2014REPORT

Page 2: iHelp Project Report 2014

Last year marked our 10th anniversary and it was a

reflection of the increased challenges facing us and

the growing support for our work that we embarked on

opening new offices in France and Australia.

With your continuing generosity and backing we now

have offices in Birmingham and London in the UK,

Pakistan, Bangladesh, Jordan, Sudan, Tanzania and

Yemen to co-ordinate the work carried out by our teams

and partners across the world.

During the last 12 months, that work has included our

continuing efforts to provide the essentials of life for

Syrian refugees who are now encamped in Jordan,

Lebanon and Turkey - thousands that have fled Syria

have been provided with food, water, clothing and

medicines.

We also delivered emergency aid to large swathes of the

Philippines’ population whose homes were destroyed

in Typhoon Haiyan, and to the refugees of the Central

African Republic forced to flee because of ethnic and

religious violence tearing apart their nation.

There were emergency aid deliveries to flood victims

in Pakistan and Yemen, and allied to this aspect of our

work were the long term programmes aimed at tackling

poverty and deprivation, and bringing hope and

opportunity to vulnerable communities.

We embarked on our Al Nashaji Project to build a 100-

home complex in the Philippines, our Eco Village in

Tanzania opened its doors to the first of the 160 orphans

who will eventually be housed there and our Smiles

Better campaign received international attention with

our #EndAcidViolence social media campaign.

These are a few highlights of our work in the last year

- it is only with the generous support of our donors,

partners and volunteers that we have completed our

first decade of Reaching People in Need. For that

support and for helping us get this far, we offer our

humble thanks and pray that you continue to support us

for the next decade and beyond.

Among the many Syrian refugees

helped by our donors was 12 year-old

Rahaf Hussain.

She had congenital heart disease and was in urgent

need of heart surgery. We moved her and her mother,

Um Hamza, from the Zataari refugee camp to the

Queen Alia Heart Institute in the Jordanian capital

Amman where surgeons carried out several operations,

including attaching a prosthetic valve to her heart.

Initially, the procedure was said to have been a success

but Rahaf developed complications and three weeks

after admission, she passed away. Rahaf is a symbol of

the thousands of Syrian refugees who still need urgent

medical care and attention. Our prayers are for Rahaf,

may she find peace, and may Allah (swt) grant her

family patience and comfort.6

With our Al Najashi project, at least 100 permanent houses will be constructed on the island of Aklan.

A community centre will be built and some properties

will be repaired to make them habitable for homeless

families.

The community centre will be an access point for the

community providing facilities for prayer, education,

teaching and livelihood resources.

Work on Al Najashi started in early 2014; the

contractor is employing local villagers. Many lost their

livelihoods as a result of Haiyan and their employment

ensures they have a livelihood during construction of

the homes.

ECO VILLAGEIn 2012, we started work on our pioneering Eco

Village in Tanzania to support 160 orphans and

vulnerable children and establish a legacy of

sustainability and development. The village also

includes the Eco Mosque, sports facilities, a

community centre, library, training centre and a

permaculture farm.

An opening ceremony in August 2013 marked the

completion of the first of the 16 homes, at which

the former President of Tanzania, Al Haj Ally Hassan

Mwinyi, was the guest of honour. Ten vulnerable

youngsters and their ‘parent’, a full-time professional

carer have moved into the first home and the

children have started attending a local school.

The Eco-Village that Islamic Help is

building just outside Dar es Salam is

an innovative and ground breaking

project that will provide security and

stability to the most vulnerable in our

society. This is an exciting venture

and I applaud Islamic Help for its

foresight and vision. Insha’Allah it

will be a model village for others to

emulate.Al Haj Ally Hassan Mwinyi Former President of Tanzania,

The permaculture farm at the Eco Village has created jobs for local

people who have been trained to adopt permaculture practices and

continuously regenerate and conserve the biodiversity of the area.

It includes vegetable gardens, livestock rearing, beehives, seasonal

crops and a pond featuring fish and ducks.

To date, the farm has produced duck and chicken eggs; yielded

aubergines, okra, chillies, tomatoes, cabbage, spinach, passion fruit,

jack fruit and bananas and will by next year begin to produce honey.

The produce grown on the farm not only provides the residents of

the Eco Village with food but will also generate further income to

ensure sustainability. As well as local residents, Islamic Help Tanzania

has so far trained more than 80 individuals from neighbouring

communities and government agencies in permaculture practices.

