As leaders of tomorrow, AIESECers have always taken up development issues that are of
relevance to society. Gender inequality and domestic violence have been among the major
issues that have been affecting the Mauritian society throughout the years.
Any new development framework must prioritise gender equality and women empowerment and
implement social policies and programmes, to promote, child welfare, family welfare as well as
welfare of the community. At the end of 2013, the Mauritian population comprised 636,400 women
compared to 623,500 men.
Women outnumbered men by 12, 900 and lived on average 7 years longer than men. More women
are now occupying higher positions in government services; thus, the proportion of women in the
most senior positions is around 40%; however very few women are on leading positions.
While there has been some progress over the last decade, much more needs to be done. In 2012,
Mauritius ranked 70th out of 146 countries according to the Gender Inequality Index of the United
Nations. The index reflects inequality in achievements between women and men in reproductive
health, empowerment and the labour market. Women continue to face discrimination across
economic, social and political spheres and entrenched gender disparities remain a major driver
of poverty. Each woman and girl experiences discrimination differently, but there are also shared
realities and barriers.
Moreover, on the other side we can see that in Mauritius, the level of victimization rate for sexual offences
is on the rise. Furthermore, it is estimated that 1 over 4 women are or will be victims of domestic violence.
The outcome of these abuses entails women losing faith in them and hence they victimize themselves or
Children losing one parent or both. These persons become pale images of their real self. They are afraid
of giving the best of themselves in whatever they do because there is no one to encourage them and
make them believe that they can have better lives.
As leaders of tomorrow, there is a dire need to install hope in these persons by encouraging them to see
beyond themselves.
The pursuit of women empowerment is applicable to all countries. AIESEC in Mauritius would like to
take up this issue and help the Mauritian society specially the poverty stricken, uneducated
people to overcome this issue and to be able to understand the importance of gender equality for a
better life.

“ iExist – women’s Rights ” is a project for women’s rights dealing both with women empowerment & violence against woman so as to encourage Mauritians to promote equal rights and gender equality for a better social and economic stability. The aim is to raise the awareness on gender inequality present in Mauritius and its consequences on women.
This initiative focuses on how to increase the quality of life and empowerment of these women as well as people. We aim not only to help those victims but the society in general. We want those persons to get out of their shells and make them aware of their competencies so that they can have a better future. And by doing this, we are preventing the victims of today to become offenders of tomorrow. The project has the following aims:
Empower abused woman & injustice against woman with appropriate training and mind-set so that they can effectively engross the quality education, skills and constant motivation that they receive for their future.
Involve members of the Mauritian society to better understand woman’s right and impart the importance of preventing injustice to women in every field through a special and massive sensitization campaign and event.
Develop responsible young woman leaders who will positively impact the society by devising solutions to social problems and encourage a movement of volunteerism where young people give their time and energy.
Campaigns in school so that we can create a new thought and feeling for these women in the heart of students.
At the end of the 8 weeks, it is intended that these women are empowered through 3 different NGOs, are able to learn new skills, can express their abilities and is accepted in the society. Sensitization campaigns to be done to the whole population about their rights and women living with inequalities in Mauritius. Inequalities & violence against women shall be accepted and integrated in the society.

Partner with project stakeholders in the future,
Engage the Mauritian society in Human’s Rights,
Promote cultural diversity,
Activate creative learning curriculums in each NGO,
Will encourage these disable children to learn new skills and express their hidden talent(abilities),
Encourage integration of disable people in the society and our daily life (through outings and events).
Interactive workshops, led by young volunteers from all across the world, will help participants to socialise easier (adapt to surrounding environment) and develop relationships with external environment (volunteers and project team). In the long run we aim the participants to build the confidence of communicating with new people and exploring new environment. By being exposed to foreign cultures, participants will broaden their mind, improve English and have a chance to see the world and meet different cultures without traveling anywhere. Family sessions with successful empowered women will help families to put their future in perspective and therefore ease in the integration as such.

Week 1: Arrival of Interns, induction and opening ceremony
The international participants of the project will be introduced to the local context by the local participants
working on the program and acting as facilitator during the training sessions and events. During this induction
program they will get an overview of the country since they will be staying there for at least 6 weeks.
Week 2: Training given to Interns by resource persons and authorities concerned
There would be a presentation of the Concept Notes to the Interns with a brief overview of their Job
description during the internship. Interns would be obtaining trainings from some resource persons on equality
of women and some authorities according to each special cases present in the institutions where interns
would be working to help them to adapt to the environment and also mark their place in the current society; to
create their identity.
Week 3 - 6: Working with NGOs/campaigns in colleges
Interns would be working as volunteers and also as mentors with the NGOs whereby they will help those
women get out of their shells by encouraging them to take part in various activities which will be proposing.
Moreover the interns will also prepare these women for small shows to perform in our external event. For it is
during the event that these women will show their abilities and our message that we shall not exclude them
from the society/ from us will pass on.
Working at SOS Femme shelter – they will be there to help those women by talking with them,
encouraging them to get out of their trauma.
Atelier de travail - This event will help women seeking help to become economically
independent.
A talk upon women’s rights so as to contribute in changing the thoughts of high school students
and to make them think upon the challenges that these women face in everyday life.
Week 7 – External Awareness Event & Closing ceremony [ Evaluation Report ]

During the Project, various planned & proposed activities and events are considered as follows:
1. External Events - Atelier de travail
I. Display of Handicrafts/ crafts work by women entrepreneur
II. This event will help women seeking help to become economically independent
III. Recreational activities for kids. (Face painting / Drawing competition)
IV. Help in finding sponsors for the women in Shelters
2. Training sessions
Training sessions for the international participants as well as the members of the organizing committee is
important in the sense that not many people are aware of the inequalities of women’s rights as a problem
and they most probably will not know the expectations on them during this project. This will allow the
delivery of a standard correct message throughout the project. The training sessions will be provided by
NGOs who are trying to tackle the problem. This will allow the participants first-hand experience from
people who have the skills and know-how.
3. PowerPoint presentation & Short Film making.
This will consist of preparing the message to be delivered and any data learnt from the training sessions into
power-point slides. This will be carried out by the international participants with support from the
organizing committee. The slides will be presented in awareness campaign may it be in schools or shelters.
This will act as a first approach and trigger thought processes in those students on which the focused task
groups can build on.
The international participants will also be making short film movies from week one to end of project so as to
make a documentary of the process & on-going of the project for future use. These video will also show the
impact that has been made to empower these women and to show to general public their implication into
the society.
4. Awareness Events & Fund Raising.
This event will be organized near the end of the stay of the interns, with close collaboration with the NGOs
which are working to achieve the same goals: creating a safer country for our fellow Mauritians. Interns are
also expected to participate fully in raising of funds such that we make this event a successful one.
5. AIESEC related activities – Global Village.
The Global Village is one huge and very special AIESEC event organized every year by our fellow AIESECers
which serves to bring together several cultures across the world. Interns will be able to enjoy themselves
throughout the whole event while sharing their home cultures in terms of food, traditional clothes, music
and dance among others.

AIESEC Way Many organizations are working
to make a positive impact in our
society, as we do. Each one of
them has its own approach. We
also have our unique way to
make that impact… The AIESEC
Way!
The AIESEC Way is not only a
description of the way (manner)
we aim to make a positive
impact in society, but also
describes the way (road) we are
taking to achieve what we
envision.
