PURPOSETo explain

That implementing Environmental Management Systems (EMS) is a good tool to minimize environmental risk, but can vary widely in results, and will depend strongly on organizational politics and power structures

That we cannot face the future with solutions from the past.

WHY?

Now more than ever the oil and gas industry is faced with a need for change in the way it behaves towards the environment.

To be proactive now will buy precious time and enable good use of resources which will increase profitability in the long run.

Sustainability is a matter of survival.

MACONDO Accident

• 11 good man deaths

• The largest oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry

• Released about 4,900,000 barrels (779,000 m3) of crude oil

• 4,200 square miles (11,000 km²) of the Gulf were re-closed to shrimping

• A potential industry game-changer due to the inevitable higher costs from more stringent regulation and possible higher taxes

• Etc. Etc.

MACONDO Root Causes

• A FAILURE OF INDUSTRY MANAGEMENT:

• Most, if not all, of the failures at Macondo can be traced back to underlying failures of management and comunication.

• Better management of decision making processes within the companies, better comunication within the lease owner and its contractors would have prevented the Macondo accident.

MACONDO avoidance...

The lease owner and other operators should have effective systems in place for integrating the various corporate cultures, internal procedures and decision making protocols of the many diferent contractors involved in drilling a deepwater well.

KEY statements:

SUSTAINABILITY = EFFICIENCY = PROFIT ISO 14001 is just na empty FRAMEWORK. There need to be a strong , visionary and

knowleageable man as CEO. Too much stability petrifies organizations – not

good for changing and challenging times. The unwritten “procedures” need to be managed

proactivelly.
