The foundaon of the church is Christ (1 Cor. 3.11). The teachings of Christ reveal His will so followers can build a life that will withstand life’s storms (Mahew 7.24-27). The work of Christ on the cross and the word of Christ in the Bible provide the solid base needed to build up Jesus’ church. What does it mean to build on Christ? Disciples of Christ hon- or the lordship of Christ. Churches of Christ obey the words of Christ. Over me, every Chrisan and congregaon are tested to see if their founda- on will hold. Rains, winds, and floods are temptaons and trials that prove the foun- daon of your faith. Life experiences test whether you truly love and trust Jesus. When your heart, mind, and soul are grounded in Him, no force on earth can defeat you. Churches built on Christ resist the temptaon to be popular rather than loyal. Lives built on Christ aim to be holy and not just happy. Marriages built on Christ are more about service than pleasure. Hope built on Christ is about faithful living rather than wishful thinking. The idea of building suggests two things: connecon and progress (Ephesians 2:20- 22). Building materials join or adhere to each other in order to make a single struc- ture from many parts. The result is harmony and structural integrity. Building also implies forward or upward movement. The result is growth: improvement or enlarge- ment. Shoddy construcon is a problem with buildings both physical and spiritual, so inspect your foundaon. Do your hopes rest on shiſting sand or solid rock?

    Building Up Christ’s Church Aubrey Johnson

    W hen building a house, you begin with a founda-tion. The foundation of the church is Christ (1 Cor. 3.11). The teachings of Christ reveal His will so

    followers can build a life that will withstand life’s storms (Matthew 7.24-27). The work of Christ on the cross and the word of Christ in the Bible provide the solid base needed to build up Jesus’ church.

    An Elder’s Prayer Jimmy England

    A s a member of a congregation of God’s church, you

    will often hear an elder say “We are praying for the

    congregation.” As an elder, I want to let you know

    what I pray for you to know and have.

    There are obviously specific times and situations specific pray-

    ers are offered up. There are health issues, struggles with sin,

    relationship heartaches, and many other

    things that cause anguish in this life that

    we know about and pray about.

    But there is still more. My prayer for you

    surpasses relief from earthly situations

    and struggles. One of my most sincere

    desires and prayers for you is seen in

    Ephesians chapter 3 when Paul is praying

    for the congregation at Ephesus while he

    was in prison. ” For this reason, I kneel before the Father, from

    whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its

    name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen

    you with power through his spirit in your inner being so that

    Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that

    you, being rooted and established in love, may have power,

    together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and

    high and deep is the love of Christ…”

    I have seen this power displayed. I have seen a Christian moth-

    er, at her son’s funeral, comfort those around her, telling them

    everything is OK because of the love of Christ she knows. I have

    seen a Christian friend, who at the point of death, look up from

    his bed and smile at me and tell me that we will go fishing

    again together in heaven someday.

    When we begin to understand the love of Christ with the inner-

    most parts of our being, many people and things that “get un-

    der our skin” no longer have power over

    us. We see and know a peace that pass-

    es the understanding of the world. We

    begin to see people the way God’s sees

    people. Our behavior, which is now mo-

    tivated by love, surpasses our

    knowledge, and is filled to the measure

    of all the fullness of God. We truly re-

    flect the love of God in our lives and are

    a blessing to all. People’s lives are better because of us being in

    their lives. This is what God wants us to be.

    This prayer I have is not unrealistic. It’s a promise from scrip-

    ture to those who diligently seek Him. The bible will transform

    God’s people to become something different from the world, if

    we choose to allow it.

    I pray that you know and understand this love. I pray that your

    heart belongs to God and that you are different because of the

    family you are now a part of. I pray you know a peace that only

    comes from this love.

    W e have been studying about giving some lately. I

    would like to encourage you to consider giving

    some of your time to get to know our youth. We

    have kids here that have many talents. Some play various in-

    struments in school bands and or-

    chestras. Some are very active in

    sports, ballet, hunting, or academic

    bowls. I could go on and on. Get to

    know them and ask what they are

    involved in. Who knows, you might

    share some interests and you might

    be able to give them a pointer or two

    you have learned that might benefit them. When we take the

    time to get to know them, they will be more likely to come to

    us in their times of need.

    After attending various events and activities with our young

    people, I find that I benefit from being in their space. They are

    usually upbeat and happy and their moods can be contagious.

    They have been an encouragement to me in the way they are

    willing to take on responsibilities that take them out of their

    comfort zone. Their willingness to try is an inspiration to me. If

    you have never attended a Lads-to-Leaders convention, you are

    missing out. The talents of our kids will

    amaze you. To see them step out of

    their comfort zone and give a speech,

    lead a song, learn a book of the Bible,

    etc., is encouraging. You might say,

    “How do you know they are stepping

    out of their comfort zone?” Well, when

    you see them visibly shaking to the

    point that you wonder if they are going to be able to complete

    their task, you know they will be stronger when they finish.

    I will make you this promise. If you take the time to get to

    know our kids here at our congregation, it will be time well in-

    vested and you will both benefit from your efforts!
