It’s a tough time in the campus—the farewell time. With lots of sweet memories and priceless experience gained during last 4 years, the gradu-ating class of 2013 is all set to embrace the new journey life.

Amidst all these farewell parties and parting songs, the only place to find solace is our workshop. We promise to give an ultimate satisfaction of watching the car taking its final shape surround-ed by spilled oil, scattered wires, nut-bolts and heavy metal.

The competition is only 5 weeks away and the team is nervous as well as excited to become a part of a history as this will be IIT Roorkee’s first ever participation in the UK competition.

The early morning of 15 April saw the first run of the car in pure electric mode. Everything went well and the car silently moved continuously for about 2 kms. The second run was done in last week of May and it was even more happening with car being pushed to its limit of acceleration.

IIT Roorkee Motorsports is recipient of FS Award 2013

We are delighted to share with you all that the team IIT Roorkee Motorsports has been selected for FS Award 2013. This award is given to those teams who show ex-traordinary potential of creating a sustainable learning environment and utilising Formula Student for a larger benefit of the students, institute and the entire engineer-ing community. It gives us immense pleasure to mention that two of our 3rd year team members - Mr. Rahul Yadav from Mechanical and Mr. Rahul Jangid from Electri-cal Engineering would be joining General Motors Technical Center India Pvt. Ltd. During the two month internship, both will work on hybrid power-trains. This is the first ever association of any kind between our team and General Motors India and we hope to strengthen this relationship in the years to come.

The team was lucky to host Mr. Pankaj Mithal (EGM, Electrification, Vehicle Systems, GM Tech-nical Center India) in our workshop. On 23 April, Mr. Mithal visited our workshop and had a good 2 hour interaction with the team where we explained him the project as well as the design of our car. He discussed various aspects of hybrids and answered the students queries. It was a wonderful experience for the students.

Generator

Generator rating is decided on basis of the combined power requirements for the charging of battery and veh icle run.

The engine generator set will be connected to motor controller through a control unit to stabilize the voltage of the

engine generator set by setting the speed of rotation of the engine shaft.

Whenever the battery SOC will fall below a critical limit, the engine generator unit will be turned on, delivering a constant amount of power. A part of this power will be taken up by the motor controller for the purpose of running the motor and the rest will be utilized for the charging of battery module. The engine generator will turn off once the battery SOC crosses a particular value

Vehicle Control System (VCS)

A VCS monitoring the state of each of the individual powertrain components and responding to the actions or the commands from the driver is also required. This controller should generate control signals for turning the engine on/off, the ultra-capacitor module, charging of the battery, etc. The controller should also be able to modify the con-trol strategy during the course of driving for the maximum efficiency of the car. VCS would be implemented on FPGA to accomplish the following tasks.

When the vehicle is turned ON, the battery powers the motor with ultra-capacitor module providing the neces-sary boosts required during rapid acceleration. The motor is coupled with the differential which drives the wheel shafts to move the vehicle forward.

During deceleration (braking) Regenerative Braking (RB) feature comes into action, in which the electric motor behaves as a generator and the mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy to recharges the battery.

As soon as the battery charge falls below a predefined value, the engine is turned on which drives the genera-tor. Energy generated by this engine-generator unit is used to power the prime-mover and the Battery. Once the battery is charged to a certain level, the engine generator set is turned off.

Different control strategies are employed during the different modes of operation i.e. Acceleration, Braking, Cruising.

For a team to achieve its goal, it is very important that all of its members perform to the best of their potential. Making a hybrid car from scratch and then taking it at the international level is not an easy task and an enormous input is required in terms of money, mind and matter. We students have been giving our best to fulfill the need of mind but to arrange the matter, we do not have sufficient money.

This is an effort to create a history in IIT Roorkee. At this stage, we invite you to become an active part of this grand project by including your name among those who supported and nurtured the project during the real times of needs. All your contributions will go a long way in enabling the team to participate in the competition. It would be an honor for us to recognize you as our team members as below:

B E C O M E A S P O N S O R ! ! ! IIT Roorkee Motorsports is a group of enthusiastic engineering students from IIT Roorkee who are involved in design and devel-opment of a prototype Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle for the international competition Formula Student 2013. We have raised sufficient funds to build the car and take it to UK and now we need to raise funds for team travelling.

We request you to associate with our team and project as a sponsor. In return of your monetary or in-kind support, we offer attractive sponsorship benefits. Following slots are available for association:
