Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong (IIMS) was established in the year 2007 by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, with the objective of offering world class management education and research in the country. The vision is to become an internationally recognized management Institute with a global outlook grounded in Indian values. Over the years, IIM Shillong has made great strides towards fulfilling its vision. The Institute is recognized as one of the premier management institutes in India. As we move forward, our emphasis is to create young, vibrant and dedicated managers and thought leaders, intellectually and emotionally competent to meet the challenges of the organization, both at national and international level.

Keeping the above objective in mind, IIM Shillong and the Ocean University of China (OUC) have joined hands to design the first ever Sino-India 14 months full time Executive Post Graduate Program (PGPEx) for executives to gain first-hand knowledge of two emerging economies. PGPEx is an International Program open to all students from across the globe. The programme is designed for young executives across areas and geographies. The objective of this programme is to provide the students with an understanding of the corporate business practices and equipping them with necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude for decision making in a complex business environment. The first batch of PGPEx Program commenced on 15th June 2012 and the program was successfully completed on 30th April 2013.

After more than three decades’ development, China has grown into a hot land of multinational investors, a paradise of trading-up consumers, a pivotal international financial and logistical hub, a powerful global cross-border e-commerce platform and a big FDI capital provider. The inauguration of the Belt and Road Forum has echoed with great enthusiasm from international community, promising new momentum to world economic growth. As the initiator, China, the second largest economy in the world, is opening endless possibilities in regional and global economic cooperation, leading the partnering countries toward resurging economic prosperity.

Studying China and experiencing China is definitely a practical way to develop an international vision, to enrich professional knowledge and skills and to pave the way for a future career. Delicately designed, the serial lectures, featuring Chinese economic dynamics, Chinese business acumen, MNCs marketing strategies in China, and Chinese culture and language, presents a panorama of Chinese economy and society. The 10-week full-time internship with select enterprises in China provides genuine on-the-job training experiences. We are very pleased to see this cohort of participants highly motivated and devoted to the lectures and internship activities. We are very impressed with their high profiles, professional capabilities and high morale.

We sincerely hope this flagship project in China-India higher education cooperation will incubate more Indian business elites and sow seeds of friendship and partnership between our two countries.

Dear Recruiter,

Greetings from IIM Shillong!

Located at an average altitude of 1496 metres above the mean Sea level, Shillong is nestled in the Khasi Hills, covered by the green cornucopia and the dreamy clouds. Shillong, a city full of life and a place to be, is the capital city of Meghalaya – “the abode of clouds”.

It is one of the leading education hubs in the North East with many schools and colleges specked in the picturesque settings. The city has beats and rhythms in everything: the church bells, the choirs, the rock bands and music flows in every nook and corner.

Surrounded by the hills, the city is in the vicinity of many beautiful tourist spots: Shillong Peak, the Elephant Falls, and the Ward’s Lake. The rains and mist in the air add to the charm of the place. As many have rightly quoted the places in and around Shillong, reminded many of the rolling greens of the Scottish highlands –

thus it is also known as “Scotland of the East”. The human eyes’ thirst for beauty can be quenched by the scenic surroundings of Shillong. The full glory of Nature can be seen in the forests, lakes and waterfalls that are present in the region. For the adventure seeking souls there are challenging trekking routes in Smit Valley or the David Scott’s trail. Just near to it are Cherrapunji which offers many more places to sooth one’s eyes with Nature’s beauty. In Shillong, the hills keep reckoning the heart with its charm and so it’s best to keep your cameras and back packs ready!

And for conventional tourists, Shillong offers no less! The Elephant falls, Wards lake, Shillong Peak, Capt. Williamson Sangma State Museum, Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian, Sweet Falls and Don Bosco Centre are a few notable tourist spots in and around the city. Be it the “Sacred Groves” of Mawphlang, the engineering marvels of the “Living Root Bridges” or the resplendent Nohkalikai Falls, every place is a cynosure for the eyes.

The Students of PGPEx programme of IIM Shillong are being invited to the prestigious Shanghai Forum 2017, and all 30 students of PGPEx 2016-17 batch participated the Forum during 26th to 28th May 2017 at Shanghai. Shanghai Forum 2017 is Co-hosted by Fudan University and Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, undertaken by Fudan Development Institute (FDDI). Shanghai Forum endeavours to build an interactive platform for multi-sided communication amongst academic, political, commercial, and press circles through which significant problems both in Asia and the world will be discussed comprehensively and profoundly.

