let me start by appying a itte

    perspective n the Russian

    eectrnic cmpnents market.

    Unti cmparativey recenty the USSR

    perated in a closed command

    economy where the state dictated

what was t be prduced and by

whom, and apparenty kept the bywhen deiberatey vague.

As a resut materia deiveries where

pry schedued and ten ate, with a

years suppy ten arriving in a singe

shipment. In rder t cmbat this ver-

    r-under suppy situatin the Russian

    suppy chain estabished an inrma

    system passing prducts between

pants in a rudimentary barter system.

    Hwever the inrma barter system

    eventuay became a amst rmaised

    trading peratin with many individuas

heping t baance demand by buying

    - r steaing - and seing excess

inventry and in the prcess, adding

t a cuture crruptin rm whichsme in the Sviet Cmmunist Party

    hierarchy beneted immensey.

    The advent Glasnost (penness)

    and Perestroika (market rerms)

    under President Grbachev in the

    mid 1980s drve huge changes

    thrughut the Russian empire,

utimatey eading t the breakup the

USSR. The greater cus n iberaising

    and rerming the Russian ecnmy

created pprtunities r individuasand rganisatins bth within and

utside the cuntry but in the prcess

    created enrmus tensins. Having

t manage huge change in an entire

    sci-ecnmic system resuted in a

    near ecnmic disaster.

Russia has huge reserves naturalresources particuary gas (argest

    gba exprter) and oil (secnd

    argest gba exprter), bth which

    have generated huge revenues r

    the cuntry and enabed massive

    ecnmic investment.

    Unrtunatey investment cyces

    these cmmdities and the primary

    beneciaries have ten prved t

    piticians wh were granted generus

shares in rmay state run enterprises.

    invesTMenTThe Russian Gvernment eventuay

    recgnised that the eectrnics sectr

    and in particuar the semicnductr

industry cud be an area high

    grwth and strategic imprtance r

the cuntry. In the 60s 70s and 80s

    it invested heaviy in semicnductr

    manuacturing, creating the closed

city (imited access, n reigners, n

    phtgraphs) Zelonograd with the

aim rivaing the USs Siicn Vaey.Despite recating 5,000 scientist

and engineers t the new city the

    prject prved unsuccessu and

rm the mid 80s the cuntry suered

    signicant brain drain as many

    the cuntrys best techngists

    migrated away, principay t the

US and Israe. In 2006 the Russian

    gvernment annunced pans t

    invest $40bn in the semicnductr

sectr but a sharp drp in the price

    cmmdities undermined this activity

and the investment has nt yet reay

    recvered.

    Three TyPes of coMPanies

    Russian eectrnics manuacturers

can be brady summarised int three

    grups:

    1. Gvernment-backed ederaenterprises;

    2. private cmpanies unded in theree market;

    3. subsidiaries primariy mutinatinarganisatins.

    Federa Gvernment Enterprises

    are the remnants state cntred

    enterprises which cntinue t be

    managed by the Russian Ministry

    Industry and Trade, which directs

    60% its activity twards miitary

    appicatins, with the baance primariy

    directed twards dmestic industria

    prducts and inrastructure markets.

    Chinas market demand

    r semicnductrs and

    cmpnents in 2012 is

nt cear r many suppiers and

    distributrs. With reduced exprt

    rders rm Eurpean cuntries,

    these suppiers and distributrs

had a bad time in deaing with

    exprt based custmers in the

secnd ha 2011. Hwever, we d

    nd sme cmpanies have steady

    grwth thrugh deveping niche

    business strategies. In this market

    inteigence reprt, China Outlook

    Consulting anaysts wi share with

yu ur ndings n these cmpanies

    business strategies and insights

    abut the market.

    Doing well in 2011

2011 was nt a gd year r many

cmpanies but it was a very gd

year r cmpanies that had the right

    business strategies.

CoC anaysts und that having the

right custmers r right p rducts are

the key. Fr instance, a cnnectr

    suppier executive nted that serving

Appe and Nkias EMS heps the

    cmpany grw dramaticay, which

    made the cmpany dierent rm

    its cmpetitrs. o curse, the

    cmpany has we psitined itse

    in deveping high-perrmance and

    high speed prducts.

As, sme niche markets such as

    wireess base-statins has heped

    sme passive cmpnent suppiers

dube their saes by serving this

market. T sme extent it may be

risky that the majrity the grwth

    a cmpany cmes rm ne

    market r ne custmer. Hwever,

it sti heps the cmpany t set a

    undatin r uture grwth.

CoC anaysts und that a gd

prduct was as key t being a

    winner in 2011. High-Density IGBT

is such a prduct that heped sme

    suppiers and distributrs grw

    ver 100% in 2011. In 2011, high

density IGBT demand was s great

that it ed t shrt suppies heped

    by big demands rm aternative

    energy markets. CoC anaysts saw

that sme IGBT suppiers dare nt

prmte their prducts in the secnd

ha 2011 because manuacturingcapacity cudnt satisy the sudden

    demand rm the market.

    The Chinese gvernment encurages

    devepment IGBT prducts

in China and gives unds t ny

    ca IGBT suppiers. Hwever,

    Internatina suppiers can wrk with

ca Chinese partners i they want

t have unds rm the gvernment.

    Since ca Chinese IGBT cmpanies

    can have a state-wned backgrund,

    it heps internatina suppiers r

    distributrs t quicky target a

    specic market and start business

    with ca Chinese custmers.

    1. LED lighting:Many suppiers

cmpain that the lED market hasnt

    Hwever, CoC anaysts think that

nt ny r rad ighting but as r

    smart hme, vehice, smart hme

the simiarities: in 2009 the market

Here end the simiarities. It must be

nted that the panic ate 2008, eary2009, is nt repeating itse and there

    can be n discussin a 2011 market

crash, at best a swdwn. This is best

    exempied by the capacity utiizatin

    the semicnductr manuacturers:

    In Q1 2009, the quarter o horror r

    the chip manuacturers e t 57%.

Other dierences: in 2009 a bm inu swing was stpped, and ater a
