Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

Institute of Civil engineers (ICE) is a professional body, which came into existence more

than two centuries ago. Being the brainchild of a few young idealistic engineers, the

branches of this body are vastly spread all over the world with its roots embedded in the

heart of the United Kingdom. Consisting of an impressively good lot of members

(approximately 80,000), ICE focuses on fostering the innovation of civil engineers by

providing them a platform to show case their unique abilities. It also strives to spread more

knowledge by making research resources more easily accessible to its members.

ICE-NUCES Student Chapter

Our Motto: “To foster and promote the art of and science of civil engineering”

ICE-NUCES is a student chapter of the ICE based in National University of Computer and

Emerging Sciences Lahore. It is one of the links of chain of student chapters of ICE in civil

engineering universities around the world. Founded on December 23, 2013; ICE NUCES

is playing a significant role in promoting and fostering the knowledge of civil engineering

throughout Pakistan by organizing advantageous activities like seminars, workshops,

events and motivational programs all related to civil engineering. ICE-NUCES yet remains

a pipeline between the educational hubs as well as the industry. ICE-NUCES is basically

serving to make sure that students of civil engineering at NUCES remain in touch with

innovation and practical engineering demands at the same time. In recent past ICE-

NUCES have successfully arranged talks by distinguished foreign and Pakistani

engineers, academic resources for students, project exhibition, workshops, gatherings of

ICE community in Pakistan, and other technical and sub technical events. ICE-NUCES is

notably progressing on all fronts and pulling its student members up to secure promising

careers in today’s industry. We aim to continue adding more stand out projects to reinforce

the positive impact of civil engineering on the society.

Messages

From the Head of Civil Department:

It is my pleasure to write a message at annual report of

ICE-NUCES student chapter. ICE-NUCES is the oldest

student chapter in Pakistan as ICE is the oldest

engineering body in the world. ICENUCES has worked

professionally not only in extracurricular activities but also

in conducting technical workshops. These workshops not

only focused on enhancing the understanding of civil

engineering software but also involved in hands-on

designed competitions. The Wooden Bridge Design

Competition is one of such events that ICE-NUCES is

really proud of. This event is popular all over the country where students come up

with new ideas.

ICE-NUCES fully understands the importance of engineers and engineering

decisions on the society. Therefore, it is always on the forefront in major

engineering events which influence the society. One of such examples is fund-

raising for Bhasha dam where ICE-NUCES members did exemplary work. I believe

that ICE-NUCES student chapter will inspire other student chapters to play an

exemplary role in the days to come.

From Advisor ICE-NUCES:

ICE; FAST-NUCES chapter has been delivering

exceptional extra-curricular activities in FAST since 2012.

The chapter has provided a plat form for students to work

as a team and overcome various challenges while

executing the tasks assigned. We, at ICE, aim to bring

about quality in your academic profile by providing you with

opportunities to enhance your hidden talents and skills.

We, at the Civil Engineering Department, have an

International Student Chapter under the name Institution of

Primavera P6 Workshop:

Date: 25th June, 2018 – 25th July, 2018

A month long workshop was conducted, here at FAST NU whereby the interested

members of ICE NUCES were introduced with “Primavera P-6” – An enterprise project

portfolio management software. Conducted under Mr. Nasir Butt’s shadow of guidance,

the workshop turned out be a success. In total, the workshop was thirty hours long with as

3-4 hour seminars were held three days a week within the span of a month.