Students of IIM Shillong experienced International flavours as the Forum is one of the best known confluence of great thinkers, celebrated academicians, policy makers and research scholars from all over the world. The intellectual exchange which had contributions by great minds like Dr. Rana Mittar (Department of Politics and International Relations, Oxford University) and Dr. Richard Bush(Director, Center for NorthEast Asian Policy Studies (CNAPS) of the Brookings Institution), proved very helpful for the PGPEX participants as it gave them a holistic perspective on what the political analysts thought of the present dynamics of power between the East and the West. In his address to the participants on the day of the closing event of the Fudan curriculum, Prof. Ni Shixiong, (Director, Shanghai Shixiong International Relation Communication Center) reminisced about his first meeting with the “batch of 30 budding managers”, on 18th October, 2016, the day when the PGPEx16-17 programme was flagged off. He shared his vision of inclusive growth and strengthening of cross cultural harmony, which could be realized by new age thinking and fresh ideas. The takeaway from the Fudan-Shanghai module was so enriching and exemplary, that it was inarguably the best conclusion of the international immersion that the participants could dream of before they headed for their internship programme. It can be said, that the Fudan module was the highlighting factor of the international immersion and holds an extremely critical position for the participants as it helped them gain an insight of how an emerging economy like China was conducting itself on the global front and treading forward to take the lead.

IIM Shillong PGPExStudents attended the

The Students of PGPEx Programme of IIM Shillong visited the Prestigious School of Management, Fudan University during the month of May 2017. Being a global financial hub, Shanghai is a sanctuary for aspiring managers and business enthusiasts. It elucidated the real scenario of China's business strategies which was so far restricted to text books, journals and subjected to the author's perception. The “Fudan module” constituted sessions on the current geopolitical and economic situation pertaining to China with respect to the developed as well as emerging economies. The lectures, delivered by renowned professors and government officials, were focussed on how China perceives transnational business and the values it believes in, that influence its relations with other countries. In a special lecture conducted by Prof. Shen Dingli, Associate Dean (Fudan University's Institute of International Studies), participants were given an insight of China's recovery from the state of great political and socio-economic turmoil to become the 2nd largest economy of the world. Apart from classroom sessions, the participants were given opportunities to attend major conferences which contributed further to gain exposure to the nitty gritties of China's foreign and domestic policies. A visit to The Consulate of India, Shanghai, was one such opportunity where the participants were invited to attend a session conducted by The Consul General, Hon. Mr. Prakash Gupta. In his address to the participants, Mr. Gupta shared a clear picture of China's strategy of maintaining market dominance by exploring consumerism and gradual penetration into Indian markets through diversification of goods and services aimed at the mentality of an average Indian consumer.

The Industry Academia Conclave focuses on the amalgamation of real time business practices, academic explorations and cross cultural collaborations. It exudes the essence of a “proposed engagement” with a focus on liberal ideas and cohesive intellect that will bind cultures together.

The conclave aims to provide a platform, to some of the great minds of the nation, to share their experiences and engage in exchange of ideas to motivate aspiring management professionals, thereby equipping them to guide the nation through the vicissitudes of the global economy.

We aim to nurture the experiences shared by these business leaders and academicians to gain an insight on “how” our policy makers and corporate houses, formulate their macro and micro -economic policies in the context of emerging world order.

We at IIM Shillong believe in “sustainable development and inclusive growth” vis-a-vis industrial prowess for making a “better tomorrow” for generations to come.

The PGPEX program was conceived with the intent of formulating a distinctive curriculum, to facilitate potential aspirants for managing business in d i f fe rent geographies , soc io-economic environments and cultural domains. The program has been making a difference by stirring novel ideas and providing newer dimensions to “global” business relationships. The conclave is just an extension of the same to encourage a “confluence of collaborative ideas” with an intent to translate them into reality.

It is said, that the road to salvation, is in the art of finding joy for others. The feeling of supreme bliss, is in the realization of the fact that “We Care”. Upholding this spirit of “caring and sharing”, the participants of PGPEX-16 organised a visit to the Missionaries of

Charity at Laitumkhrah in Shillong on February 19, 2017 to spend an afternoon of fun and frolic with the children, who have found their homes in this benevolent institution. Being part of activities driven towards a charitable cause, has always been a tradition of IIM Shillong. Awareness of one’s social responsibilities, serves as a cornerstone of virtue on which, the PGPEX programme is founded. Therefore, we, the participants of PGPEX-16, consider it as a mission that we whole heartedly believe in and work towards.

It was a great show of team work when all of us came together to plan an afternoon with these special children. The process in itself can be considered as a hue of the science of management, which involved arranging transport, making goodie-bags for the children and planning out games – remarkable to note that all this was done with a sense of a common cause where victory laid in the triumph of joy. Seeing the children jumping and skipping around happily, with their new found IIM friends, was an achievement, which we will never be able to quantify. Amazing to observe that in such a less time, the children had become so attached, that they didn’t want us to leave - a manifestation of the purity of heart at its best, which is so difficult to find in today’s competitive world.

As the current batch of PGPEx, we feel very contented, to be able to make the WeCare initiative, a success. As the programme moves towards its culmination, one of things that we would like to pass on as legacy for the batches to come and as an inspiration for others, is the onus of taking forward, such a noble cause! After all, we believe, that the joy of success resides not only on what one achieves for oneself but also in spreading the warmth of one’s achievement for the development of others.
