ICE NUCES Orientation 2016:

This tenure began with an official orientation on 17th of October 2016, in which

Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) NUCES Student Chapter gave a warm welcome to all

new students to the University and the Student Chapter itself. Orientation began with a

brief introduction to all about the back ground and ambitions of ICE followed by the

objectives of the program and their main task. A survey was carried about what

students know about civil engineering and how importantly does it serve the sector of

civil engineering. Students were introduced to the newest executive council and

information about how students could benefit from them. Advisor of society Ms. Sarah

Asif presented a speech to encourage students to join ICE’s program for promoting its

aims and spreading it even further. She also talked about the importance of the

societies like ICE-NUCES to polish the skills students by providing a platform with

various knowledge and resources to develop them into better engineers. Later on, a

questionnaire was conducted with awarding of presents to every individual who

responded in the best way to their respective questions. This orientation acted as a

pioneer, established by ICE-NUCES that ensured the participation of students in this

LePark’S Seminar on Parking Awareness 2017:

On 25th January 2017, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) NUCES Student Chapter

hosted a seminar on “Parking Problems and Their Effects on Traffic Congestion” in

Lahore. Executive individuals from Lahore Parking Company Limited (LPCL) were

welcomed to share their awareness, ideas and plans for their new program with the

students as well as the staff. The guests were greeted with much hostility and showed

their way to the Civil Department where Head of Department Dr. Shahid Ali brief them

about the university and the Civil Engineering Program. Team ICE conducted the

seminar in drawing hall. LePark's officials set up themselves in a very professional

manner with fliers and standees all the way to the stage where ICE executive members

helped them. Main guest speakers included General Manager Operations LPCL Mr.

Rehan Waheed and Manager Operations Miss Asna Ahmad.

Mr. Rehan Waheed give introduction of Lahore Parking Company and aware us about

their new programs and ways to minimize parking problems and secure a wide freeway

for traffic movement. He highlighted the main framework of their new parking system i.e.

mechanical rotatory system and the laws introduced that are completely fair to both the

imposers and the receivers. Later the Manager Operations LPCL Miss Asna Ahmad

shared her view of the uprising problems of parking and how they could be solved. She

also mentioned the construction of new plazas to accommodate large amount of

vehicles at a time. Students also took part very enthusiastically as they themselves face

parking problems every time on their way to the institute.

The seminar was followed by a brief question answer session which was very well

maintained by the LePark's officials. Our Head of Department and Director FAST NU

blessed us with their presence and involvement in the program. Gifts were also given to

Workshop on Rocscience Slide Software 2017:

ICE NUCES Student Chapter successfully arranged a

workshop on a civil engineering software “Slide” in FAST NU. It

is a soil stability software often used in field. All types of soil

and rock slopes, embankments, earth dams, and retaining

walls can be analyzed. State of the art CAD capabilities allow

you to create and edit complex models very easily. It is the only

slope stability software with built-in finite element groundwater

seepage analysis for steady-state or transient conditions. It was

arranged on 3rd February 2017 i.e. Friday in Civil Engineering

Department.

Our very own, very talented Engr. Nabeel Liaqat (a graduate of

FAST NUCES) conducted a one-day workshop on this

software. The main audience was targeted to be the senior

batches since this software has vast applications in fields of

Dams, Embankments, Excavation, Ground water, Mining,

Retaining walls and Slope stability analysis. The instructor gave

extensive knowledge of the software in which he did the slope

stability analysis of poorly drained, cohesive soils in different

layers. Students learnt and enjoyed as well and this workshop

played a very important and effective role for all Geotechnical

and Civil Engineers to be.

With everything, ICE standards grow better and better and its

plans get broader and broader. This tenure was one in which

ICE NUCES student chapter blasted through the roof and set

fire throughout the institute by announcing a new event “ICE

DAY”. ICE Day composed mostly of the things of their normal

routine events but the name and enthusiasm of the event was

so enormous that our university came across the biggest one-

day event of its time.

ICE DAY 17’:

This time ICE NUCES plans to dream big and better. ICE organized its annual event of

the season on 8th February 2017. Team ICE named this annual event “ICE DAY” to

show solidity as one and to bring all civil engineers closer. Preparations started weeks earlier, posters were printed and pasted on almost every tree, every gate, and every notice board on the walls of university. The event was well organized and immensely competitive. It mainly consists of two parts:

1. National Wooden Bridge Design Competition 2. Student Motivational Program

National Wooden Bridge Design Competition:

Team ICE welcomed students from different universities to Fast NUCES on ICE

DAY. About more than 60 teams participated in this annual Wooden Bridge Design

Competition which were accommodated inside the university. Participants were given

two hours to complete their bridges with limited resources. New records of participants

were set which include students from UET Narowal, UOL, COMSATS, UMT etc. While

the participation of students within the university was overwhelming as well. After

finishing the bridge it was tested in the presence of judges.

All the teams compete very hard and made new innovations. The winner of this

competition was from UET Narowal and runner up was from University of Lahore (UOL).

They received their prizes and shields while every participant of the competition was

Ending Message:

President Mr. Ammad and the team including all the executive council members and the

volunteers, showed remarkable skill and composure concerning all that ICE Student

Chapter had to go through around this year. All the events that took place and the

scenarios that came forth, helped groom all ICE’s members and encouraged new

students of this field to become a member and learn through the processes that follow.

Many volunteers perfected themselves to suit the lower executive body and the

executives are now all expertise in their respective departments. I, as a historian for ICE

NUCES student chapter, feel much obliged to carry my work to wherever I travel and

spread my knowledge i.e. whatever I learnt in all this time from ICE. ICE helped me to

recognize my duty to help all those who seek knowledge about civil engineering and

guide them to join ICE as it is a landmark of knowledge and a treasure of resources for

all Civil Engineer’s best interest.
