LETTER FROM THE EDITOR AND WEBMASTER- DAVID GRAY

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Summer. Much like last year, you are able to purchase your yearly membership in the HOA as well as pay for your boat storage, on our website. As 2016 memberships open starting in January, now is a great time to think about continuing your membership in our HOA. Membership is $20.00 if paid by April 15. Late fee of $5.00 will apply if paid after April 15 th. As always, if there is anything you feel should be on our website, have any interesting news items/articles of local interest or you have any comments or feedback, please email me at [email protected]. In addition, with Hurricane season fast approching, if you would like pictures of your house, once it is safe to re-enter our community, please provide your Mariner's Cove address, and we will reply with pictures of your house. Please note this is via email only.

Also, Please be aware, there is a suggestion box up in the mail box area for people to voice their suggestions or recommendations to the Board.

If there is anything you would like to see in the Beacon, or on the website, please email me at [email protected].

NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT- TIM KAY

Welcome to 2017! I hope everyone had a blessed and joyous holiday season.

Now that winter is upon us and many of our neighbors have either fled to warmer climes or have gone home to their primary residences it is all the more important to keep an eye on the empty homes. Some have installed a red candle in a front window which, when lit, tells us that the interior temperature has dropped to a dangerous level where freezing could take place. If you see such a light on notify your neighbor or someone in the office or on the board. This could prevent serious damage caused by freezing and broken pipes.

We are looking forward to additional improvements in Mariners Cove as the year progresses. More abandoned homes are slated for demolition to be replaced with new homes. A new lift station will be installed on Jennifer Lee and when that project is complete the street will be re-paved. We have no time frame on this but the new lift station is of critical importance. Bulkheads are being repaired or replaced on an as-needed basis. A bow in a bulkhead does not necessarily mean it needs to be repaired. That determination is made on a case-by-case basis and repairs are prioritized.

We meet with our manager on a regular basis and items discussed are usually what we are able to see

Page 4: I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable - Mariner's Cove ...mchoa.webs.com/2017 Beacon Jan to March.docx  · Web viewLETTER FROM THE EDITOR AND WEBMASTER- DAVID GRAY. ... Set up

throughout the community. If you feel a particular item needs to be addressed you need to contact a board member so that we can put that item on our agenda. Our phone numbers and e-mail addresses are on the Beacon’s front cover and there is a suggestion box at the mailboxes where you can put your recommendations.

Our membership numbers in 2016 were the lowest in several years. The board represents our members and only our members. If you choose to not join the HOA you have no representation especially in the event of any mediation regarding violations of the Rent Justification Act. Your membership also entitles you to attend all of the HOA functions, especially the Family Picnic in August.

All activities are posted on the signboard at the intersection of Pine and Joann and we try to post the same on the board at the mailboxes. If you are ever unsure of an event, contact a board member.

Let’s hope that we have a mild, uneventful winter and a quick return to Spring!

VICE PRESIDENT- MIKE LHOTSKY

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. We just attended the annual Christmas party for the community and those who attended had a great time. Lots of good food, sharing and enjoying each other's company was had by all. Thanks to June and her team for the work and effort they put into the party... a great time! As we get through this season, we can all look forward to spring when the temps warm and the fish bite!

Keep in mind that our community does not consist of just houses, but the people who live in them. Let's work together to make Mariners' Cove the best community in the area.

I have placed a suggestion box at the mailbox area and welcome your views and concerns. As we continue to hold meetings with Michael and the staff of Mariners' Cove, this information proves helpful as we all see things differently.

I would like to thank all the people who support the association by participating in the annual events and happenings. If you have not yet signed up, please do so. It adds to the fun!

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH- NICK D’AMICO

Your Neighborhood Watch Members along with the NCPC provide steps you can take to help keep your family and your neighborhood safe.

Know where your children are. Have your children let you know where they are going or have them ask your permission before leaving the house. Give them a time to check in or be home and have them, when possible, leave a phone number of where they will be.

