SpringTerm 2 Information Letter – Class 6 Important dates Book week- Week beginning 2 nd March-Wednesday 4 th March-children come to school dressed as a book character. Parents evening Tuesday 10 th March/Thursday 12 th March KS 2 SATs week - Monday 11 th to Friday 15 th May 2015 Thank you for your continued support, it is hard to believe that we are half way through the academic year! We have a busy term ahead, not only with the various activities planned but making sure that year 6 feel fully prepared for their assessments in May. You will have received letters about additional booster sessions being run at Heanor-Gate (for level 6 children) and also the sessions being planned for the level 3-5 children on a Tuesday evening from 3.20pm until 4.30pm (at school) for this term. Also breakfast booster sessions will start on Tuesday 17 th March from 08.00 until 08.50 (breakfast provided).Breakfast boosters have been well received in previous years and are ideal for those children who would like extra support in areas they feel less confident in. All booster sessions will be tailored to your children’s needs. PE this term-Dance activities will be delivered on Monday pm, gymnastics and tag- rugby will be delivered Friday pm. I have been really pleased with the way that some children have continued to read outside of school hours. During the day, we have plenty of opportunities for silent reading/whole class reading and guided reading. Guided reading sessions take place within groups- some weeks whole class guided reading has replaced group guided reading sessions and have focussed the children collaboratively reading ‘source’ material to improve inference and deduction skills. Examples of this; work on the Christmas truce, looking at historical sources in our World War 2 , Geography topic, and more recently, discovering what could have happened to Amelia Earhart. Spellings for the term, especially additional spellings, for group 2 and 3 have been issued and should be placed in their green folders. I have sent texts out to individuals about remembering to learn spellings. During the last term we have covered activities in class that focus on ‘cious’ endings, silent vowels in words, prefixes and suffixes, homophones- their, they’re and there and correct use of a dictionary. This half term we will be looking at hard and soft c and g in words, word roots, contractions and where apostrophes should be placed. Spelling score percentages for Spring 1 and Spring 2 will be issued at the end of this term. Thank you for your support with homework. Following on from written feedback given to the children about their RE books; children are making sure that their RE work is up- to-date for this week. I have posted (on our webpage) a list of areas we have covered, so you can see what has been delivered last half term. Future Friday homework will have a focus on grammar and punctuation, comprehension and any individual outstanding work that has not been completed during the week. For marking purposes and actions from homework to be addressed; Please help to support your child by making sure that their maths homework is handed in on a Monday morning.
