ALERTFraudulent use of stolen bird photographs found on a Peter Wallack facebook page.

James Hager presented an excellent program, Alaska to Zion. His informative talk included maps and images that showed several places and recommended times to find beautiful fall colors. James’ route began in September at Denali National Park, Alaska and ended in November at Zion National Park. The route included the Alaska Highway and Canadian Rockies before diverging on a side trip to Kenya’s Masai Mara and Sambura National Reserve. Returning from Africa, the autumn trip concluded in southern Utah with red maples and box elders in Zion National Park.

James offered, in addition, a mid-September and October option for a varied color palette of red maples and box elders found in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, particularly along the Alpine Loop. Information from the program is available at JamesHagerPhoto.com/talks.

A Photographer’s Backup ProcessBy Neal Fedora

A s a photographer, a great deal of time and hard work goes into taking and editing photographs. Corruption or loss of your photos can be devastating, causing lost memories or income. It is not uncommon for

photographers to not be adequately protected from these unexpected events. Thus, it’s essential to have a backup process that complements your workflow and ensures that your important pictures and files are secure from loss or corruption.

There are numerous backup products and services available, however, I desired to implement a backup process that integrates into my workflow, is cost effective and provides comprehensive protection of my photographs and files. Researching other photographers’ backup processes and recommended best practices, one process found from the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) could be manipulated to address my prerequisites. During the research, the one consistent recommendation was that a backup process with at least three layers of protection is required, in addition to offsite storage. The most common instantiation of this is:

• 2 External Hard Drives• 1 Disc copy (DVD or Blu-Ray)

With the three layer backup protection hardware infrastructure implemented, how do you make it work in practice? I have a Windows 7 laptop, one network drive and one USB drive. Since I typically travel with my laptop, I can’t schedule a regular backup. So, I require software that permits me to manually schedule backups to both hard drives. ASMP recommended SyncBack for Windows and ChronoSync for Mac users. However, I prefer the easy to use free software SyncToy from Microsoft, which was recommended to me by travel photographer, Tom Bourdon. ChronoSync is operationally similar to SyncToy, so the backup concepts presented herein are synonymous for Windows and Mac users.

Using SyncToy, I create folder pairs to backup specific folders from my laptop to the target external hard drives. Folder pairs, set as ‘echo’, are used to generate exact copies of my laptop folders on the external hard drives. This is used for my Working folder, which contains my plethora of images to be edited, and specific folders from my laptop Users folder. In addition, a ‘contribute’ folder pair, which only appends files, is used to copy my laptop Transferred folder to an archive folder on the external drives. The Transferred folder contains finished images that are archived to DVD(s) before removal from my laptop, thus continually maintaining three layers of protection. Presently for offsite storage, the archived DVD(s) are stored in a local fireproof safe; however a safety deposit box or online storage is very effective for addressing this requirement. Figure 1 depicts SyncToy and the folder pairs utilized either individually or all at once.

Technique and Tips by MHWPC Members...

In addition to regularly backing up your pictures and files, it is encouraged to also back up your System Image should an Operating System (OS) failure occur. The entire backup process implemented is shown in Figure 2.

Equally important is having a process for backing up your images in the field and verifying the integrity of your images years in the future. On travel, I use a 160GB HyperDrive COLORSPACE UDMA for backing up my Compact Flash cards. A simple MD5 hash generator/checker, such as MD5 Checksum Verifier utility from FlashPlayerPro ($15), can be used to generate hash files when you archive your images that can be used for future comparison to determine if file corruption occurred.

It is so vital to have a comprehensive backup process. With a couple external hard drives, DVDs and some free software, you can easily have a reliable, simple backup solution that effectively protects your precious photos and files.
