Editor’s letterWelcome to ICT for Education’s London conference, an event designed to inform and inspire your teaching of computing and use of ICT tools.

Today’s conference will be led by Claire Lotriet, assistant headteacher at Henwick Primary School in Greenwich and author of the Switched On ‘Computing: Learn to Code’ book series and ‘Computing: Take your first easy steps with Microsoft’. Claire will discuss the teaching and learning of computing and consider where it might go next.

Also focusing on the primary sector, Karine George, a former primary school headteacher, will present some simple and practical examples of how to build effective learning that moves away from the constraints of the classroom and links learners to experts.

In the secondary sector, Michelle Alexander from St Ignatius College will share her experience of teaching computing and computer science.

We’ll also look at the challenges of e-safety with Perry Perrott, head of education at BCS Learning & Development, and consider how to make the internet a positive place for young people and schools. If you have experienced any e-safety incidents you would like to discuss (no names necessary), please raise them during the session.

Our guest speaker today is Andy Hutt, an educational ICT consultant

who will present an informative and entertaining session covering some of the many free and low-cost ICT tools that can enhance your work in the classroom. If you’ve seen Andy at conference before, don’t leave the room as his presentation today is full of new ideas.

If you have questions for the conference speakers, join Question Time, a session that will answer your questions and debate topical issues. Then there is ICT Reviews Live!, an independent product review session that will put products to the test in a live environment and give you real insight into their capabilities. And don’t miss the exhibition hall where you will find suppliers demonstrating their latest products and services.

The refreshments are on us today, so do take a break and have a chat with colleagues, speakers and suppliers.

I hope this brochure will help you navigate the conference and maximise your time. Have a great day and I look forward to meeting you.Best Regards,

Sarah Underwood Editor

These records of achievement are then presented as a timeline for every child, class, subject, key stage or teacher, at the click of a mouse. So Earwig schools are permanently Ofsted-ready.

The Earwig timelines also provide each pupil with a unique and permanent record of their school career and when shared with parents, improve parental engagement

and pupil motivation.

The Earwig EYFS Module enables Early Years teachers to stay on top of the very high reporting demands placed on them, without any extra work and the Assessment Module allows teachers to assess in half the time using any assessment framework they choose, all synced and linked to the multimedia teaching evidence already captured on Earwig.

Our goal is to put the excitement back into Computing at school.

The Computing At School group (CAS) is a grass roots organisation, whose energy, creativity, and leadership comes from its members. CAS is a collaborative partner with the BCS through the BCS Academy of Computing, and has formal support from other industry partners. We speak for the discipline of computing at school level, inc. FE, and not for any particular interest group.

Stand 24: Robots in Schools

Founded by two fathers of school-aged children, and based in Ealing, London, Robots in Schools has developed a world-first: a humanoid robot programmed using the coding languages taught in most schools, including Scratch, Python and Javascript.

Edbot performs over 40 motions, allowing students to experience first-hand the thrill and fun of making a robot act according to their instructions. It is based on the best-selling Robotis Mini, and includes a distance sensor for true autonomic functioning.

Humanoid robots work especially well in classrooms because they generate high levels of pupil engagement. Even the non-techy students want to learn how to code, so they can have their turn controlling Edbot.

With programming now part of the national curriculum in England for all ages, we provide lesson plans as part of the package to help teachers use Edbot to deliver the curriculum to students at different levels and abilities.

Edbot was launched earlier this year and has been greeted with considerable interest both in the UK and internationally.
