ED I TOR ' S
R ' S NOTE
Wow it's 2012 already.
Somewhere in the Himalayas the Chinese are
busy building giant ships - if Hollywood is to be
believed! Mmm John Cusack!
Personally I'm happily living in ignorant bliss.
After all, in all those Hollywood disaster movies
nothing awful ever happens to us down in the
Southern Hemisphere, so I think I will be just
fine! The rest of you...well....
I wish you all a wonderful and happy New Year.
I hope all your dreams come true, bling and
gestures (and a few of my ex's) are eradicated
from Second Life and the Kardashians
disappear from the face of the earth. Let me
DREAM!!!!!
I look forward to a new year full of exciting new
challenges, amazing content from the super
talented people in our virtual world and the new
people I will meet and who will make my 2012
amazing.

AVALON GROVE
Its a place where fantasy comes to life through marble, alabaster and other mediums. Aeris Shenlin has created something special at Avalon Grove. Its a showcase of sculptures and statues that will take your breath away.
Aeris is just as creative in her RL as she is in her SL. She is a sculptor and has had lessons in anatomy and drawing, so everything she does has amazing attention to detail. You can see the love that has gone into all her work.

Just recently Aeris has started experimenting with creating her sculptures without using parts from kits and full perm sets. The results speak for themselves.
Her work draws inspiration from the realm of fantasy with fairies, elves and even demons, but it wouldn't look out of place in a gorgeous garden or hiding away in a maze or on a beautifully landscaped sim.

If you want to see just what is possible in Second Life, then you do need to check the amazing sculpting skills of Aeris asap! And if you fall in love with something, you can find her sale vendors on the second floor.
Wander around the sim and check out her costume stall and her jewellry store. You can even check out the houses she has built and maybe find a cute new home for yourself.
Spend some time in a trully inspirational place that can add so much to your space on the grid through stunning sculptures and statues. Avalon Grove is a must see!Demon Sculpture

In the 1980s and early 1990s, a sub-genre combining science fiction and fantasy came into prominence. Steampunk is set in a world where steam power is the way of life. It's a world based on a Victorian vision of the future, from gadgets and technology through to the fabulous fashions and accessories.
In Second Life, there are sims dedicated to living out the alternative history that exists in the imaginations of their creators, drawing inspiration from writers such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.
ICON magazine 50
The Destination Guide is full of sims where you can immerse yourself into a world beyond imagining. You can shop, explore or join in the role playing and discover an whole new reality in your virtual reality. From well known Caledon to Port Kasra, Land of Tairais and Mythopoeia.
But the real beauty in Steampunk is the fashions. The main inspiration also springs from the Victorian era, including items like corsets, petticoats, gowns with bustles, suits and top hats, spats and even clothing inspired by the military of that time.
ICON magazine 52
But it's with accessorizing that creativity and the real fun begins. Not only can fashion accessories stay with period pieces such as parasols and canes, but technological inspired accessories add to the romance and wonder. Items such as goggles, timepieces and even fantastical things like ray guns can be found in Steampunk fashion. The only thing holding you back in your imagination.
Steampunk is a lifestyle rich in history, romance and fantasy. It's a world of what could have been if the visions of writers had been real. Explore some of the many sims, experiment with fashion and accessories, and above all,

Everything sits under a big bell, Wrapped into white glory. Steps leaving traces behind, Light beams, breaking at ice crystals, Everything glares and sparkles like a sea of diamonds.
Truly surreal, shining and dreadfully cold.
Fascinated of its bizarre beauty, Gravitation pulls us out.
Hubbubly wild we troll around in the snow, Till exhaustion overcomes us. After darkness falls, We jitter in front of an oven, Waiting for our frozen limbs getting alive again.
So beautiful, so cold,so glittering but dark at the same time - it is winter!

