Sensor then reads them when food is brought and
compares them with those stored

Passports Passports contain a microchip This chip is an RFID (Radio Frequency
Identification) chip
This stores the users photograph and all theirpersonal info. They were introduced to increase security
At the airport: At passport control:
The access code is scanned which holds all thepersonal information
The reader- communicates with the chip and thecustoms official can view the stored image
Face- automatically recognised by biometric software

Advantages of using Netbooks inschools Easily fitting into bag because of design
Thieves- unable to tell that its a netbook asopposed to school books
There would be enough space on a desk for anetbook and text book
They boot up in just over 20 seconds of beingswitched on
Theyre WiFi enabled therefore can remainlogged in to it as they move around the school

Transferring images
Methods of transferring photos from camera/mobilevia:
Bluetooth- allows exchange of data over shortdistances from fixed and mobile devices. However forthem to communicate the devices must be able tounderstand the Bluetooth rules (protocols)
USB (Universal Serial Bus)- can connect devicessuch as keyboards to a computer
Flash Memory Card- Known as a solid state storagedevice i.e. There are no moving parts. Everything iselectronic as opposed to mechanical therefore ideal formobile devices

Connecting to the internet
Ways to connect to the internet from computers:
By Cable Using a wireless connection

Online photo albums
This can be used instead of emailing copies of
photos to friends. The albums allow access to the people they want
to show.
Uploading as well as storing images online is a
safer method than simply keeping them on acamera or netbook.
This means theyre still available even if they getdeleted or stolen.

Cloud computing
This is a system where computer programs and
data are stored centrally To access it all, all you need is a internet
connection and an input device
Because of this, theres no need to buy/install
expensive software/ powerful computers andhard disk drives

Recent keywords
Hotspot- a venue that offers WiFi connection
Cloud computing- a system which all computerprograms and data is stored on a central serverwhich is owned by a company such as Googleand accessed virtually
Web app/application- any applicationaccessible using a web browser. It can be assimple as a message board or guest sign-in pageon a website or as complex as a spreadsheet

GPS- sat navs
This is a device which is usually used within a car. Itgives directions which are based on information
received from a series of satellites GPS is satellite-based and is made up of 24 satellites
The GPS receiver compares the time a signal wastransmitted with the time it was received
W
ith this time difference, the GPS receiver tells howfar away the satellite is With the distance measurements from at least 3
satellites, the users position can be determined by thereceiver and displayed on the sat nav units electronic
map.

Convergence
One of the features of modern digital devices
This is where one device is developed so that itcan carry out functions that were originallyperformed by other devices
E.g. Mobiles primary function was to make calls
however it can now be used for other things Examples could be taking photos, listening to
music etc They now are beginning to have GPSfacilitates

Convergence and GPS GPS can now be used to link an online photo album The images have exact geographical coordinates of
where the photograph was taken (allowed by GPS) It allows you to take a picture and then store things
like time, data, camera type, speed and exposure onthe file
This information is known as metadata If you double click on the GPS latitude, Google Maps
opens up and shows exactly where the picture was
taken (You are able to geotag images by creating free
online albums using e.g. Google docs and then useGoogle Earth to geotag them)

Privacy Issues
The technological developments can lead to newissues
Examples of this: The GPS tracking devices has allowed a mother to
track her sons whereabouts on his gap year While travelling in Thailand, Australia and South
Africa, see insisted him to wear a tracker so she couldlog onto a website and find his exact location
Questions asked by this were following the lines ofwhether the mother was violating the sons privacywith the help of his tracking device
