    oR oPEnERS

The Fighting Illini (2-0) look to continue their hot start

on Saturday when they head to the Windy City to host No.

19/23 Washington at Soldier Field for Chicago Homecoming

(5 p.m. CT, BTN). A win would make Illinois 3-0 for only the

when the Illini started the season 6-0.

Saturdays game against Washington will be Illinois first in the city of Chicago since the 48-27 victory overNorthwestern at Wrigley Field on Nov. 20, 2010. It also will mark the Illinis second-ever game at Soldier Field. The first was against Washington State on Sept. 1, 1994, a 10-9 victory for the Cougars.

Following Saturdays shellacking of Cincinnati, the Illini are receiving votes in both polls for the first time since

Oct. 24, 2011. Illinois sits 34th in the AP poll (nine votes) and 39th in the coaches poll (three votes).

The University of Illinois and Chicago Bears have a long-standing tradition dating back to the original Decatu

Staleys, who were founded by University of Illinois alums George Halas and Dutch Sternaman. Some of the highlights

    are below:

Orange & Blue: The Chicago Bears team colors have always been orange and blue, after those of the University of

Illinois, the alma mater of founder George Papa Bear Halas.

Dk bukus: The greatest linebacker in the history of the game. Butkus joined the Bears as a first-round draft

pick in 1965 after an All-American career at Illinois. Butkus went on to earn All-Pro honors seven times and is a

member of the Pro and College Football Halls of Fame. Jersey number 50 retired at Illinois, 51 retired by the Bears

    Bears Hall of Fame member.

Red gre: Illinois All-American was first major signing by Halas and the fledgling National Football League

Halas took Grange and the Bears on a coast-to-coast barnstorming tour in which the club played 16 games in

nine weeks. The tour is generally credited with saving the professional game and putting the NFL on the nationasports map. Grange is a charter member of the Pro and College Football Halls of Fame. Jersey number 77 retired at

Illinois and by the Bears. Also coached for the Bears for eight seasons from 1933-40. Bears Hall of Fame member

gere hs: Chicago Bears founder, player and long-time coach, earned a B.S. degree at Illinois in 1918 while

lettering in football, basketball and baseball. A charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Bears Hal

of Fame member, Halas selected orange and blue as the teams colors as a nod to his alma mater. Halas passed

away in Oct. 1983, and starting in 1984 the Bears added the initials GSH to the left sleeve of their jerseys in hono

of the late Papa Bear. The Bears uniforms still don the initials to this day.

1985: The Chicago Bears spent a week in Champaign-Urbana practicing for Super Bowl XX. The Bears used the

Memorial Stadium Bubble to prepare for the New England Patriots, whom the Bears defeated 46-10 in New Orleans

1994: Illinois opened the 1994 season at Soldier Field with a 10-9 loss to Washington State on Sept. 1. Simeon Rice

set an Illini single-game record with five quarterback sacks.

2002: The Chicago Bears played all of their home games (eight regular season and two exhibition games) at

Memorial Stadium on the University Illinois campus during the 2002 season while Soldier Field was being renovat-

ed. The Bears also played their two 2003 home preseason games at Memorial Stadium while the finishing toucheswere put on the Soldier Field renovation.

mer Sdu: The Chicago architecture firm of Holabird & Roche built Memorial Stadium, as well as Soldie

Field, also named in honor of those killed in World War I.

    illinoiS VS. RanKED oPPonEntS

Illinois faces its first top-25 opponent of the season on Saturday as Washington is ranked No. 19 in this weeksAssociated Press poll and No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Four future opponents are ranked in this weeks poll No. 4 Ohio State, No. 17 Northwestern, No. 20 Wisconsinand No. 23 Nebraska.

The Illini have lost five straight and 14 of their last 15 against ranked foes since beating No. 1 Ohio State 28-21on Nov. 10, 2007. The lone win during that span came on Sept. 17, 2011, over No. 22/18 Arizona State, 17-14,at Memorial Stadium.

Last season, Illinois faced just two opponents ranked in the AP poll at the time of the game, falling to No. 25Michigan, 45-0, and No. 6 Ohio State, 52-22.

