17 - 22 Unseen Passage

The problem of water pollution bypesticides can be understood only incontext, as part of the whole to which itbelongs - the pollution of the totalenvironment of mankind. The pollutionentering our waterways comes from manysources: radioactive wastes from reactors, laboratories, hospitals, domestic wastesfrom cities, chemical wastes from factories. To these is added a new kind offallout -the chemical sprays applied to vegetables, fruits and crops in gardens, forests andfields. Many of the chemical agents in thisalarming melange initiate and augment theharmful effects of radiations through waterusage. Ever since the use of chemicalsprays, the problems of water purificationhave become complex and in rivers, allwastes combine to produce deposits thatscientists refer to as gunk. For the most partthis pollution is unseen and invisible andalso a threat of widespread contaminationof ground water. Rain, falling on the landwith chemical sprayed, settles downthrough pores and cracks in soil and rockand storing itself deep as ground water. Andso, in a real and very frightening sense, pollution of the ground water is pollutionof water everywhere.

18. The essential of the author's argumentin the passage is(A) that pests are numerous.(B) that there are numerous reasons

for contamination of watersupplies ..

(C) there are many dangers fromradioactive wastes.

(D) that pests are directly harmingwater supplies'

19. The word 'melange' means :-(A) transformation(B) Combination(C) Association(D) infiltration

20. There is a threat of widespreadcontamination of ground waterbecause __(A) rains are scarce these days(B) less number of trees are planted(C). chemicals and pesticides are

vastly used(D) rivers are getting dry

21. The word 'gunk' refers: -(A) to microbes found in water

supplies(B) to the domestic water supplies(C) to the nuclear fallouts in rivers(D) to the unidentifiable deposits

found in water

17. The word pollution in.line 1 means:-22. All the following words means

(A) disease 'chemicals' except :-(B) infection (A) Pesticides

(C) sickness (B) Substances(C) Pollutants(D) contamination (D) Sands
