Core plugs
Identification of porosity by helium Porosimeter
Identification of permeability by gas Permeameter
OBJECTIVE
To determine the porosity and permeability of the core plugs
POROSITY
It is defined as the ratio of pore volume to bulk volume of a rock sample.
Porosity is one of the most important rock properties in describing porous media.
The porosity is defined as the capability of a rock to hold fluids in pores.
TRADITIONAL VIEW OF POROSITY IN E&P INDUSTRY 0-5% Negligible
5-10% Poor
10-15% Fair
15-20% Good
20-25% Very Good
PERMEABILITY Permeability of a rock is defined as the ease
with which the fluid can flow. Permeability with one fluid in pore is called
“Absolute permeability” With more then one fluid is called “Effective
permeability” “Relative permeability” is the ratio of
effective permeability and absolute permeability.
It is denoted by ‘K’ Permeability can be calculated by milli
Darcy
TRADITIONAL VIEW OF PERMEABILTY
Poor 1-10 mD
Fair 10-100 mD
Good 100-1000 mD
Excellent >1000 mD
CORE PLUGS & INSTRUMENTS USED
HELIUM POROSIMETER
PROCEDURE TO DETERMINE POROSITY
GAS PERMEAMETER (AUTOMATED)
PROCEDURE TO DETERMINE PERMEABILITY
CORRELATION OF POROSITY AND PERMEABILTY
RESULT
By correlating Porosity and Permeability of the core samples, we get to know the lithology of the formation.