Illinois coach Tim Beckman is 0-6 against ranked opponents in his four-plus years as a head coach.

Like many Illini teams over the years, the 2013 Illini defense is led by its linebacking corps. This year, senior

J brw, a 2012 Butkus Award semifinalist, and sophomore ms me, a 2012 Freshman All-

American key the attack. Brown has piled up 190 tackles, 30 TFLs and 9.0 sacks over the last two-plus seasons,

while Monheim became the first true-freshman ever to lead the Illini in tackles and led all Big Ten freshmen with

86 stops last season. Not surprisingly, the duo is leading the team in tackles so far this season as Brown has a

Big Ten-best 23 stops, while Monheim is second on the team and third in the Big Ten with 18.

Illinois history at the linebacker position is up there with any program in the nation. It begins with football legend

Ry nske, who donned the Orange and Blue from 1955-57, and the greatest linebacker in football history, Dk

bukus, who was a two-time All-American and led the Fighting Illini to a 1964 Rose Bowl win over Washington. The

Orange and Blue boast two Butkus Award winners, D hwrd in 1994 and Kev hrdy in 1995, and severa

    first-team All-Americans like Drrk brww (1990), Se Re (1994 & 95) and J le (2007), in addi-

tion to Butkus, Howard and Hardy and recent NFL Draft picks like Dy crk, mrez Ws and ne bussey

    WhoSE hoUSE? SchEEl-hoUSE

Senior quarterback n Seese threw for a career-high 416 yards in the season-opener, the 10th-bestsingle-game passing performance in school history the fifth-most ever by an Illinois quarterback at MemoriaStadium.

Scheelhaase followed that up with 312 yards and tied his career-high with four TD passes against Cincinnati, marking the first time he has passed for 300 yards in back-to-back games in his career. The last Illinois quar-terback to have consecutive 300-yard passing games was Juice Williams at Michigan (310, 10/4/2008) and vsMinnesota (462, 10/11/2008).

Scheelhaase already has surpassed his 2012 season totals for touchdown passes, 30-plus-yard pass plays and50+ pass plays. Take a look at his two-game 2013 numbers versus his 10-game 2012 numbers below:

    2013 2 54 73 728 74.0 6 1 364.0 6 3 182.10

Scheelhaase jumped two spots into fifth place on the Illinois career list with 40 career touchdowns, passing TonyEason (38) and Jon Beutjer (39). He also holds the No. 4 spot in career total offense at Illinois with 7,816 yards, isfourth in career passing efficiency (129.3), sixth in passing yardage (6,024), sixth in completions (542), seventhin attempts (878) and 18th in rushing yardage (1,792) second among quarterbacks at Illinois.

In the third quarter against Cincinnati, Illinois matched its longest drive in school history, covering 99 yards on12 plays over 5:07. It marked the fifth time since 1971 the Illini have recorded a 99-yard drive, and the first sinceOct. 21, 2009, against Michigan. The Illini also had a 94-yard TD drive (seven plays in 1:15) and an 88-yard TDdrive (7 plays in 3:16) in the season opener against SIU.

The Illini scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win over Cincinnati on Sept. 7, the highest-scoringfourth quarter of the Tim Beckman era. It also marked Illinois highest-scoring final period since the Orange andBlue posted 21 points to grab a 38-35 win over Northwestern on Oct. 1, 2011.

Illinois has shown a great ability to sustain drives early in the season. Through two games, the Illini have fourdrives of 10-plus plays, all of which ended with scores and resulted in a total of 20 points. Last year, Illinois

managed only 11 scoring drives of 10 or more plays. The Illini racked up 522 yards of total offense against the Bearcats, marking the first time they surpassed 500

yards in a game since Oct. 8, 2011, at Indiana. They notched 210 yards on the ground, marking their first timeover 200 rushing yards since Sept. 8, 2012, at Arizona State.

With 42 points against SIU and 45 against Cincinnati to open the season, Illinois registered 40-plus points inback-to-back games for the first time since 2010 when they topped Purdue 44-10 on Oct. 30 and fell to Michigan67-65 on Nov. 6.

