DRAM 205 – Theatre in the Age of Film and Television

    Assignment – ICE Assignment

    Overview:

    •  There are three ICE Assignments in this course. For each, you will be given a choice

of concepts from our Dram205 lectures to discuss.

    •  Choose a concept and connect it to some aspect of your prior learning. Discuss your

connection using the ICE Method. Make sure you look for a connection

    •  This ‘aspect of prior learning’ could be a concept/example/idea/topic/theory fromanother Dram205 lecture, from another course, from something you’ve encountered

elsewhere, or from a relevant personal experience.

    •  You are looking for something that will help you gain new insight into the lecture

concept (or something that the lecture concept will help you see in a new and different

    way).

    Instructions:

    •

Introduce and explain your connection by completing the following:

    Part 1 - Intro

In ONE SENTENCE, tell me what you are connecting.

    Part 2 - Ideas

Give me a very brief definition of

    •  the course concept that you using in the discussion.

    •  The new concept that you are connecting to in the discussion.

    (150 words approx)

    Part 3 - Connections

Discuss your connection. Explain the specific links that make up the

connection. This is the analysis section of the assignment, and your

analysis should be specific, detailed, and concise.

    (300 words +/- 10%)

    Part 4 - Extensions

What new insight have you realized from making this connection? Your

insight should extend  directly out of your connection

    (125 words approx)

    Learning Outcomes:

As a result of completing this assignment…

    •  …the student will develop and eventually demonstrate the skill of recognizing andselecting effective connections. Effective connections are those that lead to new

    learning.

    •

…the student will develop the skill of writing concise, direct, and efficient arguments.

    •  …the student will come to understand the value of making connections not only

towards completing assignments, but as a central part of effective learning.

    •  …the student will enhance his/her knowledge of a selection of concepts from

Dram205, and through the process of completing the assignment, will integrate those

concepts more fully into his/her own cognitive context.

    •  …with the aid of publically accessible examples of graded assignments, the student

will develop the ability to self-assess the quality of his/her own work and thinking.

The intent is to encourage personal ownership over learning and academic

development. (Note: we will use the ICE approach to assessment to enable this self-assessment).

    OTHER INSTRUCTIONS:

    Word Count:

    •  The word count targets in this assignment are there to determine the depth and quality ofthinking. They are not optional.

    •  (+/- 10%) means that you are required to meet the word limit within 10% of theassigned total. For example, if the word count target is 300 words, you must be within30 words either way of that total (since 30 words is 10% of 300).

    •  You can borrow words from one section in favour of the other; however, the total word

count of sections 2-4, combined together, cannot exceed 575 words.

    Submission & Formatting:

    •  Since I am asking you to compare course concepts to your own prior learning, you mayuse first person pronouns. However, please remember that these are still formal writing

assignments. I expect a concisely written discussion with appropriate grammar and

correct spelling.•   Number each section in your assignment according to the assignment sheet. Include the

word count in each section heading.

    •  Single spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman font.

    •  Assignments will be uploaded to Moodle.

    •  We will only accept doc, docx, or rtf file formats

    •  Filename must contain your last name and the number of the ICE assignment. (For

example, if I were submitting my third assignment, my filename would be:

    “RenykICE3.docx”).

    Late Policy:

ICE Assignments are eligible for extensions. You can have a one week extension, upon

request. Email me directly with “Dram205 Extension” in the subject line to tell me that

    you are taking the extension.
