Model AUSTIN , MORRIS 1800 & WOLSELEY 18/85 Sheet G - 4 Issue 4 High Compression Pistons

Further power can be obtained by fitting MSB competition pist6ns C-AEH 853 (4 off) to the standard connecting rods. The rods should. be balanced end-for~end, and connecting rod bearing set C-18G 8022 should be used.

For maximum power ·080" oversize competition lightweight forged pistons are available in this size only (3·2390" bore) as a set of 4 Part No. C-AJJ 3375.

Cylinder head gasket C-AEH 768 is the only one suitable for a tuned engine.

Twin Carburetters Single carburetter versions can be converted to twin by fitting kit .C-AJJ 3391

which contains one additional carburetter, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold and front pipe assembly with necessary sundry parts. On Mk.I cars the inlet manifold should be matched to cylinder head C-AHT 100 and polished throughout. There is no polished head for Mk.II cars with l8H engine number prefix but similar polishing ant matching should be undertaken before fitting twin carburetters.

For maximum top end performance twin 2" carburetters C-AUD 279 can be fitted using Kit C-AJJ 3374 which contains new inlet manifold and necessary additional par

Carburetter flare pipes C-AHT 145 will fit these carburetters and C-ZHH 7209 f It" carburetters to reduce blow back of the mixture with high lift camshafts.

Competition Exhaust Manifold Three branch manifold C-12H 2710 must be used with the twin carburetters. If t

car has already been fitted with a Stage I conversion, only· exhaust front pipe C-AH 153 will be required. Otherwise, fit silencer C-AHT 104 and tail pipe C-AHT 105 together with clips C-AHT 106 (2 off) and C-AHT 97 (1 off) to complete the system.

Competition Camshaft For maximum power, fit competition camshaft C-AEH 770 (See Data Sheet 2-4), bt

the bottom end torque will be reduced. Use the steel timing chain wheels C-AEH 771 12H 244 with this camshaft. On Mk.II cars it will be necessary to fit an electric fuel pump such as AUF 400 as the competition camshafts do not have the pump drive (

With this high lift camshaft, the exhaust valves will foul the cylinder block unless it is machined. Use a flat cutter 1·531" (38.9%) dia. with a 1/16" (1.6%) radius. Machine the block by hand .14" (3.~) deep, using the exhaust valve guide : a head as the location for the cutter.

Distributor Use competition distributor C-BHA 4415 which has no vacuum advance, but has t

correct automatic advance curve. Set this 80 B.T.D.C. static.

Tappet Screws Stronger adjusting screws C-AEH 766 (8 off) are available which have no oil

drilling, but the ball will be satisfactory splash-fed.

Valve Springs The Stage I cylinder head C-AHT 100 is fitted with Inner valve springs IH 72~

and outer springs C-AHH 7264. These will reach valve bounce at about 6400 rpm witt the standard camshaft or 6700 with the competition camshaft. If even higher revolt tions are required, inner springs C-AHH 7265 may be fitted, bpt the whOE valve trc will then be subject to greater strain.

It is essential to use Crankshaft C-12H 2928 (nitrided) or C-AEH 822 (nitridE and cross-drilled) at this stage of tune.

Suspension Pressures

For normal use, the suspension pressure is set to pr~vide the correct trim height + til (+ 6%) and is about 245 Ib/sq.in. (17·2 kg/cm ). This is also satisfactory for competition use, but may be increased slightly during a rally to compensate for any settling t~at may occur. On no account should the pressure exceed 275 Ib/sq.in. (19.4 kg/cm ).

Bottom Arm Bushes

If the front suspension settles following severe use, the most likely cause is failure of the original bottom arm bushes. Four Special bushes are now available in a Bottom Bush Set C-AJJ 3369, which should be fitted for any competition use.

Supplementary Bump stops - Rear

When the rear of the car is very heavily laden, a~ditional support for the rear suspension can be obtained by fitting Rear Bump Kit C-AJJ 3355. This kit is particularly desirable for severe rally conditions when the car may leave the ground when heavily laden. It is necessary to drill and tap the rear radius arm to mount these, but the kit contains the necessary instructions.

Heavy Duty Bump stops - Front

Front suspension movement can b,e additionally controlled by fitting Front Bump Rubber Kit C-AJJ 3354 in place of the existing bump stops. These may make the suspension rather harsh for normal use, but' are desirable to absorb some of the shock loadings of rally use.

Rear Anti-roll Bar

To increase roll resistance and decrease understeer fit anti-roll bar kit C-AJJ 3376 between rear suspension arms. Full fitting instructions are supplied With kit.

