ALL-STAR FORMAT TWEAKEDThe National Hockey League announced a

major tweak to its annual All-Star Weekend on Nov. 10. Instead of the standard conference versus conference format the league had been using, two captains will be chosen to pick the two squads.

Fans will still have a say in the selection process, as they will choose a starting team of three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender, regardless of conference. Those six players will be joined by 36 all-stars and 12 rookies selected by the league’s hockey operations department. The 54 players will then vote on who will be the two captains.

On Jan. 28, the captains will choose their teams, with the two squads squaring off in the skills competition on Jan. 29 and the All-Star Game on Jan. 30. Each captain must choose a minimum of three goaltenders, six defensemen and 13 forwards. The rookies will only participate in the skills competition.

RED-HOT BLUES LOSE SCORING LEADERQuietly, the St. Louis Blues have flown

under the radar as one of the NHL’s early-season success stories, sitting in first place in the Central Division with a 9-2-2 record as of Nov. 11. If the Blues are going to maintain their division lead, they are going to have to do so without the services of team scoring leader T.J. Oshie.

Oshie suffered a broken left ankle during a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 10 following a collision with Samuel Pahlsson and is out indefinitely. He was the Blues leading scorer through the first 13 games of the season with 10 points (1G-9A).

SELANNE STAYS STRONGAnaheim Ducks forward Teemu Selanne,

who recently played in his 1,200 career game against the Penguins on Nov. 5, continues to defy the aging process. At the age of 40, and amidst what he has said will be his final NHL season, Selanne continues to rank among one of the best forwards in the game.

Nicknamed the ‘Finish Flash’ because of his Finland roots and sensational scoring abilities, Selanne found himself occupying the No. 4 spot in the NHL scoring race as of Nov. 11 with 18 points (7G-11A) through 17 contests. With 1,278 career points (613G-665A), he sits just 22 shy of becoming the 32nd player in league history to hit 1,300.

Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world.Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in

retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins.

Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal.

Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less.

Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s

new multi-purpose entertainment venue.Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-

owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits.

Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org.

DAVIDDAVIDDAVID MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSEPittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the

Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center.Morehouse had served as team president since 2007,

overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs.

Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine.

As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic.

Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006.

His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the

playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09.

One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization.

Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators.

Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office.

The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group.

Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-

related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars.

Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo.

A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments.

He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009,

Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season.

Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim.

Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh.

He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw

the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent.

Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003.

Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993.

Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.

Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman

for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen.Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-

10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green.

Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes.

Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization.Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury

into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder.Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending

coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade.

Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average.

Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more.

It replaces the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League.

“CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.”

CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania.

The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification.

Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney.

McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010.

In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years.

A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others.

The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

FSN 1Vancouver is a different kind of Canadian hockey city. I discovered this three years

ago on my first trip to the world’s most recent Olympic town. The Penguins played at Vancouver on Dec. 8, 2007, a game that for them marked the wrap of a three-game trek through Western Canada.

This was my first full season on the Penguins beat, and this trip through Western Canada was the one to which I most looked forward — not because I was all that interested in the cities’ sights and sounds, but because I fondly recalled staying up late as a child to watch on KBL when the Penguins played at Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. Late-night Penguins hockey left me weary the next morning back in those days, but the tradeoff of sleeping through breakfast was worth it.

My first road trip through Western Canada was also Sidney Crosby’s first NHL visit to his native country’s western cities. This was a big deal, and that was apparent from the start, which occurred at Edmonton.

That first year on the beat I discovered that much of what I’d heard about covering an NHL team wasn’t completely true. Some examples: not all New York City cab drivers are speed racers; some southern cities (Tampa Bay) really dig the sport; and at least one Canadian arena (Air Canada Center) lacked atmosphere.

However, one thing I’d heard was spot-on: Edmonton in December is colder than anything I could have imagined.

The night before the Penguins played the Oilers, I asked the front-desk worker at my hotel for advice on finding dinner. She informed of a great restaurant “about 25 minutes away… walking.” I laughed. She asked why I was laughing. I told her that the temperature was minus-5 degrees. “Oh, well, that’s not very cold for us,” she said. I sighed and headed for my room, but not before asking her to have extra blankets delivered.