It seems that the world of skin designers has
exploded over the past year with more and
more designers and stores popping up every
day around the grid. Several of them are
talented and do well with their business, but
only a handful of skin designers these days are
true originals; artists who don’t use skin
templates as their base, but create everything
from scratch.
It’s difficult and tedious to create a skin from
scratch that mimics real life so gracefully, but
Tricky Boucher from Belleza seems to have
mastered it, even early on in his career, and
has only gotten better with each skin he has
released.
“I think it's always better to do your own stuff
and not use templates,” Tricky advises.
“Everyone should try to be original and if you
want success, do your work with passion
instead of doing it for the money.”
Each detailed skin that Tricky releases is created
with love and passion, and he puts an
enormous amount of time into each one. From
creases in lips to curves of breasts or hips, each
skin is flawless.
“The personal satisfaction time after time is so
rewarding for me,” Tricky explained. “Being
able to improve from skin to skin even if it’s just
a little is worth it. Good discipline is key to just
about everything in life. Yes it's nice to be your
own boss, but it's hard to be productive if you
don't have good discipline. When I am
working on a skin, I have a real passion for it,
and put my all in it. If I find it becomes tedious
to work, and I am struggling with an idea, I
take a good break and always come back
stronger.”
Spending so much time designing skins has
paid off big for Tricky, but he sometimes misses
the relaxation aspect of Second Life. For new
designers, he cautions that work can consume
your time in Second Life and you need to be
prepared for that.
“I think the biggest drawback is not having the
time I'd like to spend exploring, or going to live
music events,” he cautions. “I find whenever I
am in SL lately I am working, so it would be
nice to be able to ‘enjoy’ my time a little more.”
Though he doesn’t get out from the walls of
Belleza much, Tricky said he has enjoyed
meeting his customers and fans from around
the grid. However, he explains that the
intimidation factor of being such a well-known
skin designer has hindered his social game a
bit outside of the store.
“When I am at Belleza people will come up to
me and talk, usually chatting about the skins,
asking questions,” he explains. “But when I am
out somewhere else – a club, party, something
like that – it is totally different, I'm not sure why.
I think I am pretty friendly and approachable. I
guess some find my being the creator behind
Belleza intimidating or just don't know me at
all.”
Tricky’s success would not be possible at all if it
weren’t for the staff and team he has around
him, as well as his aggressive advertising and
of course, word-of-mouth campaigns by SL
residents.
“Belleza's success is mostly due to the great
team I have around me,” he said. “They help
me make good business decisions and give me
inspiration. I try to always be open to ideas, I
think that is really important. When I first
started I advertised pretty aggressively, which
was great because not many others were.”
So, what can we expect to see next from
Belleza? Well, that answer is also ‘Tricky’…

Vaya Con DiosWRITTEN BY SAHARA MEHRTENS
PHOTOS SUPPLIED BY LULU JAMESON
For most people, boredom brings on negatives – negatives such as over spending, indulging in activities that they shouldn’t, and messing around in places they shouldn’t. But for Lulu Jameson, SL photographer, graphic artist and most recently skin designer, boredom brings on the drive to challenge himself in new ways.
“I’m one of those people who needs to do new things,” he explained, “who quickly gets bored if there isn’t any challenge.”
His new drive in SL is his store venture, Vaya Con Dios, a skin and body shop that is quickly gaining attention and is growing at a rapid pace. Lulu started his store as a way to express his creativity and share it across the grid. He most enjoys seeing people use his designs to express themselves.
“I like the idea of helping people get their own style,” Lulu stated. “That's the best way to see how creative avatars can be.”
Starting up the store has been a challenging venture for Lulu, and he explained that the first challenge he had was naming the store.
“Vaya Con Dios is a great way to think – positive. It means nothing, or no one, can make you feel bad,” he said. “It should be something you wish for yourself and for others. And I have to thanks my RL sister for her help and my Spanish blood for help in naming the store. I was born in France, with 50% Spanish blood and 50% Italian.”
So far Lulu has had a huge amount of success with his store opening, but his biggest success, he explains, is hearing that his customers are happy.
“Making a client happy is very important for me,” he said. “It's really pleasant to get encouragement or advice to get better. Glory, power, money... all this stuff is quite fake in SL. My challenge is more about opportunity and doing something new. People may like it or not, but the important thing is to do it your own way.”
Though he has created several different designs, so far Lulu’s favorite design is his Rafael skin because of its versatility.
“I love the Rafael Skin and Express yourself hairbases, also all tintable items (eyebrows add-ons, freckles, scars & cut for lips, eyes, eyebrows) because it's something people can use no matter the style they wear,” Lulu said.
It takes time for each piece Lulu creates, and he puts lots of details and work into each piece. Once he puts his mind to creating something, it becomes an obsession.
“It depends how long each piece takes,” he said. “I'm kind of obsessed when I have something in mind. I can work hours, days, night non-stop to accomplish what I want.”
Lulu pulls in inspiration from many different areas and facets from across the grid as well as in real life. But the thing that he treasures most is the fact that he is like no one else, no other designer or photographer in Second Life and his unique style is recognized throughout SL.
“I get my inspiration from photography, music, my everyday life, people I care about and inspire me, my family, my tastes,” he said. “I admire many, but I don't want to be like anyone else. Why should we strive to be like someone else? It's already so much work to be ourselves.”
Forever A Pixeldoll!Written and Photographed by Jordan Whitt
January 1st 2012 will be remembered as a black day around
the grid. It marks the loss of a truly iconic store in Second
Life - Pixeldolls.
It was one of the first stores I fell in love with in Second Life,
and to this day, five years later, it remained one of my
favourite shopping spots. I must have at least one colour of
every item sold in my inventory. I would like to thank
Nephilaine Protagonist for introducing me to fashion in
Second Life and for filling my inventory with texture, colour
and gorgeous fashions I just adore.

