Student Spotlight!
Congratulations to Jaycey Ressler who
won 1st Place in the Milford Young Women’s
Club 2017 Youth Creative Writing Contest!
How my homework flew away!
One sunny day, mommy and I were outside on the balcony during our usual school vacation trip to
Florida. Mom said, “Jaycey, you need to do your homework.” “You’re right,” I said. Mom went in to go
get it and then I sat down to do it. I finished 4 story problems and then I started to get a little bit hungry.
I went to get some grapes and a cool smoothie and left the completed page on the table outside.
I continued working on the rest of my homework worksheets when something unusual
happened…..whoosh …….whoosh… a gust of wind burst into our space and carried away my home-
work! “Ahhh!!” I screeched! Mom immediately got out of her seat and ran around the whole balcony
leaping to catch it. I was laughing so hard, I almost cried tears of joy! She reminded me of my silly dog
jumping up for a treat.
Up, up, over the railing the worksheet went! Like a soaring kite swaying on a windy day. It was
gone. We decided to take the elevator down to the lobby and go exploring outside in hopes of finding my
homework. Up, down, and all around we searched desperately, but sadly we returned to the elevator
without my missing page. I couldn’t stop thinking about it all vacation long. I was wondering where that
paper ended up. I wondered if another kid found it. For the rest of my vacation, every time I went out-
side I hoped it would fly back to me.
When I got back home, I hopped onto the bus excited to see all my friends and return to school.
We all shared stories of the fun things we did during our school vacation. I impatiently rushed off the bus
to get into the building when something unusual happened… whoosh.. whoosh…. a gust of wind blew a
wrinkled piece of paper right into my face, it was my lost homework sheet and I was so relieved!
I happily returned to my classroom and gave it to my teacher along with a great big smile. She said
“welcome back!” and I laughed and said “Time flies and so does my homework!”

Dear Milford Families, Research shows that most students lose 2-3 months of grade level math equivalency over the summer. Summer review and practice will help ensure our students retain the academic skills acquired this year and are ready to advance their learning at the start of the new school year. For our students entering grades 1 & 2, we have created a Summer Math Activity packet that will provide extra practice with the math skills your child has learned and will continue to use in the coming school year. For our students entering grades 3 through 6, we are offering families a choice:
● Option 1: Khan Academy - An online personal learning resource that offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a learning dashboard that empowers children to study at their own pace.
● Option 2: Download and print a summer activity packet The purpose of these Summer Math Activities is to ensure that our students are engaged in meaningful work that will reinforce important skills that are needed for the upcoming school year. An hour a week is all it takes for your child to strengthen his/her math skills, and prepare for the year ahead. Please go to our summer math site: https://sites.google.com/a/milforded.org/mps-summer-math to find more information about Khan Academy and/or to download the summer activity packet for your child. If you do not have home access to the internet, you can have free use of computers and the internet in the Milford Public Library. If you are unable to gain internet access, please contact your child’s teacher to pick up a summer math packet by June 14th. Let’s say goodbye to summer learning loss! Sincerely, The MPS Math Department
