A Simple ExampleThe following is a very basic tutorial for creating one or more WPARs using WorkloadPartition Manager (WPM or WPAR Manager) and Live Application Mobility (LAM) torelocate a system WPAR. This example is only meant to familiarize you with theinstallation of WPAR Manager, WPAR Agent and LAM, it is not meant as a real worldscenario.

Please read this entire document before starting, it is not complicated but there a numberof steps to follow.

1. Make VLP reservations for two AIX61 – Power6 LPARs.

So let’s get started…

Create two AIX61 on Power6 VLP reservations (not a group reservation, please do themindividually).

Make sure to use promotional code: 213014 while entering the reservations. This code isrequired to access the Live Application Mobility function

2. Create One WPAR on One POWER6 Partition.

Once the POWER6 reservations are ACTIVE, you must create a WPAR using the VLPweb interface. This will cause the system to reserve an IP address for the WPAR usingthe pool of available IPs in the VLP system.

Go to the VLP reservation info page. Select the reservation action ‘Add WPAR’.Choose a WPAR name and follow the prompts.

On the next page, the ‘Add WPAR’ page, enter a name for your WPAR and click on the‘Add’ button.

It may take up to 10 minutes to create the WPAR on the target partition. You can press‘Back’ to return to the ‘Reservation Details’ page while you wait. While the WPAR isbeing created, the WPAR will be in the TRANSITIONAL state.

3. Get LPAR and WPAR info from reservation page.

Next, you will need the following information from the VLP reservation info page forboth the source and target systems for your WPAR migration. We’ll call the sourcesystem the first reservation and the target system the second reservation:

Collect: LPAR names (you can log in to the WPAR to obtain this) IP addresses Root and user passwords for the LPAR WPAR name Root password for the WPAR Assigned WPAR IP address

4. Install and Configure WPAR Manager. To use IBM(R) PowerVM(TM) Workload Partitions (WPAR) Manager for AIX(R), youmust install the following main components:

WPAR Manager

Install the WPAR Manager software on a single AIX system that will be yourmanagement server.

WPAR Agent

Install the WPAR Agent on every managed server or logical partition within yourmanagement environment.

In this tutorial we will be using the default Apache Derby database. You can also use theDB2 v9.5 database that comes with WPAR Manager, but it is out of scope for thisexample. See the release notes for WPAR manager for more information:/stage/middleware/AIX/WPM/RELEASE-NOTES.wparmgr.txt

LPAR1 will be considered the Server for this installation.

Using either the VPN client or SSH Gateway logon to LPAR1.It is suggested to use the VPN Client, but tunneling with the SSH Gateway can work too.

Open a terminal to LPAR1 and logon with USER ID (i.e. u0000270)

Swich to the ROOT user# su – root

On LPAR1 install the WPAR Manager software as ROOT user:# installp -acXYgd /stage/middleware/AIX/WPM/installp/ppc wparmgt.mgr

Change the size of /var to allow configuration of WPAR Manager:# chfs -a size=800000 /var

Run script to configure to configure WPAR Manager:# /opt/IBM/WPAR/manager/bin/WPMConfig.sh -i console

Accept all the defaults (for ports and settings) and create a password when asked.

Note: Choose a different password than the one listed in this example. This password isyour insurance that other VLP users will not manage your WPARs for you.

WPAR Manager Configuration Summary----------------------------------

WPAR Configuration Complete---------------------------

The configuration of IBM PowerVM Workload PartitionsManager for AIX has completed successfully.

5. Install and Configure WPAR Agents.

Now install the WPAR Agent on LPAR1:# installp -acXYgd /stage/middleware/AIX/WPM/installp/ppc wparmgt.agent

On LPAR1 edit the /etc/hosts file to add the both WPARs and LPAR2’s IP informationfrom the information you gathered above. Each of the LPARs need to know about theother and both need to have the WPAR info.

# vi /etc/hosts

(this is just an example, please add your systems)172.29.145.198 lpar58p682e_pub ---- This is the LPAR2’s hostname and IP172.29.145.199 App1WPAR

Configure the WPAR Agent on LPAR1

/opt/IBM/WPAR/agent/bin/configure-agent -amhost <LPAR1’s hostname> -passwd<password you chose when configuring wpar server>

Example:# /opt/IBM/WPAR/agent/bin/configure-agent -amhost lpar57p682e_pub -passwd wparman

We now need to setup and configure the second LPAR.

Logon to LPAR2

Switch to ROOT user# su - root

Now install the WPAR Agent on LPAR2:# installp -acXYgd /stage/middleware/AIX/WPM/installp/ppc wparmgt.agent

On LPAR2 edit the /etc/hosts file to add the both WPARs and LPAR1’s IP informationfrom the information you gathered above:

# vi /etc/hosts

Hint: use the same hostname of the server you used above.

6. Remove existing WPARS.

Using the WPAR Manager

If you haven’t already please connect with your VPN client to access your VLP system,This will also work if you use a tunnel through the SSH Gateway. Details on creating atunnel to your VLP lpar are located on the VLP web page.in the “How to” section andselecting the “Connecting to your VLP system – A User Guide”.

You must be able to connect directly to your VLP lpar from your PC or localsystem, if you can login then the following steps should work.

Before you can use the WPAR Manager, JavaScript(TM) must be enabled in your browser.

Start a browser on your client and connect to the WPAR manager using LPAR1’s IPAddress. Open the browser on your system (Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer).

In the browser address bar type:https://<LPAR1 IP ADDRESS>:14443/ibm/console

Example:https://172.29.145.219:14443/ibm/console

This will connect you to the WPAR Manager Console

You may have to add an exception for the web page. Select Add exceptionGet CertificateConfirm Security exception.

