Solid Organic Waste Streams • Majority of solid organic waste comes from waste
management operations (e.g. PPE, paper, rags,
plastic, wood, filters)
halogenated organics (e.g. >x % PVC)
• All organic waste requires processing to put in a form
suitable for storage and disposal
• Challenges include thermal off gas treatment, gas
generation from radiolysis and suitable immobilization
matrices
• Access to and operability of thermal treatment technologies (high capital & operational cost, off gas treatment (products of incomplete combustion, secondary waste etc)
• Unique waste streams (e.g. organic ion exchange resins)
• Availability of suitable immobilization matrices
• Scalable technologies – mobile & modular
Considerations for management of solid
organic waste
CHALLENGE: the disposal waste acceptance criteria for many facilities
have limits on the volume and/or form of organic solid waste
Organic Waste
Pre-disposal Handbook Series Part I: Technical Overview – provides a concise summary of technical information.
Part II: Annexes* – provide detailed information on technical options, design basis, operational requirements, best practices, lessons learned, emerging technologies
