29 papers on the conference theme were presented in the conference. Outgoing IFSSO President Teruyuki Komatsupresented a paper entitled “Exchange Students between Japan and the United States” while Kazuhisa Nishihara of IFSSO-Japan read a paper on “Foreign Residents and the Great East Japan Earthquake.”

IFSSO President Teruyuki Komatsu delivered the OpeningRemarks. He shared his thoughts on Japan’s recent experienceconcerning the Fukushima tsunami and nuclear disaster and relatedthis with the conference theme on Human Security. On theother hand, Dr. Michael Kuhn, President of the World SocialSciences and Humanities Network (World SSH Net), gave theKeynote Address entitled “Beyond the Reflexive Borders of theWestern World’s Social Science System.” In his speech, Dr. Kuhnchallenged the hegemonic role of Western social sciences andcalled for a more multi-versalist social sciences.

Five papers were selected as the best conference papersand their authors were awarded the SMI-IFSSO Prize forthe Social Sciences. The recipients of the Prize were ChesterCabalza (“Deconstructing Human Security in the Philippines),Ludovic Kibora (“Vulnerability of Peri-Urban Populations

The next IFSSO General Conference will be held in 2013.New Delhi, India and Istanbul, Turkey are being consideredas possible venues of the next conference.

University of the Philippines (CSSP-UP); and• Risale-i Nur Institute.

The organizations that had been accepted as AssociateMembers are the Anthropological Studies, Inc. (Anthropos),the Association of Social Science Educators, Researchers, andTrainers, Inc. (ASSERT), and the College of Social Sciencesand Philosophy of the University of the Philippines (CSSP-UP), all from the Philippines, and the Risale-i Nur Instituteof Turkey.

Those who were accepted as individual members are AdjiKrisbandono, Amor Bonus Sande, Daisy Alburo, Elvis Patulin,Eric Claudio, Evelyn Rabino, Francis Kayodo Ashipaoloye,Helen Vilbar, Hermawan Kusumartono, James Loreto Piscos,

Membership to IFSSO is still open to all social scienceorganizations and institutions as well as to individual socialscientists and researchers. The IFSSO membership form maybe downloaded from the IFSSO website at www.ifsso.netand submitted to the IFSSO Secretariat.

The General Assembly elected the following membersof the IFSSO Executive Board:

The term of the new Executive Board is from December2011 until November 2013.

Dr. Castro was previously IFSSO Secretary General. Heis also the Chair for Anthropology and Linguistics of theNational Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) andChair of the Department of Anthropology of the Universityof the Philippines. Meanwhile, Former IFSSO PresidentTeruyuki Komatsu has been elevated as a member of theIFSSO Advisory Council.