Login to the WPAR Manager with your ROOT User ID and Password.

From the Workload Partition Manager Welcome page select from the left side panel -> Resource View -> Managed Systems

On the Managed Systems page click the Discover Button to find your Managed LPARswhere you previously configured the agents.

The LPARs will be found and registered to the Workload Partition Manager,And show status of “Online”

Once the LPARs are Online, select the Workload Partitions on the left side panel, thiswill display all the current WPARs you can manage.

This WPAR was created for you by the VLP, it is not setup for Live ApplicationMobility. We need to remove it and create a new WPAR with NFS mounted filesystemsfor the WPAR.

Select the WPAR listed (you should see one and it should be “Active”) by checking thecheck box next to the WPAR.

Click on the “Actions” button and select “Remove” from the drop down list.

On the Remove Workload Partitions page select “Delete database definitions…” and“Forcestop and removal of workload…” check boxesClick “OK”

The WPARS will show “Deleted”, click on -> Resource View -> Workload PartitionsTo refresh the window and notice the WPARS are gone.

7. Create NFS Filesystem for WPARs

We need to stop and restart portmap and NFS to prepare for creating the NFS filesystemfor the WPARs. Run the commands exactly as show below on LPAR1:

List the NFS daemons to make sure they are running:# lssrc -g nfs

Create a JFS2 filesystem for the WPARs NFS filesystem. At a minimum it needs to be1GB in size, if you plan on installing additional software it may need to be larger.

# crfs -v jfs2 -g rootvg -m /wpars -A yes -a size=1G

Mount the /wpars filesystem# mount /wpars

The filesystem needs to have Read-Write-Execute permissions only for root:# chmod 700 /wpars

Edit the exports file to add all the LPARs and WPARs for NFS mounting.# vi /etc/exports

Add the following stanza with the LPAR and WPAR names from your info above. If thisis not done correctly your WPAR creation in the next steps will fail./wpars –rw, access=<LPAR1: LPAR2: WPAR1>,root=<LPAR1: LPAR2: WPAR1:>

Example:/wpars -rw,access=lpar57p682e_pub:lpar58p682e_pub:App1WPAR,root=lpar57p682e_pub:lpar58p682e_pub:App1WPAR

Save the file.

Refresh the exports table:# exportfs –a

8. Create new WPAR with WPAR manager.

Create a new WPAR

Select from the left side panel -> Resource View -> Workload Partitions.Click on the “New” button to create a new WPAR.

From the Create new workload partition Welcome page click “Next” to proceed to thenext panel.

Select partition type as “System” enter the partition name for WPAR1.Click on the “Browse” button to select the managed system where you want to create theWPAR, here we will use LPAR1.

Select the LPAR1 name from the table and click OK.

Be sure to check the “Enable Checkpoint” button, if you do not, the WPAR cannotbe relocated with Live Application Mobility.

We need to define the filesystems for the WPAR, we will use the /wpars filesystem wecreated previously. Click on the “Configure required filesystems” button.

For the NFS server type in the name of LPAR1 and the remote directory /wpars. Do notselect “use private /usr and /opt” for this example.Click “OK”

It will automatically fill in the required filesystems for the WPAR.Click “Next”

Here are the options, select “Start the workload partition each time…” check box, leavethe default name for the base directory.Click “Next”

Select the “Inherit name resolution…” check box.Click on the “Add” button to define a network interface for the WPAR.

From the info you have above about the WPAR IP address, enter the address for the IPaddress for the WPAR. The network mask is always 255.255.192.0, enter it too.

Please be careful when entering this address, make sure it is exactly the information youreceived on the VLP reservation info page for this WPAR, typing it incorrectly couldimpact other users of the VLP.Click “OK”

The next section is for resource controls, for this example we will use the defaults, butyou can specify other parameters if you are familiar with CPU and Memory resources asit applies to WPARS.Click “Next”

For Security, enter a password for the WPAR and leave all other checkboxes at thedefault settings.

Click “Next”

On the Advance settings, select “Halt WPAR prcesses until…” to facilitate LiveApplication Mobility.Click “Next”

This screen will show the status and results of the WPAR deployment.You should see “Deploy Workload Partition completed successfully.

Go back to the left side panel and select -> Resource Views -> Workload Partitions.

You will see your newly created WPAR listed in the table.Congratulations!, you have created you first WPAR, now we need to start the WPAR.Select the WPAR and click the “Actions” button.

9. Relocate WPAR with WPAR manager.

Go back to the Workload Partitions page -> Resource View -> Workload Partitions.Notice that the WPAR is showing LPAR1 as the current managed system.Again, select the WPAR you wish to migrate (at this point there is only one).Click on the “Actions” button

From the “Actions” drop down select “Relocate”.

On the Relocate Workload Partition page, it shows the name of the WPAR to be relocted,the current managed system where is resides. The relocation method is “Live” since theWPAR is running and the “Destination System” is the other managed system that youpreviously loaded the WPAR agent – LPAR2.Clock “OK”

The Task Details page will show the status and results of the relocation.You should see the “Relocate Workload Partition completed successfully.

Go back to the left side panel and select -> Resource Views -> Workload Partitions.You will now see that the “Managed system” name has changed from LPAR1 to LPAR2.You have successfully relocated the WPAR from one system to another.

The WPARs created here are using shared /usr and /opt, you can create a private /usr and /opt for each WPAR but the /wpar filesystem will need to be increased asappropriate.
