13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – JUNE 27, 2021

“I WILL PRAISE YOU LORD, FOR YOU HAVE RESCUED ME.”

- PSALM 30

Today, in the Gospel of Mark we hear Jesus restoring a young girl to life and healing a woman suffering from

hemorrhages for twelve years. These two events are united in the reality that God blesses with the gifts of health and life.

The cure of the woman is a gift from God for her great faith that Jesus has the ability to both restore her health and

overcome the isolation of her sufferings. Then, the restoration of the life of the little girl reveals the power of Jesus, as the

God of life, to bless and share the gifts of abundant life. We are invited to act upon the words that Jesus shares with the

father of the little girl: “Do not be afraid, just have faith.” Among the gifts that Jesus shares with each of us united in faith

in moments of suffering is the gift of peace. This gift of peace is rooted in the reality that God is merciful and the source of

abundant and total love. The gifts of divine love and mercy strengthens our hearts and graces us with the strength to

praise the Lord who rescues us.

May God – Father, Son, Holy Spirit – abundantly bless your families in these upcoming weeks.

In Christ,

Fr. Ted Prentice, Pastor

INDEPENDENCE DAY, 2021

“We the people” are called to a “more perfect union.” These words, written over 200 years ago

In the preamble to the constitution, were conceived by heroic but flawed men. However, the truth in their words is a seed,

Sprouting through the shell of defect, Growing stronger each day as we respond to hatred with love,

To anger with patience and to distrust with wisdom. 0n this Independence day, we Pray that each of us bears our part

To unite our country into a “more perfect union” by living he truth of God’s message to us:

“Love God with your whole heart, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Mt. 12:30-31)

St. Joseph the Worker Wishes Kathy Harris Goodbye Sunday, June 6th was long-time music director, Kathy Harris’s last day with us. As a gift to her parish family, she sang

some of our favorite songs, including Shubert’s Ave Maria and the Kelly Mooney Version of Leonard Cohen’s Halleluja.

To listen to a recording of these songs, go to our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/stjosephtheworkerpdx/

Carmen Velazquez organized the Hispanic

community to provide food after the 10:30 Mass.

Kathy receives a blessing. Parishioners expressed their gratitude

for her years of service and wished her safe travels and happiness

in her next journey. A journey that seems ordained by God since

her son, Logan had already chosen to attend the University of

Akron, OH when Dustin was transferred to the Ohio branch of

the company he works for.

(Left to right) Frank Gemmato, Carmen Velazquez,

and Rosemary DeLeon select treats from the many

choices set out. The Hispanic community provided

the food as a way to thank Kathy for all the

assistance she has given them over the years.

Fr. Ted poses one last time with Kathy who left for

Ohio on Sunday, June 13. The Harris family will

stay with her parents in Wickliffe, OH until they

can find a home of their own. Thanks to

parishioners’ generous donations to Kathy, she and

her family were able to make the trip back, rent

PODS to move their goods, and prepare their yard

and house for selling without going into debt.

WORDS FROM POPE FRANCIS

"...it is possible to inhabit the world without trampling on it," because inhabiting the earth does not mean "possessing it, but knowing how to live relationships in their fullness: with God, with our brothers and sisters, with creation and with ourselves.” Vatican News, 6/5/21

ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER GARDENS

SECURE HELP FROM THE FRANCISCAN MONTESSORI EARTH SCHOOL

Can war bring peace? Why are people who live in areas where there are not enough resources often targeted as

dangerous people? How does what we do today affect people’s lives in the future?

These are some of the questions the middle-school students at the Franciscan Montessori Earth School (FMES) researched, wrote about,

and presented orally as part of a two-week culminating writing workshop/humanities/community project. Their final focus was on

putting their words into action by contributing to their community which involved spending a couple of hours each day on a service

project. St. Joseph the Worker benefited from this by receiving their much-needed assistance in our gardens and across our campus.

Above: Montessori students spread wood

chips, donated by Honl Tree Care (through

Isaac Brocker) around garden beds. Among

those pictured are Jordan McGrath, Leah

Melvin, David Sharyan, Abongnwi Suh, and

Akongnwi Suh.

Left: Becky and John Fletcher work with a

group of St. Francis girls weeding one of the

St. Vincent De Paul vegetable gardens.

Above: Henry Philipps (left) and Ashe Hardigg

(right) spread chips, defining garden paths, keeping

the weeds down and

smoothing the surface

for easier navigation.

(Left to right) Larissa Bonn, Amelia Johnson, pause in their

weeding to pose for the photo. Math teacher, Kathleen Jahn and her dog, Echo,

chaperone the students while also pitching-in.