The Illini had six scrimmage plays go for 30+ yards against the Salukis, equaling the teams total for the entire

2012 season in one game. Only Oregon (7) had more plays of 30+ yards in week one. The Illini added one more

30-plus play from scrimmage against Cincinnati and now rank 14th nationally with seven.

Illinois offense has been amazingly balanced, as 11 different players caught a pass, seven players recorded acarry and six players scored a touchdown against Cincinnati. The 11 players with at least one reception againstCincinnati equals the most since 11 players caught at least one pass against Purdue on Oct. 30, 2010. TheIllini are one of three teams in the nation to have four receivers with 100-plus yards on the season, along with

Louisville and California. Sophomore running back Js erus posted his first career 100-yard receiving game with 103 yards on four

catches against SIU, highlighted by a career-long 53-yard touchdown reception, the first TD catch of his career. He had three big plays against the Salukis with a 53-yard touchdown reception on a screen pass, a 26-yardreception and a 34-yard run. He followed that up with a 48-yard TD reception against Cincinnati in week two. In2012, Ferguson led all Big Ten freshmen in all-purpose yards per game (90.7).

Senior wide receiver Ry lkrd notched a career-high 115 receiving yards in the season opener, marking hissecond career 100-yard receiving game. Against Cincinnati, Lankford did his damage on the ground, rushing for46 yards on three carries, including a darting 29-yard TD run, the first of his career, on an end-around.

Freshman quarterback ar bey barreled into the end zone from two yards out in the third quarter againstSouthern Illinois for his first career touchdown. He also converted a first down with a four-yard carry on third-and-one on the final play of the first quarter, his first play as an Illini. Through two games, Bailey has five touchesthat have resulted in three first downs and one touchdown.

Senior Seve hu played wide receiver for the first time in his career in the season opener against SIU, haulingin two catches for 64 yards. He then had three catches for 53 yards, including a 22-yard TD reception, the firstof his career, against the Bearcats. Hull spent his redshirt season as a receiver before switching to safety priorto the 2010 season and making 15 starts there from 2010-2012.

The starters on the Illini offensive line are massive, as all five are listed at at least 300 pounds and have anaverage weight of 309 pounds (Cvijanovic - 310, Heitz - 305, Hill - 315, Karras - 300, Lewis - 315).

The line didnt allow a sack against Cincinnati, marking the first time in 13 games that an Illini opponent didntrecord one. The last time UI protected that well was against Western Michigan on Sept. 1, 2012.

Last years leading rusher Dv Yu struggled in the opener with just six yards on eight carries, butbounced back with a team-high 64 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries (4.6 ypc) against Cincinnati. In 2012Young led a balanced ground attack with 571 yards on 121 carries (4.4 ypc), including three touchdowns, and ledthe team with 38 receptions for 172 yards and another TD in 2012. The junior from Texas has 1,092 yards careerrushing yards.

Davis wasMr. Versatility in 2012, lining up at tight end, receiver and running back throughout the season.

Illinois snuffed out two fourth-down attempts by Cincinnati, meaning the Illini have held opponents 0-for-3 onfourth down this year. UI is one of 25 teams in FBS yet to allow a fourth-down conversion and one of only eight tostay perfect in three or more attempts.

The defense returned only four starters from 2012: DE t Kyrd, LB J brw, LB ms me and

    safety Eres ts iii.

The entire defensive three-deep includes only two seniors (LB J brw and DL t Kyrd). In fact, thethree-deep lists only nine players with junior or senior eligibility, the same as the number of true-freshmen listedAnd two of those upperclassmen are junior college transfers who had never played a down of Division I footbaluntil last week (DL ae cjuse and DB Ze Pey).

Senior t Kyrd forced his first career fumble against SIU, while junior hus bes jumped on it for hithird career fumble recovery.

As expected, senior LB J brw is leading the Fighting Illini and the Big Ten with 23 tackles, a total that

ranks 14th nationally through week two. Over the last two years, Brown has put up monster numbers when healthy

He was leading the Illini with 59 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 2012 before having his season cut

short by a shoulder injury. That followed a breakout 2011 season, when he earned All-Big Ten honors with 108

tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. He ranked sixth in the nation in TFLs per game (1.63) and led the Big

Ten in TFLs per game during conference play (2.07). Brown is a member of preseason watch lists for the Butkus

Award, Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy.

