SPRING 2020 TECHNICAL ELECTIVE: Technology Based Startups: Biomimetics Focus COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON www.uakron.edu The University of Akron is an Equal Education and Employment Institution © 2016 by The University of Akron » Do you want to learn how technology based startups get started? » Interested in working in a diverse interdisciplinary team ? Brainstorm ideas, create prototypes? » Do you want to create biologically inspired designs to solve real problems? » Enjoy small class sizes combined with practical learning? Then this class is for you! Course Overview Open to all UA students, in this elective you will learn how nature has evolved designs to solve a variety of complex problems through practical examples from world class instructors who work in the field of Biomimicry at UA. You will form small teams, learn to brainstorm, and come up with ideas for real world applications. Teams are awarded up to $500 to develop prototypes and work on customer discovery. This is a hands on project oriented course that seeks to create interdisciplinary groups of science majors, business students & engineers to create startup teams to learn how to commercialize breakthrough ideas. Class projects can be either focused on biomimicry or other technologies. The University of Akron has a rich treasure trove of patents that could be also be mined for projects ideas. Examples range from Gecko inspired adhesives, fibers inspired by spider silk, mussel based underwater adhesives, to structural colors based on bird feathers and butterflies etc. If you have other startup ideas based on your current research or senior design projects, you are welcome to explore them after getting approval from the instructor.
