Editor’s letterWelcome to ICT for Education’s Manchester conference, an event designed to inform and inspire your teaching of computing and use of ICT tools.

Today’s conference will be led by Bob Harrison, a member of the Department for Education’s ICT National Curriculum group and the UK Forum for Computer Education. Bob will discuss whether the move to the new Computing curriculum has distracted teachers from the use of technology across the curriculum and highlight the need for further development of Computing to be based on different ways of thinking rather than technology.

Ben Davies, a specialist leader of education for Computing and ICT at St Paul’s Primary School, picks up on this with a presentation describing a range of pedagogical strategies that provide pupils with engaging computing lessons that promote conceptual understanding, cross-curricular contexts and a problem solving approach.

Moving on to the secondary school sector, Matt Hogan, an ICT and Computing teacher at Alderley Edge School for Girls, will consider how to engage students with Computing and inspire them to become creative with technology, rather than simply learning to use it.

We’ll also look at the challenges of e-safety with Perry Perrott, head of education at BCS Learning & Development, and consider how to make the internet a positive place for young people and schools. If you have

experienced any e-safety incidents you would like to discuss (no names necessary), please raise them during the session.

Our guest speaker today is Andy Hutt, an educational ICT consultant who will present an informative and entertaining session covering some of the many free and low-cost ICT tools that can enhance your work in the classroom. If you’ve seen Andy at conference before, don’t leave the room, as his presentation today is full of new ideas.

If you have questions for the conference speakers, join Question Time, a session that will answer your questions and debate topical issues. Then there is ICT Reviews Live!, an independent product review session that will put products to the test in a live environment and give you real insight into their capabilities. And don’t miss the exhibition hall where you will find suppliers demonstrating their latest products and services.

The refreshments are on us today, so do take a break and have a chat with colleagues, speakers and suppliers.

I hope this brochure will help you navigate the conference and maximise your time. Have a great day and I look forward to meeting you.

Best Regards,

Sarah Underwood Editor

Lead speakerBob Harrison, Bob Harrison, member of DfE ICT National Curriculum group and UK Forum for Computer Education, vice chair of governors Lostock College, chair of governors Northern College Barnsley

The last couple of years have seen ICT teachers focusing on the reform of the national curriculum. This was necessary and is ongoing as we transition from ICT to Computing. But have we been distracted from the use of technology across the curriculum? Bob will challenge the government’s techno-scepticism and suggest development is not about technology, but different ways of thinking.

09:0009:25

Computing: it’s not just about computers!Ben Davies, SLE for Computing and ICT, St Paul’s Primary School, Manchester

Computers are an integral and highly motivating component of computing lessons. However, by using computers too frequently, we can restrict pupils’ opportunities to develop and apply computational thinking skills. Ben will discuss how he uses a range of pedagogical strategies to provide pupils with engaging computing lessons that promote conceptual understanding, cross-curricular contexts and a problem-solving approach.

09:2510:05

ICT Reviews Live!ICT for Education product reviews team

An independent product review session that will put products to the test and give you real insight into their capabilities. ICT Reviews Live! will be led by the ICT for Education reviews team. Watch the reviews, comment on product content, consider underlying technologies, discuss ease of use and share your opinions on how you would like suppliers to develop products and services to meet the needs of teachers and schools.

Strategies to engage studentsMatt Hogan, ICT and computing teacher, Alderley Edge School for Girls

Matt will cover strategies to engage students with Computing and consider the relevance of e-learning to a range of subject areas and skill sets. He will also consider how to inspire students to become creative with technology, rather than simply learning to use it. A simple but effective message: Take one idea and make it happen.

11:0511:30

What could be more important than e-safety?Perry Perrott, head of education, BCS Learning & Development

Would you let your son or daughter cross the road without applying the Green Cross Code? So why do we allow this behaviour in the virtual world, one which is potentially just as destructive? We want young people to see the internet as a positive and inclusive place that respects people’s differences, but how can we achieve this in education and what challenges do we face?

Stand 21: Computing At School

The Computing At School group (CAS) aims to promote the teaching of Computing at school. CAS was born out of our excitement with our discipline, combined with a serious concern that many students are being “turned off” computing by a combination of factors that have conspired to make the subject seem dull and pedestrian. Our goal is to put the excitement back into Computing at school.

The Computing At School group (CAS) is a grass roots organisation, whose energy,

creativity, and leadership comes from its members. CAS is a collaborative partner with the BCS through the BCS Academy of Computing, and has formal support from other industry partners. Membership is open to everyone, and is very broad, including teachers, parents, governors, exam boards, industry, professional societies, and universities. We speak for the discipline of computing at school level, inc. FE, and not for any particular interest group.

Stand 23: Earwig Academic

Recognised by the DofE, national press and Ofsted, Earwig’s award winning software solves the largest cause of stress for teachers.

Teaching staff are under ever-increasing pressure to provide more teaching evidence and to have it ready at a moment’s notice. Earwig’s app enables teachers to capture moments in the classroom using photos, video and documents, and allocate these easily and quickly to pupils and subjects. These records of achievement are then presented as a timeline for every child, class, subject, key stage or teacher, at the click of a mouse. So Earwig schools are permanently Ofsted-ready.

The Earwig timelines also provide each pupil with a unique and permanent record of their school career and when shared with parents, improve parental engagement and pupil motivation.

The Earwig EYFS Module enables Early Years teachers to stay on top of the very high reporting demands placed on them, without any extra work and the Assessment Module allows teachers to assess in half the time using any assessment framework they choose, all synced and linked to the multimedia teaching evidence already captured on Earwig.

Earwig teachers describe the system as; “Revolutionary”, “Has halved my paperwork” and as something “I wish we’d had years ago”.

Humanoid robots work especially well in classrooms because they generate high levels of pupil engagement. Even the non-techy students want to learn how to code, so they can have their turn controlling Edbot.

With programming now part of the national curriculum in England for all ages, we provide lesson plans as part of the package to help teachers use Edbot to deliver the curriculum to students at different levels and abilities.

Edbot was launched earlier this year and has been greeted with considerable interest both in the UK and internationally.