TREES FOR CHANGEAs part our commitment to environmental

sustainability in Tanzania, we launched Trees for

Change to combat climate change and to contribute

to reforestation. We aim to plant 1 million trees in

the next few years as a tool to tackle the causes of

poverty and as a means of improving the quality of

lives for people living on the land.

As well as the environmental benefits, Trees for

Change will give local communities the skills

and knowledge to establish plant nurseries for

livelihoods, learn agricultural techniques and

improve soil quality and the purity of water

sources.

The Eco Village tree nursery has to date yielded 70,000 trees.

More than 1,300 have been planted in the Eco Village.

WORLD RECORD BIDWe have embarked on one of most ambitious projects ever in

Tanzania – planting the most trees planted in one hour, a feat that

will earn us a place among the Guinness World Records title-holders.

The current record (set in April 2012) is 40,885 trees planted by 100

people in one hour.

The attempt will be staged at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, where the

biggest impact of global warming is felt and where the largest carbon

footprint is created largely by tourism. The bid and Trees for Change

has been supported by local community stakeholders including

multi-faith and government agencies who attended a special

workshop at Moshi with Islamic Help.

The first phase of Trees for Change includes:

• Asustainableenvironmentalregeneration

SMILESBETTEROur Smiles Better programme continued to bring hope and opportunity to survivors of acid attacks.

DR MOHAMMAD ALI JAWAD, the

internationally renowned plastic and

reconstructive surgeon, continued his

collaboration with us by carrying out surgeries

for survivors in Pakistan, while Saving Face, the

Oscar-winning documentary featuring our work

with acid attack survivors, picked up two Emmy

Awards.

SINCE 1999, THERE HAVE BEEN

3,512 REPORTED CASES OF ACID

ATTACKS WORLDWIDE. MOST

CASES GO UNREPORTED.

Our Smiles Better programme provides

rehabilitation, corrective surgery, medical

support and livelihood opportunities for

survivors.

DR MOHAMMAD ALI JAWAD was

honoured with a special award at our

Decade of Difference anniversary dinner in

Birmingham.

AN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN, #EndAcidViolence, launched

by Islamic Help attracted international attention, with

supporters posting the message written on their hands on

social media platforms across the world.

AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL IN LAHORE,

16 PATIENTS from the Punjab region were

prepared for surgery later in the year.

IN KARACHI, 18 SURGERIES were carried out

at the Holy Family Hospital on patients from

across the city.

IN ADDITION, 10 PATIENTS INCLUDING 3

HINDU WOMEN FROM THE SINDH region

were checked and listed for future surgery.

In the first half of 2014, Dr

Mohammad Ali Jawad and

his team carried out two

LIVELIHOODS

Livelihood n A means of securing the necessities of lifeOxford English Dictionary

Islamic Help has long recognised that giving

people the opportunity to establish livelihoods

is the key to helping them escape poverty.

With the means to earn their own income,

people are empowered, they become self-

sufficient and do not have to rely on others.

In Balakot, Pakistan, we have established

livelihood opportunities for sponsored orphan

families by linking up with the Skill Development

Centre. Twenty-five mothers/guardians from

sponsored orphan families who are interested

in getting sewing or embroidery skills have

enrolled in this centre. After training and gaining

new skills, they can generate income at a village

level or get help to develop further.

I am very happy with Islamic Help’s support

and concerns. I pray to God for all those who

put their effort on this, as now my status will

change, I hope. May they be able to do the

same for others and God bless them, their

families and all those who contributed. I will

put all my efforts into making the project

sustainable to help my grandchildren.

From business projects to grants and

micro-finance based on the Islamic

principle of zero interest, we are helping

communities to learnnewskills and boost

their communities.

MISSION POSSIBLEMission Possible is our flagship volunteering

programme, giving volunteers the full spectrum

of the humanitarian aid process from planning,

campaigning and fundraising to delivering aid

directly during an overseas deployment.

It gives young people the chance to meet like-

minded individuals and see first-hand exactly how

much difference the money they have raised can

make to the lives of others.