The media contingent that followed Crosby certainly outnumbered the two Pittsburgh newspaper reporters that cover the Penguins. To draw a comparison, I’d say that Crosby’s

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games.

The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie.

After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems.

The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals.

Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship.

Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

arrival in Western Canada was met with media coverage usually reserved for a conference final series. I’m pretty sure I met all of the TSN on-screen talent.

So busy was Crosby’s media schedule that I didn’t ask him a question until the last day of the trip. “Hi, Rob Rossi with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,” I said while extending my hand for a shake. “I was wondering if you had a minute or two?” He smiled, shook my hand and said, “Oh, yeah, I’ve heard about you.”

The way Crosby was greeted by fans in each city was telling.

In Edmonton he was cheered during warm-ups then throughout the game. There was a feeling that his playing there was a rite of passage for any great player, given all the great ones who skated in Edmonton during the 1980s.

The scene in Calgary was something decidedly different. Crosby stepped onto the ice for the warm-up skate and was met with applause, but once the game started he was booed as though he was any other player. I had been tipped off that this would be the reaction by a fan who told me that Calgary fans are Calgary fans, end of story. I gained a measure of respect for Calgary fans that day.

The Vancouver visit was surreal, probably because the Penguins, Crosby and the gang of merry media men and women who followed him were flat worn out by this point. Every angle had been covered, and the buzz was unique. If Edmonton’s fans had treated Crosby like royalty and Calgary’s fans had viewed him as just another guy on an enemy team, the fans in Vancouver appeared to me just happy to have him around.

I didn’t fully get that dynamic until I spent a travel-day Sunday walking around Vancouver — this modern, urban city with a backdrop of forest greens, snowcapped mountains and blue skies. Breathtaking doesn’t do the city justice. Were I to live there perhaps I, too, would have thought of Crosby as just some other wonder at which to look.

Despite the absence of some of the team’s top penalty-killers, the Penguins still found themselves near the front of the pack when it comes to surviving short-handed in the early part of the season.

Through the first week of November, the Penguins managed to kill off 87.5 percent of their penalties, which put them in sixth place in the National Hockey League in PK percentage.

“The PK sets the battle level for your team,” Matt Cooke said. “When you’re out there and working very hard, you’re making sure that you’re forcing opponents into situations that they don’t like or an uncomfortable place on the ice — as opposed to giving them time and space to make a play.”

On the road, the Penguins penalty kill ranked third in the NHL, with an impressive 92.3 percent success rate. That the Penguins have found this success without two of their best penalty killers — Jordan Staal has yet to play this year and Brooks Orpik missed six games due to injury — is even more impressive.

“We haven’t done anything differently except, of course, miss [Staal],” Craig Adams said. “As far as our system and what we’re trying to do out there, that hasn’t changed. Obviously, we’ve been without him, but we won’t change anything when he comes back. We’ll just have another good penalty killer.”

Cooke agreed and said the only thing different is that other players are getting more of an opportunity to step up on the PK.

“Without [Staal], we’ve all had to step up and play more and do some different things that we might not be used to,” Cooke said. “So we’re seeing [Sidney] Crosby, [Chris] Kunitz and [Mike] Rupp getting the opportunity to kill more because of it.”

The Penguins penalty kill hasn’t only been a strong point keeping the puck out of the Pittsburgh net. They’ve also been a threat to put the puck into the opposing team’s goal.

same penalty against Tampa Bay on Oct. 27. But they both said they don’t go out there looking for a shorthanded chance.

“There are some teams that it looks like they are really looking for shorthanded chances, but we have to take them as they come,” Adams said. “When you don’t force it and you just take them when the bounces are there it’s probably a little better for the PK.”

The three goals put the Penguins in a tie for second place in the NHL for total shorthanded goals as of Nov. 10. But since all three came on the road, the Penguins lead the league in road shorthanded goals.

“I think that we realize and understand that if there’s a forward playing defense, we can utilize

that and try to create offense out of it,” Cooke said. “You’re taking an educated risk. If something’s there, then go ahead and try to score a goal. But don’t put the team at risk by taking the chance offensively.”

One way to become educated about that risk is to talk to the other three [or sometimes two] penalty killers on the ice.