The Gospel TruthWritten by Solitaire HighfieldPhotos by Sophielle and Solitaire Highfield
Ever since his early days in SL Gospel Voom,
owner of GOS, knew he wanted to create – he
just wasn’t sure exactly what his niche was.
“When I first came into SL, I just ambled
around the place giving noobs a bad name. I'd
read a lot of marketing hype in the press
concerning Second Life and I was intrigued.
The demise of gambling and banking, the
boom and bust of big business and to a lesser
extent 'Land Barony' was something I watched
with interest. I felt that the real 'enablers' of
Second Life were the content creators and the
entertainers – and they were lost in the noise,”
he explained. “I had every intention of creating
but I was looking for a niche. It then dawned
on me that the real trick was to make things
better and evolve the experience. I think a lot of
professional designers had the same idea.
When I look around at established brands
today it's no surprise how many started out in
2007.”
ICON magazine 148
But, it wasn’t the items he is well known for that
he had first started with, he had an interest in
sim and land development.
“I got my first big break in sim development,”
he said. “I was creating award winning
'immersive learning experiences' and I had to
learn how to do it all which was the fun part. It
wasn't until I was on a hiatus between projects
that I started to make some eyewear and shoes
and came to the attention of the fashion
community. I built a store, and sold so many it
made me rethink my entire operation.”
From that point on Gospel has built quite a
name for himself and his business is one of the
most recognized brands in Second Life.
However, Gospel attributes much of the credit
to his “trusted critics” and partners in scripting.
“I will remake an item multiple times until it
'pops and zings' in world. If I don't get an
immediate "OMFG!" from trusted critics I know
it's not going to fly,” he said. “After that it's
about making sure the item works as it should
and here I'd argue we're second to none when
it comes to the scripted functions in our
ICON magazine 150
products. Everything my colleague Elpis Oh of
the code-fu learned working on interactive
experiences has gone into our items. Now I
don't for one minute believe that you can sell
fashion items based on your scripting but you
can certainly lose people if it doesn't work
properly. I think we've raised the bar and
expectations and it's why we get a huge
amount of repeat business.”
Unlike many creators and designers, Gospel
still makes time to relax in Second Life. His
favorite activity is spending time watching and
participating in duck races!
“I race ducks, no really I do” he said.” I built a
race track called "Quackerstone" on my sim
water and Elpis added a timed circuit with
power ups, gates and a jump. I even have a
duck-whistle I can 'blow' which makes all the
ducks on the course fly off in a random
direction for ten seconds .. so imagine the fun I
have up here on my platform when I see
people racing below. I laughed my arse off
when I saw that Linden Lab had listed it in
showcase under 'Sports & Hobbies'.”
Gospel’s not one-hundred percent sure where
his business is going in the future, but some of
the new advancements in SL have him pretty
excited.
“I'm really excited about mesh,” he said. “It's a
game changer and will have a dramatic effect
on large swathes of the community. So I'm
looking forward to expanding into more sectors
and having a go at lots of new and exciting
product-lines.”
We are excited to see where he takes his
business, and are so happy to celebrate where
he’s been!

