Writing Skills: GET CREATIVE!TRY THESE IDEAS! Take photos of you trying them out in class! Please give the photos to your mentor and we can include the photos in our online blog. You could be famous! Remember when teaching: The more memorable the lesson, the more likely the students are to remember the work Make lessons fun, make it fUnNY!, make it a lesson worth remembering.Writing Warm-ups and introduction activities

1. Idea One: Look and writePut things into a bag like the one below. Teacher asks if students can guess what is inside the bag. Try get students to use full sentences & creative adjectives. Teacher can help students, asking things like, What colour do you think it is? Is it big or small? What do you think it smells like? etc. Give some model sentences beforehand to help with student confidence.

Teacher takes one item out the bag & holds it up for the students to see. Teacher asks students to write 3 sentences down in their books to describe the thing.

Teacher asks some students to read out their answers.

Repeat until all items are out the bag.

OR2. Idea Two: Touch & speakTeacher calls one student up to front. Teacher tells child to close their eyes. Child can put their hand into the bag, take one item out, tell the class what it feels like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like, and what they think it looks like. Repeat.

3. Idea Three: 5 Senses warm-upShow students funny pictures. Ask them questions about each of the 5 senses. For example: TEACHER holds up a picture of a man for everyone to see. Then teacher asks: What does his feet smell like? eg. His feet smell like eggs! What does his nose look like? eg. His nose looks like a long yellow banana. What does he sound like? eg. He sounds like an ambulance. What does his hair feel like? eg. His hair feels like horse hair. What does his skin taste like? eg. His skin tastes like salt.

3. Idea Four: Just for fun

Organizing thinking IdeasEvery story has :1. character/characters2. Problem3. SolutionWhenever you read anything, draw 3 circles on the board, and ask them who the characters are, what the problem is, and what the solution is.ANDAsk them what happened first, second, third, etc. Draw a chart on the board so they can clearly see the sequence of events. Look at the fun ideas below.1. Idea 1: What would a snowman do at night.Encourage the children to be creative. As a class, think of all the fun things a snowman could do at night time. Discuss as a class, write all ideas down on the board. Translate all ideas into English and write ALL ideas down. Ask for three things: what would a snowman do first, second & third?Encourage students to write their ideas into a story/sentences & give a Title to their story. Get them to draw a picture/s. Display their work, point out really good work, and work with no effort. Commend the students who have put effort into the activity.

2. Idea Two: Characters/ Setting/Main EventThis could be used alone or together with idea one. Get students to identify the main characters from their ideas, where the events take place, and to choose one main event (Event = problem & solution).Teacher should first work with the whole class, get ideas from everyone, write these ideas down on the board to help the children to be creative & confident.

3. Idea Three: Write a sentenceTeacher first reminds students of word order. Then get students to choose words from a word wall/ dictionary/ English book. Using these words, children should try to write a sentence on their own.

4. Idea Four: Sequencing

5. Idea Five: SpringTeacher chooses a season & makes a worksheet like the one below. ___ makes me feel Draw what you like to do in ___. Whats your favourite ____ activity? In _____ I see

6. Idea Six: My favourite Color

PUT ALL THE WORK THAT CHILDREN DO ON DISPLAY ON A WALL. POINT OUT GOOD WORK TO THE CLASS. HAVE SOME EXCELLENT EFFORTS READ TO CLASS BY THE WRITER. MAKE THE CHILDREN FEEL GOOD, CLEVER, FANTASTIC Display Ideas

Students should create evidence in their lessons that show they understand the lessons.Their work should be displayed somewhere for them to see, feel proud of, feel that they have contributed &, so that they can view, compare, discuss, and learn from each other.

POSTER IDEASGet students involved in making posters! Display posters on the walls so students can see their work!1. Make an I can write poster Recipe Poem Words Sentences List Letter Postcard Card Story