“I think communication is huge,” Cooke said.“There are certain situations where we just know what we’re doing and we don’t even

really need to communicate it,” Adams said. “But there are certain times when a little communication will go a long way.”

“Communication is also important off the ice, making sure we’re all on the same page and knowing and understanding what everyone is trying to accomplish,” Cooke said.

But, no matter how good a penalty killing unit is, the opponent’s power play will still get some shots through to the net. That’s when the goaltender needs to step up, and Adams said that is one of the main reasons for the Penguins’ PK success: “Probably a lot of it is our goaltending, I think our goalies have been really good on the PK and that usually makes the difference in killing one off or not.”

VIDEO CAMERASUse of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.

WHEELCHAIRSA limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. This was the night Pittsburghers had been waiting for since four months earlier when the Penguins made Laval Voisins (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) superstar Mario Lemieux the No. 1-overall selection of the 1984 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

The 18-year-old French-Canadian center was expected to resurrect a moribund franchise that went 16-58-6 the previous season and was on the brink of moving out of Pittsburgh.

But hope sprung eternal once Penguins general manager Eddie Johnston announced at the Montreal Forum on June 9, 1984 that Pittsburgh was choosing Lemieux, which in French translated to ‘The Best.’

Lemieux made quite the early impression his first two games, burying his first shot on his first shift and later adding an assist in his NHL debut against the Boston Bruins. He followed that up with a helper in his second game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Finally, after two road games, the wait was over the ‘Lemieux Debut’ as it was dubbed, finally hit the Civic Arena.

In a foreshadowing of what would become a Hall of Fame career, Lemieux didn’t disappoint the home faithful, lifting the crowd from its seats just 18 seconds into the game when he set up Doug Shedden’s power-play goal to give the Penguins a 1-0 advantage.

Lemieux didn’t stop there, using his hands in a different way 2:14 minutes later.Unhappy with the stick work of

Vancouver’s Gary Lupul, Lemieux, who stood 6-foot-4, quickly dropped the gloves and pummeled the 5-foot-9, 175-pound Lupul in a lopsided bout. In fact, Lemieux was dropping such powerful haymakers on Lupul that Canucks netminder John Garrett felt the need to join the fracas, earning himself a game misconduct.

Lemieux’s fight further ignited the crowd of 15,741, which at that point was the largest opening weeknight crowd in team history.

The Penguins fed off the energy Lemieux’s quick assist and ensuing fight generated to jump out to a commanding 4-1 lead by the midway point of the third period, before withstanding a late Vancouver rally to squeeze out the 4-3 victory.

Rookie Warren Young led the way offensively with a pair of goals and an assist, while Lemieux, defenseman Doug Bodger and forward Roger Belanger — the team’s three first-round picks — all recorded assists in their home debuts.

ROLEXCammi Granato’s historic induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame turned into the

celebration of a career and the confirmation of a way of life.That’s what hockey always

was for the Granatos of Downers Grove, Ill.

That’s what hockey remains, and probably always will be for the Granato siblings.

“It was a great time to reflect,” brother Tony Granato, an assistant coach with the Penguins, said of the ceremony on Nov. 8 in Toronto that featured sister Cammi and Canada’s Angela James as the first two players inducted into the Hall’s women’s category.

“That’s kind of the way everybody looked at it, ‘Wow,

look what my sister’s been able to accomplish in the game.’ You didn’t think something like that was ever, ever possible.

“We were all there, all my brothers and sisters, my parents, all my kids, all the nieces and nephews. We had a pretty special celebration of, not just what she did at the Olympics. It was more going back to the old days when we were little kids.”

Those were days when hockey was seemingly all that mattered to the Granato kids. “We were lucky as kids,” Tony said. “I’m the oldest of six. Our passion and our love for

the sport of hockey was the one common thing that we had when we were kids and we still have now. It’s always been part of our lives. It’s always been something we can relate to. I think it’s been really a bond in our family.

“I think we have a real close family. It’s not just because of hockey, because our parents did a great job that way. But certainly having something in common as significant as the sport of hockey and understanding each other and where we were in our lives was pretty important as a family.”

It still is.Tony played for Wisconsin and for 13 seasons in the NHL for the New York Rangers, Los

Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.Donnie played for Wisconsin, coached for 15 years and currently scouts for the

Vancouver Canucks.