Website Design

Date: July-August 2018

The members of ICE NUCES were keen on taking their society live as works had started

to create an official “ICE NUCES website”. The purposes of creating a website included

forming a virtual book bank and for the registrations and publicities of the events

conducted by this very society. For the creation of this website, Mr. Farooq Ahmad, from

FAST NU Lahore’s Computer Sciences (CS) department stepped in. He, alongside a

handful of his students, worked on this project effectively. The project turned out to be a

win-win situation for both ICE NUCES and the CS students as the former got themselves a

website while the latter gained certified work experience. The book bank operated in two

main ways. The first one was giving out actual physical books to those who requested for

it. For this purpose, vast collection of books, donated by students and faculty members,

were put on a display on the website and the people who required any particular book had

the option of emailing us and collecting the book from our side. Next was the creation of

an online database of PDF books of all civil engineering. Again, the wishers of one of

these books had the option of emailing us in order to gain access. Unfortunately, the lack

of funding not only hindered with the idea of online book bank but it also meant not being

able to pay for the website’s domain (a fee which has to be paid in order to keep the

website live). Consequently, the website was taken down therefore it ceases to exist. The

upside to all this, however, is that ICE NUCES has been promised a page at FAST NU’s

official website, where the registration and publicity related activities will take place.

Seminar by Professor Sekeimoto Date: 4th September, 2018 A purely academic type of event, this particular event was held at Syed Rafaqat Ali

Auditorium. A three-person panel from the University of Tokyo, Japan, was invited and

requested to grace the audience with information regarding their works both in field and in

research labs. Mr. Sekeimoto, a professor and researcher at the above mentioned

university, briefed the audience about his GIS (geographic information system) based

research on Traffic Management of Tokyo city. Though his lecture was brief, it was very

beneficial for the ones looking to pursue careers in the said department of engineering.

Next came Mr. Sano, a student from University of Tokyo, who shared his research

regarding the solid waste management of Lahore city. Finally, Miss Ansa, an alumna of

UET and FAST NUCES Lahore pursuing higher education in Tokyo, talked about the

procedures, prerequisites and requirements for bagging admissions at highly ranked

universities around the globe (especially in Japan). She spoke in the light of her own

extraordinary academic journey. The seminar proved to be very informative indeed.

Orientation 2018

Date: 20th September, 2018

ICE NUCES’ orientation for the fresh was held on the eve of 20th September, 2018. The

orientation began with extension of a warm welcome to the fresh young faces. A brief

introduction of ICE NUCES student chapter was what followed in order to make the new

students familiar with what this society was and what it strives for. Since this time around,

one mega function was held for the orientation of all the societies; ICE NUCES well

utilized the allocated ten minutes: during which the president of the society gave a brief

speech introduction of the Civil Engineering faculty was done and a motivational video was

played in order to motivate the freshmen to join the society.

ICE Bicentennial Celebrations Date: 20th November, 2018 As the name suggests, this event was a celebration for the 200th anniversary of Institution of Civil Engineers. The motto of this event was to bring all the student chapters of ICE, spread throughout Pakistan, together around a single round table. Since, the ICE student chapters of Pakistan were not integrated in any way; ICE NUCES took the liberty of creating a new post in the executive body 2018-19 namely “manager external relations”. The main purpose behind this move was to fill the communication gap between all the student chapters. This effort by ICE NUCES bore fruit when the student chapter was finally able to host ICE Bicentennial Celebrations. At this very auspicious event, four significant personalities were invited to grace the gathering with their presence and their words. The guests were as follows: 1) Dr. Sohail Aftab: (Member Governing Body, Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) Since Dr. Aftab is in the governing body of PEC, his talk mostly revolved around the new policies of PEC. He also guided the graduating batch about the necessary actions to take in order to get PEC accreditation and supervisory certification. He also explained the benefits the institutions and their graduates enjoy if the institutions are affiliated with Washington Accord.

