Dear Moos Families,

As we start the second quarter, students and teachers are continu-

ing their work through IB MYP units. These units are important to stu-

dents’ learning because they foster a global understanding of the world

they live in. Students are able to connect the knowledge they learn in

their classrooms to real world situations.

6-8th grade is continuing their service learning work by participating

in after school programs, helping teachers, volunteering their time, and

making a conscious effort to help others. 8th grade students are begin-

ning the research phase of their community project.

Make sure you check out the Moos web site at mooselementary.org

for additional information. Also, all students are part of at least one

google classroom, ask your child to visit their google classroom to see

what they are learning and how they are doing.

Best Wishes,

Ms. Van Dyke

October was a great and exciting month in sixth grade language and literature and individuals and society! We just finished up our first IB unit for Language and Literature and are in the process of working on our personal narratives. In second quarter, we will start our nonfiction unit and new novel, Zlata’s Diary. Please make sure your child is completing weekly homework. In individuals and society, we finished our first unit over mapping skills. The students will now be working on their Ancient Mesopota-mia Unit. Check out the students working on their maps below.

From Ms. Mansour (Science),

Don’t forget to fill out your Resource Kit form to receive free materials on

how to save energy in your home. The more kits our school applies for the

more money we receive for our Science program.

The web site is www.resourcekit.org

From Ms. Tobiason (Design),

Students in year 3 are continuing to build their claw designs. They need to

build a claw that grabs a piece of paper, a can of vegetables, and a maga-

zine. Students in year 2 and 1 are continuing their work with computer

graphics and drawing their adventures.

Sixth grade is doing a wonderful job wrapping up their first weaving pro-ject. Seventh grade completed their Day of the Dead printmaking and eighth grade just finished their first still life drawings.

Miss Frayer received a “Little Kids Rock” grant this year

which provided 26 keyboards and 26 ukuleles for our music

Program. The students got to play them for the first time

this week!

Gracias!

October was a very fun and exciting month in sixth grade math and science! We just finished up our ratios, rates and proportions unit

for math. We are now starting our Percent’s unit. We also went on an amazing field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry. While

there, we got to experience an awesome robotics exhibit! Check out some pictures from our visit!

Dear Moos Families, After a great first quarter, I am excited to see even more growth in our stu-dents as we continue working with our rigorous Eureka math curriculum. Over the past few months, our 7th and 8th grade students have exhibited a variety of IB learner attributes within the classroom. Each day, I have seen our stu-dents push their learning by being inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and re-flective learners. This quarter, my goal is to push their independence and model the skills they need to become more balanced. Continue reading to see what grade-level content students will be exposed to this quarter in addition to small-group instruction presented at their individual levels! The 7th grade students will be deepening their understanding of ratios and proportional relationships by solving a variety of percent problems. They will convert between fractions, decimals, and percents to further develop a con-ceptual understanding of percents. To develop a conceptual understanding, students will work with visual models, equations, and proportions. As the les-sons and topics progress, students will solve multi-step percent problems al-gebraically that are related to real-world scenarios. The 8th grade students will be extending what they already know about unit rates and proportional relationships as they continue working with linear equa-tions and their graphs. By the end of this module, students will be able to make connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equa-tions. They will be asked to transcribe equations and solve equations involving one variable and later, two variables. Students will be asked to compare graphs to linear equations as they are exposed to real-world math problems. If you have any questions regarding the learning that will take place during the second quarter, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected] or 630-220-6018. I look forward to meeting more of you at par-ent teacher conferences on Wednesday, November 15.

All the best, Ms. Engelking