Robbie played for Wisconsin and presently coaches three youth teams, “so he’s still at the rink every day,” Tony said.

Cammi played for Providence College and for Concordia University in Montreal before leading Team USA to the first women’s hockey gold medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

In a manner of speaking, their gravitation to the game was almost predestined.

Parents Don and Natalie were both hockey fans from way back.

“Their first date was a Blackhawks game,” Tony said. “That was the Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita era. In Chicago it was big at that time as a spectator sport. It was a big sport to play. It was something we were introduced to at a young age and just fell in love with.

“We were fortunate enough that our parents allowed us to play in youth leagues. They’d freeze the backyard for us and let us play in the basement. Wherever it was, we played hockey, basically from the time we woke up until the time we went to bed. We couldn’t wait to get out of school so we could run home and get the game going in the basement, in the backyard, wherever it was.”

For the Granatos, hockey is a generation-to-generation obsession.“I have nieces and nephews that are playing all

over the place,” Tony said. “I have two sons playing right now, one playing club hockey at Arizona State and one playing junior hockey in Alaska. My dad still plays Friday night duffer hockey.

“Everybody’s still in love with hockey in one way, shape or form.”

Tony currently expresses his while pursuing a Stanley Cup with the Penguins, the same thing Donnie is doing with the Canucks.

Cammi did so while becoming a trailblazer and, as it turns out, an immortal of the sport.

But what if they’d never made it out of Downers Grove?

“We’d be playing hockey,” Tony said. “We’d probably still be going at each other in the basement games.

“It’s just something we love to do and be a part of.”

FANS REACT AS PENGUINS SCORE AGAINST HUNGER

Penguins’ fans reached into

their wallets and shopping carts

with overwhelming generosity

for the team’s 19th annual Score

Against Hunger food drive on

Wednesday, November 10.

A total of 1,515 pounds of food

and $2,267 in cash donations

were collected at the game for the

benefit of the Greater Pittsburgh

Community Food Bank.

Penguins’ fans were encouraged

to bring non-perishable food items to

the game or to make a cash donation

to help feed the hungry at local

community shelters and food pantries

where the need for food has increased

tremendously over the past few years.

Fans making donations were eligible to

win autographed Penguins memorabilia

during the game.

Since 1992, Penguins fans have

donated over 27,000 pounds of food

and over $23,000 at the team’s Score

Against Hunger drives.

Hot Shots Indoor Sports Arena in Mt. Pleasant hosted the Penguins/Street Hockey

USA Fall Classic tournament Nov. 6-7. Thirty-seven teams participated in five men’s

divisions: D street hockey, Novice street hockey, Puck roller hockey, Competitive ball

roller hockey and Recreational ball roller hockey.

“We had an excellent turnout, excellent officiating, the games ran on time and the

hockey was great,” tournament director Mark Madden said.

“The D street hockey

tournament showed just how odd

hockey can be. Dek-Star beat the

Carnivores, 8-0. The Carnivores

beat the DekRats [Penn Hills, PA],

8-0 in the semifinals. And the

DekRats had beaten Dek-Star in

round-robin play, 3-2. Crazy.”

Puck roller hockey was perhaps

the most competitive division.

“We had seven teams, and

anyone could have made the

final,” Madden said. “Each team

was very good.”

The Fall Classic raised over

$1,000 for breast cancer research.

Describe your game and your strengths: I think I play fast and use my speed to be intense. I create offense, but I’m defensively responsible, too.

What was your first professional goal like? My first NHL goal was in Colorado. I was kind of just going to the net and the rebound came out. There was an empty net, and I just put it in.

What was the most exciting game you’ve played in? The one that sticks out the most was when I was playing with Dallas against the Red Wings for the first time. Growing up in Detroit and having my friends and family there was my most memorable game. I had a goal and we won, too.

What was it like starting the season 9-0 in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton? We have a great group of guys down there. The forwards are playing well — from the first line down to the fourth line. The defense and both goalies have been playing really well for us, giving us a chance to win every game. Everything is coming together so far, even the coaching, with all the guys buying in. It’s a long season, but at the same time when you get a start like that, it helps you carry it through the rest of the year.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending.

