SAINT THOMAS BECKET (1118-1170) December 29 To anyone who imagines conflict between religion and politics to be a modern phenomenon, history wit-nesses otherwise. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More declared, “I die the king’s good servant,

but God’s first!” Thomas Becket could have said the same four centuries earlier. As Henry II’s closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the king presumed, could be counted on, if made archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conversion, confirmed by the ordination liturgy’s rich sym-bolism of the bishop as Good Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ. Renouncing secular responsibilities,

distributing his wealth to the poor, Thomas became the church’s uncompromising champion. Faced with this “new” Becket, the king’s previous friendship turned into a ferocious, almost irrational hatred. As eight centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at the altar of Christ’s sacrifice, Becket was slain before the altar

of Canterbury Cathedral by royal agents, neither the first nor last good shepherd to lay down his life as the price of freedom for Christ’s church and justice for Christ’s sheep.

SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE

This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the first Sunday after Christmas Day. To-day’s feast celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving signifi-

cance into the daily rhythms of our human family life. The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph took to protect his young

SANTO TOMÁS BECKET (1118-1170) 29 de diciembre Tomás Becket se distinguió por su inteligencia y rápido ascenso durante el reinado de Enrique II de Inglaterra. Como canciller, en ausencia del rey, estuvo al mando del reino. No obstante, Enrique II era

ambicioso y quería a la Iglesia bajo su dominio, fue por eso que le nombró como Arzobispo de Canterbury en 1162. Sin embargo, Tomás cambió radicalmente: renunció a la cancillería, vendió su mansión, dio el dinero a

los pobres y se fue a un monasterio viviendo humildemente. Se opuso públicamente al rey y a sus intenciones de sometimiento de la Iglesia hasta que el mismo rey lo amenazó con la muerte,

razón por la que se expatrió a Francia. Luego de una reconciliación temporal, el rey expresó su deseo de librarse del arzobispo y envió a una guardia real a que lo asesinaran, hecho que ocurrió en el altar mayor de la catedral mientras Tomás Becket celebraba la Eucaristía. Sus últimas palabras fueron: “Acepto la muerte

SALVACIÓN EN LA VIDA DIARIA Este domingo es la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia que cae en el primer domingo después del Día de

Navidad. La fiesta de hoy celebra cómo la humanidad de Jesús (incluso toda su familia) ha dado significado salvífico a los quehaceres diarios de nuestra propia vida familiar.

Las lecturas ofrecen instrucción y aliento sobre cómo compartir –dentro de nuestras familias, en la familia de la parroquia y en la más amplia familia humana– el amor que Dios comparte con nosotros en Jesús.

Selecciones de Eclesiástico, del salmo 128 (127), y colosenses nos alientan a ser reflejo del amor divino y así encontrar la santidad en todas nuestras relaciones humanas. La lectura del Evangelio según Mateo

ofrece un ejemplo vivo de amor en las medidas que José tomó para proteger a su joven familia del peligro y para que creciera dentro de la gran familia de fe de su época.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La tradición mexicana de las Posadas se

acompaña de las tradicionales piñatas. Aunque hay piñatas de animales y caricaturas, la piñata original

es una estrella con siete picos. La piñata llegó al continente con los misioneros agustinos procedentes de España, mismos que la habían recibido de italianos; y éstos, a su vez, la

obtuvieron de Marco Polo quien conoció decoraciones de animales coloridos en China. El

asociar la piñata con las Posadas viene de la cultura Náhuatl quienes celebraban a Huitzilopochtli (dios de

la guerra) del 17 al 26 de diciembre. Estos ponían cazuelas de barro decoradas con listones y plumas sobre palos en el templo. Al romperlas, tesoros y

alhajas caían a los pies de su dios. Los misioneros mezclaron las dos costumbres

para la catequesis. La estrella de siete picos representa al diablo y los 7 pecados capitales,

mientras que la venda en los ojos es la fe en Cristo. El acto de pegarle a la piñata son nuestros esfuerzos cristianos a pesar de las desorientaciones que trae

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, the first Christmas carols are heard in the home, but usually not yet in church. What is a “carol”

anyway? Originally, a carol was any kind of communal song sung at a festival such as a harvest. By the

thirteenth century or so, carols were associated with household celebrations. “Carol” comes from the Old

French carula, meaning a circular dance. Carols weren’t

for church, since the language of liturgy was Latin and the carols were in the common language. Their

characteristic sound comes from medieval chord patterns, and they often have strong refrains for everyone to sing. Even in the churches of the

Reformation, carols didn’t make it into church services until the 1870s or so, since there was a preference for psalms. Anglicans resisted popular carols; most of our beloved carols came via the Methodists, an offshoot of the Church of England. The Catholic Church generally didn’t admit carols to liturgy either, but we didn’t make

laws against them. We are told that the beloved carol “Silent Night”

comes from Catholic Austria and a harried parish music director. Joseph Mohr, the priest of St. Nicholas in

Oberndorf, had written the words in 1816, but offered them to his music director, Franz Gruber, when the

church’s organ broke. Mohr asked him to write a melody that could be played on guitar as a prelude to Mass. Gruber finished the tune just hours before midnight Mass in 1818. The people were shocked to hear a

guitar in church, but were charmed by the sweet lullaby. The church was swept away by a flood in the 1990s and the village later relocated, but the townspeople have set up the “Silent Night Memorial Chapel” at the site. Today the carol is in print in some three hundred languages. How wonderful that the pipe organ broke on that night!