During their deployment, the volunteers are involved in various projects including:

Supporting schools and orphanages

Livelihood projects

Community awareness

Water projects

Environmentally sustainable schemes

Health programmes

DURING THEIR DEPLOYMENT

TO PANGANI, TANZANIA, IN

FEBRUARY 2014, the Mission Possible

team concentrated on water and livelihood

projects. As part of this the volunteers:

Gave out 45 energy efficient stoves

and 15 solar boxes

Delivered 144 goats, and 54 bee

boxes

Planted more than 1,000 trees

Built 11 rainwater harvesting systems

- each providing 15,000 litres of

water per year

The work took place in three villages and

means more than 5,000 people will benefit.

“WE GOT TO REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THESE PEOPLE BY PROVIDING THEM WITH A LONG TERM

SOLUTION TO THE POVERTY THEY SUFFER FROM. WE CAN ALL PLAY OUR PART IN SOME WAY OR ANOTHER

AND THAT IN ITSELF, IS PRETTY AMAZING. ”

The volunteers filed blogs from the

Mission describing their experiences and

emotions, from making new friends to

breaking down in tears after having to turn

away potential beneficiaries.

38

Page 21: iHelp Project Report 2014

VOLUNTEERSVolunteers are the backbone of Islamic Help.

The charity started with a group of young people

determined to make a difference and that driving

force has helped us deliver vital aid and help to

millions of people during the last decade.

Last year, our volunteers continued to show their

dedication and enthusiasm by taking on charity

challenges, fundraising, organising events and

taking part in overseas deployments to deliver aid

directly, a life-changing experience for those who

met Syrian refugees at camps in Turkey and Jordan.

EGYPTIAN-BORN YOSSRA KHALIFA

spent her childhood years in Bosnia before moving to Birmingham,

where she studied art and design at college and university and

worked in the retail sector.

Already a keen member of the Scouts movement – she is the

national development manager for the Muslim Scouts Fellowship –

she started volunteering with Islamic Help last year.

“Growing up in a household full of charity work has made it a dream for me to follow in the

footsteps of my father and work within the charity sector. Alhamdulillah, everyone has been

more than welcoming and I have already had an amazing life-changing experience when I

went with the IH team on deployment to Turkey to distribute aid to the Syrian refugees there.”

DECADE OF DIFFERENCE

On 22nd November, the event was

commemorated with a special Decade

of Difference dinner at the London

Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square.

Held in conjunction with the Global

Peace and Unity (GPU) event, it featured

special performances by nasheed artists

Zain Bhikha and Saif Adam, as well

as promoting our Trees for Change

campaign.

In 2014, we staged another anniversary dinner in

Birmingham, the city where we started and which is

home to our headquarters.

2013 MARKED OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY

On Sunday 27th April, 2014, we hosted our Birmingham anniversary dinner to mark our Decade of Difference.

The night featured special performances from

Saif Adam and Silk Road and a speech by Shaykh

Aslam. The night was in aid of our Smiles Better

campaign, to help survivors of acid attacks,

with world-renowned plastic surgery consultant

Mohammad Ali Jawad as our guest of honour.

The night also featured a series of special awards

to honour supporters who had played a significant

part in our development over the decade.

ATTOCK CRICKET CLUB

We’re proud to continue our sponsorship

of Attock Cricket Club, a Birmingham-

based club that provides sports and cricket

coaching facilities for young people. The

club celebrated a successful year with several

of their teams being promoted or winning

trophies.

FOOD HAMPERS: In December 2013, working with the Balsall Heath Forum, we delivered 250

food packs containing non-perishable essentials to elderly and vulnerable residents in Balsall

Heath, Birmingham.

ACORNS HOSPICE: Staff and volunteers bought

and distributed Eid gifts and presents ranging

EVENTS

Throughout the year, staff

and volunteers organise

and participate in events to

fundraise for Islamic Help’s

causes.

From staging fundraising dinners to climbing Mt Kilimanjaro,

from walking a few miles during Ramadan to running the

Athens Classic Marathon, from our 10th anniversary Decade

of Difference dinner to meeting the US ambassador - our

staff and volunteers are always busy.

It’s their commitment and hard work that has allowed us to

meet the challenges of the last decade and prepare for the

journey to come.

Please tick if you do not wish your donation to be gift aided

I would like Islamic Help to treat this donation, all donations I have made in the last four years

prior to this and all donations I make from the date of this declaration until I notify Islamic Help

otherwise, as Gift Aid donations. I understand that I must pay or will pay an amount of Income

Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6th April to 5th April) at least equal to the

amount of tax that all the charities and CASCs I donate to, will reclaim on my gifts for that tax

year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand

the charity will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I have given.
