The International Bar Association’sICC Moot Court Manual

Created by the International Bar Association, this manual aims to provide students and educators with a comprehensive guide on how to set up an ICC moot court exercise.

Developed in conjunction with the Open Society Institute, the manual comprises of fi ve individual moot court problems and provides detailed instructions on staging and implementing, from courtroom layout and event timing structures, to detailed witness statements and evidence documents.

All of the problems made available are staged under International Criminal Court (ICC) rules of procedure and evidence, and include many of the elements found in real international trials. This provides an excellent model for an international moot court and means that students from any jurisdiction can participate on equal terms.

Specifi cally designed to facilitate the full moot court experience the manual is an invaluable tool to develop the skills necessary to succeed, including:

• Refi ning question and submission structures

• Putting together clear arguments and quick thinking responses to opposition

• Developing a clear understanding of court procedures and issues when answering judges

Mooting is a unique and invaluable experience that adds tremendous value to any legal education. By way of these materials, the IBA strives to make this experience easily available to students everywhere.

ELSA (The European Law Students’ Association) is an international, independent, non-political, non-profit organization run by and for students. It is comprised of students and recent graduates who are interested in academic and personal excellence in addition to their studies at their universities. ELSA offers law students a perfect platform to develop their existing skills, acquire new skills and meet fellow students and legal professionals throughout Europe.

ELSA members are open-minded, internationally oriented and multilingual and acquire a broader cultural understanding than other law students. Taking part in the various projects and volunteering for the association, they gain direct experiences with foreign legal systems and business practices.

ELSA is represented in around 300 law faculties in the university-based Local Groups of ELSA in 43 countries across Europe. With 40,000 members ELSA is the world’s largest independent law students’ association.

ELSA organises various activities such as conferences, law schools and legal research. Whilst mainly operating within Europe, ELSA has two global projects: ELSA Moot Court Competition and the Student Trainee Exchange Programme.

The ELSA Moot Court Competition is a simulated hearing of the World Trade Organization dispute settlement system. There are Regional Rounds all over the world: the All-American Regional Round, the Asia-Pacific Regional Round, the European Regional Rounds, and the newly established African Regional Round. The Final Oral Round takes place at the WTO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Student Trainee Exchange Programme is a trainee programme that enables law students and young lawyers to gain experience of the substantive and procedural law as well as the culture of another country. Before and during the traineeship, ELSA provides assistance to trainees with finding accommodation, obtaining visas and organising social events to involve the trainee in the daily life of the local community.

If you have any questions about ELSA or its activities, please contact the ELSA International Office at [email protected].
