RULES Recently a Bullet in arrived fron one of our nenber clubs which contained quite a long a r t i c l e on the above-mentioned subject, Many of the points brought up were well taken, but the aain issue t o ne appears to be not so much the judging systen as the applying of the ru les of the systea,

So i n answer t o our fr iendly edi tors , J e r r i and Brian, may I take just a few nonents and answer the c r i t i c i s m brought up by your good selves. You re fe r , f i r s t l y , t o the judge who gave no points f o r con- d i t ion when judging a b r i l l i a n t uncirculated s e t of la rge cents, and secondly, with reference t o the judging of neatne138 you quote tha t one judge gave i t the f u l l nark of 10 points while the other judge gave i t a t o t a l of 3 points. But these instances are the r e s u l t of bad judg- ing and i n no way cas ts ref lect ions upon the O.N.A. systerar I would venture t o say tha t , and I q ~ o t e , " t h e f a r superior- judging systen t o which you refer i n the U,S.A.tfwouZd f&e no bet ter a t the hands of these s w e judges. My point i s tha t the best judging systen i n the world w i l l f a l l down i f your judges DO NOT follow the judging ru les ,

Speaking with B i l l English on t h i s very sabject quite recently, both of us agreed t h a t nany of our judges refuse t o follow the judging r ~ l e s as l a i d down and, speaking as a judge of some years standing, and having acted as a head judge on sone occasions, I f e e l I can speak with sone knowledge on t h i s subject, and I can assure you judges who don' t judge by the ru les prevalent a t t ha t show I do not ask t o judge. I can lend a synpathetic ear t o exhibitors who have worked hard t o put on a f i r s t c lass exhibit only to lose f i r s t prize or best of show through bad judging.

I offer the suggestion tha t perhaps we would be be t te r t o i n s i s t t ha t our judges abide by O.N.A, or whatever ru le s are i n e f fec t , I f they do not, then I f e e l the head judge should s e t the i r judging point; t o one side and re- judge the exhibits hinself . This would a t l e a s t ensure a f a i r shake t o the exhib%tor,

I t r u s t you w i l l accept these coments i n the s p i r i t i n which they are given. for a f te r all we are interested i n the sane end re-- s u l t s and tha t i s to inprove the judging, and by so doing to irnprove the exhibitors chances of winning,
