One of the initiatives to improve the member retention, Malaysia section has been conducting hands-onworkshops for members to apply for their membership elevation to Senior Member. In 2017, the program wascoordinated by Fawnizu Azmadi Hussin, Vice Chair of Malaysia Section who handles the membershipdevelopment portfolio. In order to maximize the impact and opportunity to all members in Malaysia, which is alarge section a series of eight workshops had been planned throughout the country at six locations from northlarge section, a series of eight workshops had been planned throughout the country at six locations from northto south of peninsular Malaysia and two locations in east Malaysia (Sarawak). The workshops also provided a networking opportunities with the members, who are mostly senior engineersand academics in their respective fields. The engagement session provided an excellent avenue for section torecruit more active volunteers and improve membership retention. The members also mentioned two mainreasons why they thought the workshops were useful. First, it gave them the time and opportunity to work onh i li i hi h h ld ’ d h i b f h i b h d l S d h k htheir application which they couldn’t do otherwise because of their busy schedule. Second, the workshop

provided opportunities for them to nominate the three required references.

On 22nd May 2017, The IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter organized a technical seminar on Development of anA t S f V l (ASV) Th t t k l t th U d t R b ti R h L b tAutonomous Surface Vessel (ASV). The event took place at the Underwater Robotics Research Laboratory,School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Engineering Campus, NibongTebal, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. A one day seminar and workshop was delivered by Dr. Zulkifli Zainal Abidinfrom International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Dr. Zulkifli is also one of the current executivecommittee of the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter.

The purpose of the seminar was to share the research finding, challenges and technologies used in thedevelopment of the ASV. The seminar had provided an overview of the general system architecture of ASV,platform development as well as digital signal processing technology used in the system. In the design, theCruzPro™ active transducers were used to provide reliable depth tracking to over 1000 feet. It operated at120 kHz to prevent interference with other nearby depth sounders and fishfinders. Smart transom mountp y ptransducer is also used to provide depth, speed and temperature data to the network. The ASV systemincorporated a mobile surface platform, mobile ground station (on site) and a control room.

The seminar was attended by participants from various agencies including representatives from the industryand postgraduate students. The participants were divided into several groups to allow hands-on learning andin-depth explanation from the research team in each section. During the afternoon session, the demonstrationwas conducted at the lake nearby. The ASVs were deployed to the lake, collect data and the information wastransferred to the mobile ground station.
