The UNI Culture and Intensive English Program offers a special summer program designed to enable international students majoring in business or related careers to communicate effectively in English in the business world. In the IBEP, students will not only improve their language skills in business English classes, but also through visits to local businesses and transnational companies, lectures, and workshops provided by experienced company managers and business professors. The program occurs each summer and is approximately four weeks long.

The University of Northern Iowa Culture and Intensive English Program, in conjunction with the UNIBusiness Global Associates of the College of Business Administration, is excited to offer the Intensive Business English Program (IBEP). This special program is designed to enable international students majoring in business or related careers to communicate effectively in English within the business world. During IBEP, students will not only improve their language skills in business English classes, but also through visits to local businesses and transnational companies, lectures, and workshops provided by experienced company managers and business professors. The program occurs each summer and is approximately four weeks long.

The course work introduces and builds upon students’ current knowledge of practical global American English business vocabulary, terminology, idiomatic expressions, conversations, and presentations. The program provides students with articles, textbook excerpts, vocabulary and terminology specifically related to the companies, small businesses, and historical or governmental areas they will visit. Students will be required to take notes, ask questions, participate in discussions, and report on their findings when visiting these sites to indicate understanding of what they have learned.

Course Information

Admission InformationThe IBEP is designed for students who are majoring in a business area in their university or college or have recently graduated with a degree in business or related field (e.g. management, economics, finance, etc.). It is also recommended that students have attained an intermediate level of understanding of English.

It is important for the students to follow an admission process in order to successfully complete the CIEP and U.S. immigrations requirements. All applications must be completed and returned to the CIEP at least two months prior to the starting date of classes. Admission into the Culture and Intensive English Program does not constitute admission into any other academic program at the University of Northern Iowa. To be admitted to the CIEP, students must submit: Completed application form Financial guarantee Deposit of $275 (check, credit card, or money order) Passport copy Recommendation letter describing English proficiency and academic qualifications.

After receiving those documents and payment, the CIEP will send the admission letter, immigration document, the SEVIS receipt, housing contract, and some health forms to be completed by each student. The CIEP will also send a guide on obtaining an Exchange Visitor Visa (J-1).

Upon arrival, students will participate in a three-day mandatory orientation before beginning classes. This process includes a variety of informational sessions, campus tours, and opportunities to meet other CIEP students and staff.

English Exam & Certificate:Students will take a placement exam to evaluate their current abilities in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The tests are evaluated by CIEP teaching staff and the students are placed in the appropriate courses in the CIEP program.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a CIEP IBEP certificate and individual reports concerning progress in the programs.

UNI Campus & Community:The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) campus is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. UNI is a mid-sized university with 12,000 students. UNI has nationally recognized academic programs in the fields of business, teacher education, and fine arts.

The campus has two dining facilities, a library, student union, student health center, computer facilities, counseling center, a wellness and recreation center located within minutes of the student residence halls. All IBEP students have full access to campus facilities.

With a population of 110,00, the Cedar Falls and Waterloo area provides students with the advantages of a large city, in a safe, clean, and peaceful atmosphere perfect for studying and living. Cedar Falls is in northeast Iowa, not far from Chicago and Minneapolis, and is served by the Waterloo, Iowa Municipal Airport (ALO) and the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

AccommodationsSummer program participants will live on the UNI campus in residence halls with one or more roommates. All residence halls are walking distance from classroom buildings. Chaperones can expect to have a single room. Roommates are always the same gender and live in residence halls segregated by floors or wings.

Food service will be provided for the entire program. Your IBEP tuition includes all meals. Participants will eat on campus except for select events off campus such as the welcome party and field trips.

During the summer, there is a large dining hall available on the UNI campus. Students can easily walk to the dining hall for meals and back to classes. If students wish, they can also purchase snacks and food items from one of several vendors on campus.