ETHER A TRULLY GLOBAL AUDIENCE."
Movies have The Oscars, TV has The Golden
Globes, theatre has The Tonys and Second Life
has the Avi Choice Awards. This year's Favorite
Male Musician was the man every Eponymous
fan screams for - Russell Eponym.
Russell lives in North Wales where he is a
professional musician. He discovered SL six
years ago while playing live concerts in other
programs. Russell was attracted by the sound
quality of SL. "In the first few hours I was here I
was streaming my first show. I had no idea
what I was doing. It was an age of discovery. A
brave new world of possibilities." Within six
years he has over 1,000 members in his
group, plays in over half a dozen locations
around the grid, and gives poetry readings.
ICON magazine 156
There are a number of instruments that Russell
plays including the guitar, banjo, mandolin and
harp, to name just a few. He credits his style as
"100% live acoustic music, 21st Century folk
music. I play finger style guitar and I write my
own material." His music is a combination of
styles - a bit bluesy, a bit celtic and a hint folksy.
When you go to hear him play you're going to
get a good mix of original music, instrumental,
traditional and popular covers. Russell credits
his inspiration as the early blues musicians as
well as the "British and American folk
movement - Bert Jansch, John Renbourne,
Dylan, and of course the many celtic and gaelic
artists who were around a few decades ago."
You can catch Russell at several wonderful
spots. He plays to a packed house every
Sunday morning at Guthries. He is a resident
musician at Lake Daanan and has given
concerts at Fleur's Enchanted Corner, The
Drunken Drow and Music Park at Prim
Economy.
In his spare time Russell likes to be outdoors in
his home of Northern Wales where he resides
near the beach. He spends a great deal of time
with his instruments and writing music as well
as watercolor painting. As we were wrapping
up our time together I asked Russell what his
advice is for new performing artists. He
became rather reflective in answering. "To be
successful you have to work hard. Be prepared
to play to empty houses at first but don't give
up. Most important of all, be yourself and find
your own way of being with your audiences.
Build your own following slowly and sincerely.
It's a wonderful thing to do, but if you expect to
be a superstar overnight, you may as well leave
SL now."
If you get the chance to take in one of Russell's
concerts, do so. You will find a fun, friendly and
warm welcome awaiting you. There is always
something for everyone. And hey, we all
scream for Russell, so why shouldn't you.