Sump Protection

A full width Sump Shield C-AHT 186 is available to protect the power unit for normal rally use. For particularly severe events when the full weight of the car may drop onto boulders, it is recommended that an additional Gearbox Protector Plate C-AHT 187 is' fitted to spread the load of abnormal i mpacts. A rubber sandwich plate is provided to act as a further cushion. The resultant effectiveness was proved in the London - Sydney Marathon; but obviously the car must be fitted with an oil cooler to counteract loss 6f airflow over the gearbox casing.

Petrol Tank Shield

The standard petrol tank can be protected from damage by fitting Petrol Tank Shield C-AHT 175. Besides preventing damage by flying stones, this will also stand a lot of abrasion when driving ttie car on rutted tracks •

STAGE I TUNING KITS Sheet Y - 1 Issue 3

GREATER FLEXIBILITY AND ECONOMY WITH FULL WARRANTY BACKING

Stage I Tuning Kits are now available for the SINGLE CARBURETTER front-wheeldrive range of BMC cars. These conversions, which use mainly standard parts, are offered on the 850 and 998cc Mini, 1100 and 1300, and early 1800 models, (not Mk.II) whether with automatic or manual transmission and are backed by full BHC Service Warranty.

INCREASED POWER WITH IMPROVED FLEXIBILITY AND ECONOMY

The object of these conversions is to provide greater power throughout engine-speed range thus giving better flexibility and response to the throttle. This makes the cars more pleasant to drive and, by giving increased power where it is most needed, improves their already renowned safety qualities.

Performance tests indicate that there is a general increase ~n power varying between 16 and 21 per cent, depending upon the model concerned. This extra power throughout the speed range means that there is from 20 to 25 per cent more power available for acceleration - a most important factor in the overcrowded ccnditions which exist on most roads today.

The increased flexibility with the stage I conversions, in conjunction with the 9i to 1 compression ratios, can also give an improvement in overall fuel consumptions. This improvement, under comparative cruising conditions, will be in the order of 12 to 15 per cent.

HOW IT'S DONE

Cylinder heads are prepared by hand to give perfect combustion shape, balancing together porting form and finish to give the best possible flow. The kits are then carefully packed by British Leyland Special Tuning Department who supply them via the Distributor/Dealer network to order, who are responsible for fitting them. New cars cannot be converted at the Factory.

All the kits contain a polished manifold and cylinder head, fully assembled with valves, springs, studs, joints, plugs, and detailed fitting instructions. With the exception of the Mini range, the kits are supplied with a new complete exhaust system, designed to minimise power loss whilst giving ample silencing. The 998cc Mini Kits are supplied with just a new silencer assembly. Slight variations for the Traveller and Countryman are catered for by adding Suffix A to Part Number when ordering.

ModelALL HYDROLASTIC CARS Sheet y ~ 5 Issue 1 AIDS TO TOWING

Stability with Hydrolastic Comfort Special progressive Rear Bump Stop Kits were originally designed for the

severe stresses of international car rallies~ The Mini ones were used on the Monte Carlo Rally winners, and 1800's in the London-Mexico World Cup Rally were similarly fitted with the same parts as listed here. They should not be confused with certain other assistors currently on the market.

They will support the extra weight on the rear when towing or carrying heavy loads, yet be unobtrusive when driving without the weight.

Your car radiator will be able to cope with the additional load if maintained in good condition, but to keep your oil temperature at the best level an oil cooler is strongly recommended. Once again these have been fully tested under extreme conditions of car rallying and will ensure that your oil will withstand the increased loading. '

Single carburetter models do not give such high speed perfoFIDance as twin carburetter models, but their low speed pulling power can be made much better by fitting BLMC Stage I Tuning Kits" These consist of a polished fully assembled cylinder head, and in most cases a complete new free flow exhaust system. Note that certain Automatic Transmission versions are different.

The performance kits below consist of twin carburetter conversions for the models listed, and again the new car warranty is NOT a~f~cted.

ModelGENERAL Sheet z - 1 Issue 4

The following information is issued in order to facilitate the choice of a suitable final drive ratio for any particular application.

The table indicates the wheel revolutions per mile for the tyre size commonly used on British Leyland vehicles. From this the vehicle speed per 1000 engine revolutions per minute can be calculated using the formula.

/ 000 60,000 K P H /1000 RPM _ 96,560 M.P.H. 1 R.P.M. = A x B or • • • • •• - A x B

where A B

= Final Drive Ratio = Wheel revolutions per mile

This formula gives the speed in direct top gear only but the equivalent road speed in any intermediate gear can be calculated by dividing this by ,the gearbox gear ratio.