Sophomore LB ms me has 18 tackles, 2.5 TFLs and a sack in 2013, a solid start after a stellar freshman

season that saw him earn second-team freshman All-America honors by Phil Steele. Monheim started the fina

10 games of the season and led all Big Ten freshmen with 86 tackles. Monheim ranked 15th in the conference in

tackles per game (7.2), while no other B1G freshman was in the top 50. He was the first Illini true-freshman ever

to lead the team in tackles.

Senior safety Eres ts iii ranks third on the team with 16 tackles in 2013 after a breakout 2012 wherehe was fourth on the team with 69 tackles and ranked fourth in the Big Ten with three forced fumbles. He is one

of only two upperclassmen in the secondary listed on the depth chart, and the only other junior is Zane Petty, ajunior college transfer in his first season of Division I football.

Redshirt-freshman safety tyr br notched his first career interception in the Cincinnati game in his secondcareer start. He also added seven tackles in the Illini victory.

Vae beeys 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown against Southern Illinois was the longest by a singleplayer in school history and equaled the longest touchdown in Illinois history. It matched the record set by TravisWilliams and Eugene Wilson, who combined for 100 yards on a lateral play, against Purdue on Oct. 12, 2002. Italso marked Illinois first kick return TD since A.J. Jenkins (96 yards) against Indiana on Oct. 18, 2008.

Senior WR mes ose recorded a career-best 38-yard punt return in the fourth quarter against Cincinnati, markingthe Illinis longest punt return since 2004. He also now has 55 punt return yards on the season, marking Illinoismost since Arrelious Benn had 114 punt return yards in 2008.

Illinois has streaks of 51 games and 144 attempts without missing a PAT. The last time the Fighting Illini did noconvert a PAT kick was on Sept. 5, 2009, against Missouri.

Junior punter Jus DuVers, a 2013 Ray Guy Award candidate, is averaging 40.3 yards per kick thus far in

2013. In 2012, DuVernois averaged 41.9 yards per punt, fourth-best in the conference and 3.6 yards per kick bette

than 2011. As a team, Illinois led the Big Ten and ranked 23rd nationally in net punting in 2012, averaging 39.2

    yards per kick.

Sophomore kicker tyr Zewsk has started off 2013 by hitting 3-of-4 field goals and 10-of-10 extra points. In2012, he nailed a 54-yard field goal against Purdue, the third-longest field goal in school history and the longesin the Big Ten in 2012. Zalewski also handles kickoff duties, booting 10 touchbacks in 16 kickoffs this seasonand averaging 64.8 yards per kickoff as 15 of his 16 kickoffs have reached the end zone.

Senior t Russe converted his third career two-point conversion (second passing) with a toss to TE MattLaCosse in the second quarter against SIU. His other two conversions came at Ohio State in 2012 (one rush, onepass).

In 2012, Vae beey blocked a goal attempt against Penn State, marking the first blocked FG for an Illin

since Derek Walker at Michigan on Oct. 4, 2008, and the first blocked kick of any kind for an Illini since Clay Nurseswatted away a PAT at Fresno State on Dec. 3, 2010.

With the loss of three-year long-snapper Zak Pedersen to graduation at the end of 2012, the Illini turned to redshirt-freshman Z hr for long-snapping duties this season. Hirth was ranked the No. 2 long-snapper in thenation by ESPNU coming out of high school. He handled his duties in the opener against SIU without any issues

The Aug. 31 win over Southern Illinois was the Illinis 16th consecutive home-opening victory, the fourth-longesstreak in the Big Ten behind Ohio State (35), Nebraska (28) and Wisconsin (18). Illinois is 86-33-5 all-time inhome-openers.

The Illini are 13-0 all-time against FCS opponents (formerly I-AA). All but two of those wins have been by at least21 points. Four of UIs 13 FCS wins have come against Southern Illinois, including the only two that were closegames, a 28-25 win over the Salukies in 1985 and this years 42-34 season-opening victory.
