Customer Profile

IGATE is a global leader in providing integrated technology and operations-based solutions, headquartered in Bridgewater, New Jersey. As a trusted partner to corporations in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, IGATE provides solutions to clients’ business challenges by leveraging its technology and process capabilities, underwritten by an understanding of domain and industry imperatives. With revenues over US $1.2 billion, and a global employee talent capital of over 33,484, we offer productized applications and platforms that provide the necessary competitive and innovation edge to clients across industries, through a combination of speed, agility, and imagination.

As a leading technology and business process service provider, IGATE is a long-time user of VMware products. “Partners like VMware help us implement and integrate our services and deliver the best possible outcome for our customers,” says Mr. Vijay Kumar Srivastava, Associate Director-IMS at IGATE.

One of the most important projects, in which VMware is working with IGATE, is to deliver a VMware Center of Excellence (CoE) laboratory in Bangalore. The laboratory enables customers to experience demonstrations and proofs of concept of IGATE infrastructure management services based on VMware technologies.

“The CoE enables us to show customers how we can provide better services, the technologies we use, and how we implement them,” explains Mr. Srivastava.

“We provide a platform to fine-tune new solutions to meet customer requirements and best practices, including enabling customers to see how the solutions would perform in their environments.”

To efficiently develop and deliver services for its large European and United States-based customers, IGATE decided to implement its own private cloud. The company would leverage the cloud, based on a foundation of VMware software, to deliver Infrastructure-as-a-service comprising compute, storage, and networking resources. It would also enable the rapid, inexpensive delivery of proofs of concept for customers. The cloud model would enable IGATE to create a portal for its developers to access virtual machines to create new products.

Having forged a close relationship with VMware and experienced the agility, performance, and flexibility that the vendor’s virtualization products could deliver, IGATE opted to base its cloud on the VMware vCloud Suite. The company formalized its decision after the VMware account team conducted a successful proof of concept for IGATE’s Infrastructure Management Services team in the IGATE laboratories. This proof of concept was established for IGATE’s satisfaction that VMware vCloud Suite would enable it to deliver complete application environments on top of its existing VMware infrastructure, and provide automation and management capabilities to support software development lifecycles.

“Nearly all of our customers have made an investment in and have expertise in VMware,” says Mr. Srivastava. “We wanted to use what they were using so they

IGATE needed to implement a private cloud to accelerate the delivery of new products and services to the market and to provide an environment for customers to view proofs of concept and testing. The business turned to the VMware vCloud Suite to provide the management, automation, and orchestration required for the private cloud, which resides in IGATE’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) laboratory.

wouldn’t have to invest in new skills or resources, or add to their existing VMware investments.” The VMware vCloud Suite also enables IGATE to develop customized solutions for customers that span multiple platforms and technologies. The vCloud Suite-powered private cloud has been running in the IGATE VMware CoE since late 2014.

The vCloud Suite incorporates a range of features and functions to help IGATE maximize the efficiency of its VMware CoE. The vRealize Operations provides cloud monitoring and management capabilities, vRealize Business enables cost management, and vRealize Automation automates the delivery of IT services. “We were particularly happy with the predictive analytics these products provided. I could see what utilization would look like if I added or removed some virtual machines from the cloud,” comments Mr. Srivastava. The business can also quickly identify the root cause of any infrastructure issues and address them fast and holistically.

VMware’s vCloud Suite has enabled IGATE to adopt a self-service model where its developers can provision their own infrastructure resources, while administrators retain the ability to control the overall capacity utilization and predict what capacity will be required in future. Self-service is enabling the business to greatly speed it’s time to market. Rather than waiting for weeks or months for IT to make server resources available, a developer can access a virtual machine and become productive in minutes. On the management side, IGATE now operates a single console that enables it to automate the end-to-end delivery of resources, move workloads between different platforms and technologies, and allocate resources to users as necessary. While IGATE has no plans yet to implement a chargeback model for infrastructure resources, VMware’s technologies can help the business understand what resources are being consumed and by whom, and to determine how much to spend on infrastructure in future.

VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager enables IGATE to minimize the disaster risk to its business by compromising its VMware-powered private cloud. Having a solid DR plan is core to any business continuity and one of the most

complicated IT process is to fall back on the DR Site or plan for an emergency. This process includes lots of steps and human intervention. Eliminating or reducing human intervention can increase the DR effectiveness by 30 to 40 percent. IGATE has leveraged SRM and vRealize to automate the DR process to just a few clicks and minimal intervention.

IGATE is also extending its commitment to deliver the private cloud from a fully automated and orchestrated, policy-driven software-defined datacenter. The company has deployed VMware NSX to control the networking component of its datacenter and treat it as a pool of transport capacity.

IGATE’s VMware private cloud services have attracted considerable interest from customers and prospects. “When we are talking to prospects, we can be confident that we have the skills in executing a private cloud model and they can see that we have proven our capabilities,” says Mr. Srivastava. “It definitely gives them more of an inclination to use our offerings.” IGATE is reviewing how the project can be extended into a hybrid cloud model that integrates applications and services across private and public clouds. This change is due to be finalized in the second half of 2015. “VMware will play a key role here because we can use its technologies to perform a lot of customization and automation to enable this hybrid cloud model,” adds Mr. Srivastava.

Based on its expertise and experience, IGATE is recommending many of its customers to start the journey towards a VMware-enabled software-defined datacenter. “One of the main reasons that our customers would find a software-defined datacenter ideal is that it allows them to move towards commodity hardware and become more vendor-agnostic,” Mr. Srivastava says. “And based on the testing we have undertaken, they can also achieve operational efficiencies in areas such as compute, storage, and backup of up to 40 percent.”

Overall, IGATE is extremely happy with its relationship with VMware and the vendor’s contribution to its business. “We share a good, close partnership with VMware where we help each other strengthen our product and service capabilities,” concludes Mr. Srivastava.

“ When we are talking to prospects, we can be confident that we have the skills in executing a private cloud model and they can see that we have proven our capabilities. It definitely gives them more of an inclination to use our offerings.”
