Dear Friends of Interfaith,
As I reflect on the past year at Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County, I can’t help but think how extraordinarily privileged I am to be shepherding its loving mission and devoted people, from board members and staff to coalition members and caregivers.
The coalition and its everyday work is orchestrated by Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County on a shoe-string budget and by the grace of charitable donations. I give praise to God for empowering us all to perform these Acts of Mercy in communities across Mercer County!
On behalf of all those who receive care through Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County, I offer my profound gratitude for your contributions last year. We pray that you continue to support our mission in the years ahead, as an advocate, volunteer, donor, grantor, or partner.
I trust that God will, through our collective efforts, give this small but mighty agency the strength and courage to praise his Holy name by living out his will here on earth.
Your humble servant,
Kathy Lo BueChair

Dear Friends of Interfaith,
Through my experience at Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County, I am privileged to witness first-hand the transformation of lives through the unlimited power of love. Coping with a life redefined by age-related issues and limitations challenges the very spirit and the basic need to love and be loved.
One’s life always has potential and worth, something difficult to grasp at times. In 2015, as in each of our 23 years of serving the community, Interfaith Caregivers was the extraordinary channel through which lives were affirmed, enriched, enhanced and sustained through mutual trust and love.
On the following pages, you will read the story of Carol and Ana and the sacred relationship that ensued when they were matched as volunteer and care receiver. With each Interfaith volunteer visit, the circle of life is renewed and the basic need to love and be loved is fulfilled. And thus, we behold lives that are once again worth living!
With heartfelt loving gratitude to all,

Most days Ana Gres sits at her kitchen table pouring over weighty Polish books. Born and raised in Poland, she survived the German occupation and the atrocities that came with it.
She studies encyclopedia and history volumes for references to members of her ancestry. She has published a book, We Survived the Horrors of WWII, based on her research, interviews with her siblings and her own memoirs.
But today it’s Thursday morning. That means Carol, from Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County, is visiting.
Carol has been Ana’s caregiver since 2013. Ana has limited mobility and no remaining family. She would otherwise be homebound and isolated much of the time. Carol is a lifeline for Ana.
But their relationship goes much deeper. Just months before Carol began working with Ana she lost her Polish immigrant parents and she missed them terribly.
Carol and Ana enjoy a friendly visit.

WHO WE SERVE
So, it was no accident that a Group Leader from a member congregation at Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County put Carol and Ana together. She knew both of them well, having conducted a site visit with Ana to evaluate her needs and a thorough assessment of Carol as a potential caregiver.
This Thursday morning, Carol and Ana laugh as they share their mothers’ perogie recipes and sing Polish Christmas carols. Carol insists that she gets more out of her weekly visits than Ana. As St. Francis observed: “it is in giving that we receive.”

Neighbors Helping NeighborsNeighbors Helping Neighbors’ volunteers, like Carol, provide regular contact through phone and home visits, transportation to medical appointments, picking up groceries and prescriptions, and even light help around the home.
While caregivers freely offer their time and talent, there are many resources required to sustain this complex network of 450 caregivers who quietly and humbly serve some 415 care receivers.
Our staff and congregation Group Leaders carefully assess each volunteer and care receiver, using this information to make assignments and monitor each case.
Our caregivers are prepared for service through, not only their faith, but also professional instruction. They receive initial health and safety training, as well as ongoing support and education on pertinent topics ranging from elder abuse to hoarding behaviors.
FundingThe Neighbors Helping Neighbors program is free of charge to care receivers. It is funded in part under Title III of the Older Americans Act of 1965 through a grant from the Mercer County Office on Aging.
Like all our programs and services, it is also supported by charitable donations from individuals and organizations in our community.
Expanded Program With a Community Development Block Grant from the city of Trenton, the program has been expanded. Now, Neighbors Helping Neighbors Stay Healthy promotes wellness for a diverse population in downtown Trenton.
Participants complete a Health Access/Health Promotion Assessment offered in English or Spanish, and receive a comprehensive Healthy Living manual.

During this 24-week exercise and education program, seniors at risk of osteoporosis learn the importance of exercise, nutrition, safety, drug therapy and lifestyle factors.
The program was developed by the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services and North Jersey Regional Arthritis Center.
Last year, we provided 300 program hours to 95 participants in classes at the Hamilton Public Library, Trent Center West Apartments and Saint Mary’s Cathedral Convent in Trenton.
Our program is free-of-charge thanks to support from a Socialization and Recreation grant from the Mercer County Office on Aging and the City of Trenton Community Development Block Grant.
St. Mary’s Project Healthy Bones participants perform strength-build exercises.
COMMUNITY WORKSHOPSInterfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County presents informational programs on issues pertaining to seniors, led by experts in the field who donate their time. These workshops are part of our ongoing volunteer training and are offered free to the public.