2) Dr. Sohail Kibria: (Vice president NESPAK) Dr. Kibria’s point of focus was that ‘what qualities the fresh civil engineering graduates must possess in order to meet the demands of employers’. Speaking in the light of modern corporate culture, he explained what corporations and entrepreneurs are looking for when hiring fresh graduates. INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS NUCES STUDENT CHAPTER YEAR 2018-19 12 3) Dr. Mubashir Aziz Dr. Mubashir Aziz, experienced in “engineering education, research, program assessment and accreditation,” is an associate professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Lahore. His presentation in the seminar revolved around ‘promoting creativity and innovation in engineering education.’ 4) Engineer Sarfraz Ahmad: (Country Representative ICE in Pakistan) Mr. Sarfraz Ahmad, head of ICE in Pakistan and a distinguished professional, was the chief guest at the ceremony. Since he is one of the pioneers of ICE Pakistan, he talked about his venture of bringing ICE to Pakistan and how it has contributed towards engineering in Pakistan. He also talked about his professional life and the lessons young generation entering their professional lives could extract from his example.

After all this, cake cutting was done to symbolically celebrate 200th birthday of ICE.

Followed by a meeting between the executive bodies of all seven ICE Student Chapters

Page 14: ICE Student Chapter NUCES Annual Report 2018 - 2019€¦ · Team Coordinator AnsarUsama Treasurer Rehman Historian . 6 Annual Report – NUCES Institution of Civil Engineers is a

was held. The meeting proved to be of paramount importance as an agreement was

reached that all the student chapters would come together at least once annually. The fact

that in March of 2019, ICE student chapter UET Taxila hosted the first annual get together

shows how this mega event could be deemed a success.

Seminar: Evolution of Dam Design and Safety

Date: 18th April, 2019

Taking place on the afternoon of 18th April, dam safety seminar was conducted keeping in

view the ongoing construction of two mega dams in Pakistan. The chief guest and speaker

at this seminar was Engineer Rashid Ahmad (a graduate of the University of California

Davis). Since Mr. Ahmad’s field of expertise revolves around the seismic safety of dams,

radial gates evolution and other articles related to dam works, he talked about particular

events pave way for the construction of more sophisticated dams. He also talked about the

construction of Diamer Bhasha Dam. Around forty-five people from the industry came to

FAST NU for the sole purpose of attending this seminar, so it won’t be wrong to say that

this was a professional gathering.

ICEAGE

Date: 30th April, 2019

ICEAGE is the crown jewel of all the activities which take place at FAST NU. Like every

year, ICEAGE again was a single day event. In total, this one mega event had nine

different modules. All the modulus were swiftly conducted, thus the event was a success.

The following were the nine modulus:

1) First Aid Training

Since civil engineers sometimes have to work in

hazardous conditions, a first aid training workshop was

conducted where the provision of basic medical aid in the

occurrence of some accident was the subject of

conversation. The workshop was conducted by trainers

from Edhi Foundation.

2) Levelling and Centering

This module was more like a race, where the victorious

participant emerged out as the one who was able to properly

center and level (setup properly) a theodolite in the least amount

of time.

3) AutoCAD Competition

Consisting of two rounds (knock out and final round),

the competitors (in the first round) were given the task

of an orthographic drawing. The finalists of the second

round were told to make 3-D drawings.

England & Wales (no 210252) and Scotland (SC038629)

4) Mock Interviews

Focused solely on the final year students, the purpose of this module was to simulate the

kind of interviews fresh graduates would have to sit when they’ve applied for some

particular job. This module wasn’t conducted as the minimum number of participants was

not met.

5) Sketching Competition

The theme of this module was “sustainability”. The competition took place at drawing labs,

where the participants made impressive sketches which delivered some message

regarding the importance of sustainability.

6) Typing Competition

Again a race, this module was to see which one the participants could type the given

amount of content in minimum time. This module wasn’t conducted as the minimum

number of participants was not met.

7) Bridge Design Competition

The participants of this very module were

supposed to design bridges with playing cards

and scotch tape. The amount of time and

material were limited and the participants had

to keep in mind the weight and aesthetics of the

bridge. This competition marked the revamping

of our typical wooden bridge design

competition.

8) ICE – Futsal Cup

ICE Futsal Cup was a sport activity exclusive for

civil engineers and was organized in association

with Fast Sports Society. This was a Futsal

tournament where the team who scored the

most amount of goals won. This event was done

to encourage physical activity among civil

engineers.

