their serum cholesterol level by 8.9% and their LDL cholesterol level by 13%.

Finally, a study conducted in 2000 found that psyllium consumption lowered total cholesterol by 4% and LDL cholesterol by 7% in people already eating a low-fat diet.