Help children learn important phone numbers. If you can teach your children to remember their home address and home phone number and your work and cell phone numbers do so, if not have them written on a card for them to carry with them at all times. Tell your children where you will be and the best way to reach you.

Page 5: I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable - Mariner's Cove ...mchoa.webs.com/2017 Beacon Jan to March.docx  · Web viewLETTER FROM THE EDITOR AND WEBMASTER- DAVID GRAY. ... Set up

Set limits on where your children can go in the neighborhood. You do not want them crossing busy roads, or playing in abandoned homes.

Get to know your children’s friends. If possible meet the parents before letting your children go to their homes. Keep a list of their phone numbers. Ask if your children will be supervised.

Choose a safe house in the neighborhood. Pick a neighbor’s house where your children can go if they need help. Point out other places they can go such as the Community office.

Teach children to settle arguments with words, not fists. Walk away from fist fights, talk out problems with your children and what to do when confronted with bullies. Let them know that taunting and teasing can hurt friends and make enemies.

Work together with your neighbors. Become acquainted with your neighbors and their children so you can look out for one another watching out for suspicious and unusual behavior in the neighborhood.

Set up a code word or password. This can be used if someone other than you is coming to pick up your children. Criminals often will try get children to come with them by saying Mommy or Daddy are hurt and they can take them.

DMHOA

DMHOA meets monthly on the 4th Monday of the month at Angola Beach and Estates. The meeting is open to all. As a member of our HOA, you are automatically a member of DMHOA.

Boat Yard- ED OLLIS

Thank you to all the HOA members that will be utilizing the boat yard for winter storage of their boat/trailer and/or watercraft. Winter storage of your boat is FREE. Please remember all boats/trailers and/or watercraft are required to have the HOA member’s name affixed to the unit. Any watercraft or trailer that cannot be identified as belonging to an HOA member will be removed from the lot and placed on the road.

I ask that you contact me BEFORE placing your watercraft or trailer in the yard or on the road. I make every effort to utilize all the space available to the HOA so as many boats/ trailers/ and/or watercraft as possible can be stored. While you may place your watercraft or trailer on a specific location within the storage yard or on the road, I reserve the right to move your watercraft or trailer in order to maximize all available space. Winter storage space is available on a first come, first served basis. No watercraft is guaranteed a specific storage location within the boat yard or on the road. As a reminder, please adhere to the no parking signs posted near the mailboxes.

As a reminder, there is $35 summer storage fee for all trailers and/or boats left in the yard or on the road during the spring/summer months. We collect this fee to pay the volunteers for assisting in moving the

watercraft and/or trailers for the purpose of grass cutting and weed whacking. The 2017 summer storage fee must be paid by June 30th. Anyone, wanting to store a trailer after June 30th, will be required to pay a late fee plus the $35 storage fee prior to the trailer being placed in the boat yard. We will remind everyone again of this new payment policy in the winter/spring Beacon(s).

I hope everyone enjoyed the 2016 boating season and I look forward to assisting you with your winter storage needs.

One of the amenities provided by the Homeowners Association is onsite watercraft storage. Last year more Homeowners than ever took advantage of this amenity and the boat storage lot was completely filled to capacity. I would encourage anyone that is interested in onsite storage to contact me as early as possible since storage is limited and is only available on a first come first served basis to paid HOA members. The boat storage lot is located at the foot of Knoll Way. Lot storage is $35 and covers the year-round maintenance of the boat yard. I will begin taking space reservations April 15.

Notes from the Secretary- Lynn Spicer

Hi everyone...just a note to say I am enjoying my time as the Secretary of your Homeowners Association and I would encourage everyone to join this group and become involved. It gives you a clearer understanding of what is going on in your neighborhood, you get to enjoy the Pool in the summer for a ridiculously low price, you meet your neighbors, you get to voice your opinions if you come to the General meetings and we have a great "free" picnic for you to enjoy in August.