9) Capture Your Story

A photography competition topped up with the art of storytelling to promote the spirit of

creativity amongst civil engineers, the specifications of this module included roaming

around the ICEAGE event and capturing images. Each participant was allowed to present

a maximum of three images along with a story narrated in front of jury.

Closing Ceremony:

Once all the above-mentioned modules were successfully conducted, a closing ceremony

was held in the eve. This ceremony included handing out the prizes to the winners of their

respective modules. The ceremony wrapped on a very euphoric note as FAST Music

Society’s performance cheered up the crowd.

Events in the Pipeline

Student Motivational Program

In the past, the target audience for this event was the student body of high school. The

activities were conducted included the tour of FAST NU, seminars focused on motivating

young minds towards aspiring future. Last year, however, the design for this event was

changed. ICE NUCES had planned out to target 18 batch as now SMP would serve as an

alternate to “Welcome Week”. The blueprints of the event suggested that a seminar would

be held where significant personal would be invited. The session would be open for all

university students. At this session, three of the following people would speak:

1) A Motivational Speaker

2) Some celebrity

3) A person keen on progressing and raising the bar of his/her life (e.g. some

entrepreneur)

The purpose of this event was to revive students’ faith in optimism and let them know how

mishaps in life are hurdles rather than barriers.

Arduous efforts were made by ICE team to engage significant people from above

mentioned spheres in SMP. This event, however, was not conducted after all the efforts,

since the management of the university was changed which paused all student activates

at university for managerial reasons.

Suggestion for Sustainable on Campus Publicity:

This idea was extended to the director of FAST NU via a formal application by the

president of ICE NUCES executive body (2018-19). The proposition put forward was to

adopt a more sustainable and equitable way of on campus advertisement. The installation

of four digital screens at two significant spots on the university’s main highway was

suggested. This recommendation was made as the printed advertisement for events at the

university are a burden to various events’ budget and also it causes a lot of solid waste.

This waste leads to greater land pollution at the university, rendering the university’s

Page 22: ICE Student Chapter NUCES Annual Report 2018 - 2019€¦ · Team Coordinator AnsarUsama Treasurer Rehman Historian . 6 Annual Report – NUCES Institution of Civil Engineers is a

landscape unattractive. The suggestion was readily accepted yet it awaits to be

implemented.

Mock Evacuation Drill

This particular event is a part of our proud legacy as it took place in the academic year

2017-18. This year, ICE NUCES had planned out to conduct this event yet again. The

purpose of this event was to make the campus a safer place in case of an unfortunate

event. This event is characterized by an awareness drive: knowledge of emergency

equipment in place, its safe use and human response in an emergency; and a mock

evacuation drill.

Before the event, a research survey was done in the university in order to check if such an

activity was actually need or not. The results made it vividly clear how little the general

public was aware about what were the necessary steps to take during a turbulent situation.

The event, however, was not conducted due to time constraints as ICEAGE was an

upcoming event which required more extensive preparations. Consequently, the team

decided to only publish the survey within university as an awareness tool and leave the

remaining event to be organized in future.

When it came to publishing the survey as a part of awareness drive, ICE NUCES team

realized that there was no actual platform in the university. Hence the idea of creating ICE

NUCES’ own magazine hatched in the minds of the team members and this plan is for the

following batches to fulfill.

Protoclash

The ICEAGE conducted in the academic year of 2017-18 included this very module. In this

module the participants from various universities presented their researches, in form of

either prototypes or poster presentations.

The very essence of this event is to bridge the gap between academia and industry. It

focuses on the creative ideas of students to be adopted by industry and professionals.

From previous experience and detailed discussions with faculty members; ICE NUCES

thought of changing the pattern of this event to get maximum benefits. This module wasn’t

conducted due to time constraints, but instead a plan was made to make this a full fledge

event in its own rights which rests with ICE NUCES team to be pursued in future
