Olin Corporation in an agreement with other companies, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is conducting remedial activities at the Western Sand and Gravel Site, Burrillville, Rhode Island. Included in these activities is groundwater monitoring utilizing monitoring wells, some of which are located in and near the residential area along Pulaski Road. On August 27, 1990 Olin contractors reported that locks from some of our monitoring wells had been broken from the protective casings and that an oily material and sand had been introduced to the wells. Several thousand dollars will probably be spent by Olin in response to the vandalism. In addition the wells, which were installed in 1988 at a cost of approximately $20,000, may have been rendered useless. Contamination of the groundwater aquifer may also have been caused by the vandalism. Again, this letter is to inform you of the vandalism incident. Please let us know if you need further details. Because of this incident and other minor vandalism incidents we have experienced in the past, we would appreciate any increased surveillance of the Pulaski Road residential area and Western Sand and Gravel, Inc. property area that you could provide. Please do not hesitate to call me at 615/336-4073 with any questions. Sincerely, OLIN CORPORATION Robert D. McCaleb Sr. Environmental Project Specialist jmm OLIN C O RP ORATION
