Process Journal
1st WeekThis week has been a really busy week in terms of organization, because started the process journal and because the first part of the process journal (the script) is probably one of the hardest ones because it’s the most creative one, and you have to plan in detail how my product will be. Given that the video will be a piece of drama the script is more important than the story board
Script
Man is smoking a cigarette waiting for the bus.
Man 2: why do you smoke, it is really bad for your lungs and is extremely carcinogenic!?
Smoker: I can’t stop and I am really not so concerned with my health.
Man 2: If I were you I would go to a doctor for a checkup as lung cancer is not a joke… it is lethal.
Smoker: Here is the number of a very good specialized doctor. Go checkup!!!
Phone call
Doctor: Hello, how can I help you?
Smoker: I would like to book an appointment for a cancer check.
Doctor: Fine, I have a free hour at 17:00 in 2 months.
Smoker: That is definitely too far away I must need an earlier appointment even for the cost of paying a lot of money.
Doctor: Fine I’ll see what I can do.
Smoker: Okay Bye
Doctor: Bye
A week after…
Phone call
Doctor: Hello, I have managed to move up some other appointments and I am ready to receive you in two days, however the cost of the appointment is now 600 euros, is it fine?
Smoker: Yes that is fine, at what time is the appointment?
Doctor: 2PM sir, I await to see you
Smoker: Thanks, Bye
Doctor: Bye.
At the appointment
Doctor: After analyzing your body, especially your lungs, I can tell you that they are severely damaged from carcinogenic chemicals which cigarettes contain, I highly recommend you stop smoking because cancer is really a near threat as you are a probable victim of lung cancer.
Smoker: Thanks doctor, that was not what I wanted to hear but I will have to accept it. I will without doubt stop smoking this instant even though it will be a life’s mission.
Smoker pays the appointment fee
Smokers walk back home thinking about the smoking past
While walking back home he looks at the e cigarette shop in front of his home, walks into it and buys an electronic cigarette after dialog with owner of shop
Owner: Hello sir, how can I help you?
Smoker: Hello, I would like to stop smoking with the electronic cigarette which I heard helps people stop, is that correct?
Owner: Yes that is correct, we have various models of electronic cigarettes and the price varies from 69-89 euros depending on the kit. Which one would you like?
Smoker: I would like the more expensive one as I want the better quality product.
Owner: Thanks for the payment, Bye
Smoker: Bye
After three months of smoking the e cigarette…
Phone call
Doctor: Hello, how can I help you?
Smoker: Hello I would like a follow up visit to see how my body is after three months of no smoking, when is your first free appointment?
Doctor: My only free time in eight months is today in two hours, would you like to come, it will be 600 euros?
Smoker: Yes, sure I will be there, Bye
Doctor: Bye
At the appointment:
Doctor: After analyzing your body and especially your lungs I can see that there are significant improvements from the last time and cancer is now a long way from you as your lungs are much more cleaner and don’t have all the carcinogenic substances present in your body last time I visited you.
Smoker: I am really happy to hear these words from you as I was really concerned about cancer and other lethal diseases caused by smoking. Thank you for the appointments and the visits, and all the tests.
Smoker pays the fee of the appointment.
THE END
2nd Week
Lesson 1This lesson has been dedicated to finding actors who could perform in my video. From a research I have made, it appears that women are more prone to addiction to cigarette; therefore I thought it was a good idea to have female characters in my video.
The actors in my video will be:
1. Margherita Messina – Man 22. Ludovica Zaccardi - Doctor3. Sofia Barigazzi – Smoker
Lesson 2 + Free TimeToday I started filming my product. I am trying my best to respect my “Step-by-step plan” so today I recorded the first half of the video. Given that I had less time that I thought, my video is not going to be exactly as I had planned in the storyboard, so with one of my class mates we made the actors perform and we recorded the same performance from different perspectives. In the performance we’ve put some elements from both my friend’s plan and mine, and this is why the video is going to be different from what I have planned. Overall it’s coming pretty well though.
3rd Week
Lesson 1 + Free TimeToday I managed to finish recording the second half of the video. I am trying my best to follow the schedule of the “Step-by-step” plan, even though I’m late with the dates, because Mr. Mariani has moved the dead line, so I have a week and a half more to give my product in. The only problem I am going to have with my video will be the noise made by the little kids in the playground while we were recording, so there is some background noise over the actors while they speak. I really hope that the product will turn out pretty fine.
Free TimeI started editing my video using the software iMovie on my MacBook. I added all the textures, the images and the writing of the information.
Free TimeI added the song “Lost in the Echo” by Linkin Park as background music, and given that I had about one minute left, I put the song “Basquait” as ending song. Next I balanced the sound so that the sound of the videos and the music don’t overlap.
Once I finished editing the video, I exported it into an actual file, ready to upload
EvaluationI have tested my product using my test table.

I have made a friend of mine test my product using this table and the results were the same.
The only point of my list that my product didn’t meet is explaining directly how smoking affects and damages the lungs. I will have to make sure that next time I make my product I will follow my test table in order to avoid missing some points.
I have taken another friend who smokes and I asked him some feedback. He was amazed from how professional my video looks and was affected by seeing what harmful substances cigarettes actually contain, which he didn’t know much about before.
Given that the one I tested actually learned something, I can say that my product was actually successful in it’s purpose. 99% of my tests were successful. This means that I worked hard and well, but again there is always room for improvement. As I said next time I will follow my test table while editing in order not to miss anything.
My performance throughout the investigation stage was pretty good in my opinion, because after having written an introduction, and after having done many good questions leading my research, I have used a decent variety of sources to answer those questions. When it got to the design stage I had a lot more stuff to do, but I think that what helped me a lot were my organizational capacities, and thanks to them I managed to meet all the deadlines. In the designing stage I have written my design brief and specification, stating my limits, demands and wishes for the final outcome. My performance in this stage was quite fine. The planning stage was the one that went worst, perhaps because I didn’t work hard enough on my storyboards in class, and had to do a lot at home. In the end they were good but I could have specified some more things such as the color and what kind of music I wanted to put in the video. I have managed anyway to test all of the designs with my test table. What I am really proud of is my creating stage. I had never edited a video by myself. I opened iMovie not knowing at all what to do, but thanks to my inquiry skills and to the simplicity of the software I have managed to learn the different techniques and uses of the software, creating a successful product.
As stated this project had a great impact on myself because It had me learning how to use iMovie, which I had never even opened up before. I have also learned a lot about what normal cigarettes contains, such as the acids. I am really pleased with myself and this new skills will surely help me in future projects.
As seen with my friend who in this case acted as a sample of my target audience, we know that my video was successful because he actually learned some new things about the harmful properties of cigarettes, not contained In electronic ones, and actually started smoking electronic ones. I can say then that my project was successful in achieving it’s purpose.
This project connects with the A.O.I. Human Ingenuity, because it tests the use and the benefits of technology and especially health related technologies, therefore also to the Health and Social. Moreover the unit connects to Community and Service because it promotes something which prevents many deaths due to smoking, and so a benefit for our community and our society in general.
