Why Integrate ICT in Education?

Developments in ICT have changed the world dramatically, bringing about significant changes in society and in labor markets.

ICT has changed the ways people live and work and the ways people communicate with one another. Countries that are using ICT extensively have become knowledge societies, societies that are reliant on creating, sharing, and using electronically communicated knowledge for their prosperity.

Microsoft Live@edu is a free suite of hosted Microsoft services and applications that are intended for educational needs.

The Live@edu program provides education institutions with a set of hosted collaboration services, communication tools, and mobile, desktop, and web-based applications, as well as data storage capabilities. The Live@edu suite includes Microsoft applications for collaboration including: Office Live Workspace, Windows Live SkyDrive, Windows Live Spaces, Microsoft SharedView Beta, Microsoft Outlook Live, Windows Live Messenger, and Windows Live Alerts.

Cloud computing refers to the provision of computational resources on demand via a computer network.In the traditional model of computing, both data and software are fully contained on the user's computer.In cloud computing, the user's computer may contain almost no software or data (perhaps a minimal operating system and web browser only), serving as little more than a display terminal for processes occurring on a network of computers far away.


The term Web 2.0 is associated with web applications that facilitate participatory information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web.

Learning institutions are under pressure to prepare students for the changing face of society and the workplace, forcing the issue of integrating ICT into education.

Despite the numerous potential benefits of ICT for education, there are many varied issues and challenges that countries, systems, and schools face when integrating ICT in education. Overarching all of them is the need for a national policy for ICT in education. Too often countries embark on ICT projects without clear policy directions, with the result that development is often piecemeal.