We are back bringing you more fantastic artists and their spectacular work. Everyone loves to
capture their Second Life on film. We all have photo files full of snapshots we have taken
through our journey, capturing those special moments. There are those who take those
snapshots and through a mix of imagination, talent and skill elevate those moments to art. This
issue we're taking a peek at the work of Skip Staheli, Lulu Jameson and Stephen Venkman. Enjoy!
Skip Staheli is a Taurus, born in 1968. He is from
the Netherlands and lives with his dog and two cats.
Whether it is art, dance, designer future, clothes or
the beauty in people, he describes himself as very
visual. This is probably why he became a
photographer here in Second Life. He does not,
however, call himself a pro or an artist. "I am still
learning and always playing, trying stuff. Most of the
time I really do not know how I made the piece at
the end."
Skip Staheli
Portraits are his first love and his specialty. It is a
challenge for him to make it so life like, drawing on
the eyes, skin and hair. He always tries to get to
know the model while shooting them. This is so he
can reflect their personality in the photos he creates
for them. His goal is to touch his clients and the
viewer with his work. Skip enjoys blending real life
elements with SL photos.
His style is romantic, soft and emotional. "I try to put
in every piece I do a bit of my feelings of that
moment. I simply call them powerful pieces of art."
You can catch more of his lovely art at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37690108@N05/.
I have had the pleasure of working with Lulu
Jameson and have found him to be a very humble
and amazing artist. In his real life he has always
been attracted to drawing, but never reall
practiced it. "I found the SL universe very
interesting, it offers so many possibilities. I'm
talking fashion, landscaping and poses. It became
natural for me to use my avatar to express my
feelings." This was when he started using
Photoshop
Lulu Jameson
Lulu started by doing pictures for himself. It was not
long before he was suprised by the request of his
friends wanting their picture taken. He found that
doing photography for a client totally different from
working for himself. "To me it's really important to
make the person I do pictures for happy. It is not
easy to be a photographer, as you always give a
part of yourself in your work. So there is always a
possibility to be judged." He took it slow at first not
wanting to burn out his creativity or get tired of
doing photos.
Lulu was destined for more and it was not long
before designers came knocking wanting him to
create works of art for him.
There are a variety of styles that Lulu works in from
comic art to portraits. He finds inspiration in a
number of places including life, the people he cares
about, cinema, dance and music. There are a
number of RL artist and photographers who inspire
his imagination. I hope this his art inspires yours.
From the SL4B artist ghetto comprising of many
new faces on Flickr, a community was born. They
came from all over the world and were in awe of
what they saw and how they could express that
wonderment in the images that they posted daily
on their streams. "It was magical, the place, the
time, the people and I’ve not experienced anything
like it since." Stephen found himself curating an in-
world gallery which consumed him for almost two
years before he finally stepped away to relax,
explore and taking pictures again. Since that time
he has been involved with several in-world
publications as photographer, writer and art
editor.
Music has always been Stephen Venkman's outlet
for creativity after an injury made him give up
playing the drum kit. Looking for something
different to do one night, he stumbled upon Second
Life from an online advertisement as he was surfing
the web. Once Stephen realized the creative nature
of SL he started taking images to chronicle his
experience. Stephen was introduced to post
processing software from a friend he had made on
a secondary website where a community of avatars
had gathered showing off their creations. The
realization of pushing the envelope with his images
was born. He had found his muse in the creative
minds inhabiting Second Life.
Stephen Venkman
These days Stephen can be found in his
studio creating shapes and characters,
or roaming the grid for obscure places
to take a picture. "It becomes a treasure
hunt to find a new location before you see someone
else's take on Koin-up or Flickr. I’m not really sure
there is any originality left and find myself
influenced by everything around me, be it digital or
organic. It has all been done before in one form or
another." The most satisfying part for Stephen is
seeing how it unfolds in post processing. "Is the
image spectacular as it stands and does it only need
a few tweaks for color and contrast? Or does it take
on a life of its own during the tweaking and become
something completely different?
It is a great lift to create something that makes
someone feel and understand where you are
coming from. Much like music fed my soul for many
years, I’ve found another table to sit at and the
menu is abundant of possibilities." I hope that you
enjoy his amazing work and check out more of his
art and work.
That brings us to the end of this months art capture!
There are so many wonderful and amazing artist to
be celebrated! We will continue to bring you new
ones every other month. Make sure to take a break
from your hectic SL schedule and appreciate the
amazing work by our three artist of the month.
Over the Rainbow to OZWritten by Lexie JansmaPhotos by Sophielle
Click your heels together three times and be
transported to the decadent Oz Night Club.
This art deco inspired supper club is awash in
brilliant emerald hues, where classic jazz tunes
float across the air waves to tickle your toes
and take you to a bygone era of elegance and
opulence. Its a time when women dressed in
fine gowns and men wore three piece suits
everyday. Tymus Tenk and Truck Meredith have
created this jewelry box of a club as part of
their Calas Galadhon Park Sims.
You can see the love and devotion to the place
in every detail. "Step into another place and
time, a place of romantic entertainment and a
time of classical elegance," says Tymus about
the club. "The music is from the late 20s, 30s
and early 40s, with an updated arrangement,
set in a high art deco night club. The lobby
area is lush and seems straight out of a great
movie house. Large industrial murals on the
wall instantly take you back in time. Frothy
fronds from the ferns brush against you. Art
deco wall sconces in emerald and gold frame
the door to the ladies lounge."
ICON magazine 168
Step through emerald and green deco columns
into the ballroom. A small stage in the center is
where the live acts perform standing in front of
an amazing art deco painting called Cotton
Club from the Edison Hotel, NY. There is
another wonderful mural from the Manhattan
Hotel in Tokyo to the right and an elegant
balcony to take that someone special on. What
club called Oz would be complete without the
ruby slipper, Glinda or The Wicked Witch. You
will find them all here. When you are tired of
dancing rest your weary feet at a nearby table
that has been reserved just for you, complete
with champagne. Let the dancers entertain you
as you visit with a friend or two.
When you enter the ladies room a black and
white oasis greets you with a wall of black and
white photos of famous Hollywood performers
on the wall. See if you can guess who they all
are. Through a portico in a palm front wall
papered room are intricately carved dressing
tables and toiletries to touch up your makeup.
The walls are all decorated with lavish art deco
prints.
Calas Galadhon host a variet of events on their
sims including several live performers at their
different venues. They have a number of
amazing sims they have turned into natural
environments like misty mountains, Amenelos,
my personal favorite which is based on the
Greek Island Santorini. The Lost Garden of
Thera sits below the waters of Armenelos. If
you want to get a taste of everything then take
their balloon ride across all 10 of their sims.
Do not forget though to click your ruby red
heels together and repeat after me "There's no
place like the Oz Night Club!"