The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

What was it like growing up in Farmington? It was great growing up there. It’s a very small community, with a bunch of close-knit groups of friends. It was nice because you could ride your bike anywhere and you didn’t have to worry about anything. It was very middle-class America.

What was your favorite part? It was just the friends I met at the first place I lived on Power Road. That was the thing I remember most because I’m still close to those friends to this day.

Where did you and your friends hang out growing up? My fondest memory is playing in the fort that my dad built in the backyard. I was out there all the time. If we weren’t playing hockey in the backyard we were playing in the tree fort.

What is your favorite restaurant in Farmington? There’s a bunch of staples there. But there’s a place called Greene’s, which is just a very old school burger joint. Small burgers, but they’re the best burgers in the world.

Nov. 10 was a

good news/bad news

day for defenseman

Ben Lovejoy.

The good news:

Lovejoy got back in

the lineup after being

a healthy scratch for

three straight games.

The bad news: The

Penguins lost 7-4

to visiting Boston,

blowing a 4-2 third-

period lead. Lovejoy

was (gulp) minus-3.

“It was great

to get back in the

lineup. Obviously,

that wasn’t the result

we wanted,” said

Lovejoy, 26.

Lovejoy is still

adjusting to the

NHL. He played 12

games for the Penguins last year, two the year before. An undrafted free agent out

of Dartmouth College, Lovejoy had nine goals and 20 assists in 65 games for the

Penguins’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton affiliate last season.

Being scratched is never fun. But Lovejoy tried to make the most of it.

“I had a week of reflection,” said Lovejoy, who had two assists in his first 12 games

this campaign. “You see things you did wrong. You want to correct those mistakes and

go out and play well. I’ve got to keep my game simple. That’s my job.”

When he got scratched, Lovejoy’s shortcomings were left to his own determination.

A detailed explanation from the coaching staff was not forthcoming.

“No,” said Lovejoy. “This is the NHL. There’s no hand-holding here. When you’re

not playing, you’ve got to figure it out for yourself.


Ben Lovejoy knows every game won’t be perfect and that pushing through and learning from mistakes is important to development.

Barring trickledown from

injury, Lovejoy and Deryk

Engelland don’t figure to

be in the lineup at the same

time. They’re competing

for the Penguins’ sixth

defenseman spot. That

creates an unusual

dynamic, since Lovejoy and

Engelland are close friends

dating back to shared time

at Wilkes-Barre Scranton.

“We’ve been roommates

on the road for four years,

and our wives are very

good friends,” Lovejoy said.

“We were roommates at

training camp, too, and we

were rooting for each other.

We both desperately wanted

to be here, to be playing

hockey in the western end of the state. This is a great place to be.

“Obviously, we both want to play. We each bring a different game. When he’s in there,

I cheer for him. I’m sure it’s the same when I’m in there.”

The Penguins have a talented defense corps. Lovejoy is doing his best to learn from

his mates on the blue line.

“I watch all of them,” Lovejoy said. “Obviously, I don’t bring the same things to

the table as [Kris] Letang or [Alex] Goligoski. I want to model my game after [Zbynek]

Michalek and Brooks [Orpik], although I’m not going to be as physical as Brooks.

“They’re both great defensive defensemen, shutdown defensemen at this level. That’s

something I aspire to be.”

The Penguins’ style may get Lovejoy on the scoresheet a few times, though.


Lovejoy aspires to be a defensive defenseman and a shutdown defenseman — similar to teammate Brooks Orpik.

“If you look at our

defense, all of us can

skate,” said the 6-foot-2,

215-pounder. “I think that’s

the mold [general manager] Ray

Shero wanted when he acquired all

his defensemen. They want us to get

up the ice and join the play.”

As noted, Lovejoy served brief NHL

time over the last two years. But it’s a

lot different being with a team from

season’s start.

“The day-in, day-out is certainly different,”

Lovejoy said. “Just the effort people put in. The

world-class talent we have in this room. What they

do off the ice and on the ice. How hard they work

at their games.

“When you’re not here, you watch them

on TV. You see how much talent they have.

But when you see them every day in

practice, and in the weight room, you

appreciate how hard they work to be

good at their games.”