DJ Phoenixx Constantine
He is known as DJ Phoenixx Fire to his fans and
Nixx to his friends. He came to Second Life
nearly six years ago, after seeing it on CSI:NY.
He learned a great deal in his first year here,
as well as renewing his interest in blues music.
Nixx began hanging out at clubs, listening to
music and meeting interesting people.
Like so many before him, Nixx soon found
himself taking off his clothes for lindens. When
this did not pan out, he became a manager of
a club, but that was not for him, so he opened
a photography studio. But it was his love for the
blues, and the encouragement of friends, that
saw him begin to spin the blues.
Spinning the blues is his love these days. It has
helped him come out of his shell. He used to
be shy, but DJing has helped him overcome
that. Nixx has learned a lot about the blues,
and wants to share the music with the world.
He attends a lot of live shows and brings that
music back to his fans. At one point he DJ'd ten
shows a week, but due to health reasons he

Confessions of an SL Addict
A Fabulous AddictionWritten by an Addict - Photos by Phe Bruun
It seems that growing up I always viewed lingerie as
something dirty or something that was only made
for a honeymoon night. Scantily clad women in lacy
push-ups and leather corsets were harlots, and
frankly the thought of wearing lingerie was
completely taboo.
In Second Life, however, nothing is taboo. So, I got
the itch to try some on one day. I wanted to be eye
candy for my guy, to give him something nice to
look at.
I remember the first time I walked into Blacklace. I
had no clue what I was doing, what I wanted or
what truly was sexy. So I played the safe route and
bought a teddy.
Slipping it onto my avatar, I felt naughty, mysterious
and beautiful. What I felt was my new addiction, an
addiction that has caused me to own more pieces
of lingerie than any other type of clothing in my
inventory and wearing it more often than a normal
person should!
ict ICON magazine 180
I am addicted to the feeling lingerie gives me.
Romantic. Sexy. Risky. Kinky. There are so many
styles that can make any avatar look voluptuous
and delicious. I love the way lingerie doesn’t hide
my avatar, but it accentuates the curves. It’s a small
treat that makes me feel like a million dollars.
Lingerie makes me more fabulous like an old-time
movie star. Putting on the sexy strappy garments
gives the confidence and the self-control to face the
world with fierceness while others just stare, while I
look extra special.
Lingerie provides a way to indulge myself, to get
dressed up by dressing down. I don’t wear it for
anyone in particular anymore, it’s just for me. I love
the way it makes me feel and makes me look.
Forget about it being my “secret,” I like to wear it
loud and proud around friends, acquaintances, co-
workers, and strangers.
What lingerie does for me is it takes my ordinary
avatar and turns her into a goddess.
So bring on the lace, the boning, the latex, the
leather, the silk, the hooks and buttons, the straps,
the garters, the lining and everything else that goes
into making lingerie so amazing! I can’t wait for my
next new piece!
