THe GAme: The Washington football team kicks off the 2014 season, their first under new head coach Chris Petersen, Saturday, Aug. 30, when the Huskies travel to Aloha Stadium in Honolulu to face Hawaii. The Huskies finished last season 9-4 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-12, capping the season with a win over BYU in the Fight Hunger Bowl. Washington enters this season ranked No. 25 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the Amway Coaches Poll. Saturdays game at Hawaii will kick off at 4:30 p.m. Hawaii Time/7:30 p.m. Pacific Time and will air live on CBS College Sports as well as the Washington IMG Radio Network, with new flagship KOMO AM-1000 and FM 97.7. Coach Petersen, who boasts the best winning percentage among active NCAA Division I-FBS coaches at 92-12, came to Montlake after eight seasons at Boise State, where he won five conference titles and led his Broncos to a pair of unbeaten seasons capped by Fiesta Bowl victories. After the trip to the Islands, Washington returns home for four consecutive Saturdays. The Huskies will play host to Eastern Washington, Illinois and Georgia State before opening Pac-12 Conference play Sept. 27 vs. Stanford.

SEASON OpENERS: Washington is 84-34-6 all-time in season openers, good for a mark of .690. Since 1989, Washington has posted an 14-10 record in season openers 9-1 at home, 5-8 on the road, 0-1 neutral site. Last year, Washington beat Boise State, 38-6, in the UWs return to newly renovated Husky Stadium. In 2012, the Huskies beat San Diego State, 21-12, at CenturyLink Field. In 2011, the Huskies beat defending NCAA Division I FCS Champion Eastern Washington, 30-27, for the UWs first season-opening win since 2007. In the 24-season span dating back to 1989, the Huskies have opened vs. a ranked team 11 times: vs. No. 15 Stanford in 1993 (W, 31-14), at No. 17 USC in 1994 (L, 24-17), at No. 20 Arizona State in 1996 (L, 45-42), vs. No. 19 BYU in 1997 (W, 42-20) at No. 8 Arizona State in 1998 (W, 42-38), vs. No. 11 Michigan in 2001 (W, 23-18), at No. 12 Michigan in 2002 (L, 31-29), at No. 2 Ohio State in 2003 (L, 28-9), at No. 21 Oregon in 2008 (L, 44-10), vs. No. 11 LSU in 2009 (L, 31-23) and vs. No. 19 Boise State in 2013 (W, 38-6).

THE HEAd cOAcH: Chris Petersen, who has built a reputation as an of-fensive innovator who carried the Boise State football program to its high-est highs, was finally swayed to take on a new challenge when he agreed to become head coach of the Huskies in December of 2013. Petersen, 49, the only two-time winner of the Paul Bear Bryant Award (2006 and 2009), compiled an exceptional 92-12 record in his eight seasons as Boise State head coach (2006-2013), including two unbeaten seasons (13-0 in 2006 and 14-0 in 2009) and two BCS bowl berths. He won five conference titles and posted a 57-6 record in conference play (WAC from 2006-10 and Mountain West from 2011-13). Petersen, who also won the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award in 2010, led the Broncos to 10 or more wins in seven of his eight seasons and to 12 or more in four straight (2008-11). In 2006, Petersens first season in charge in Boise, he led the Broncos to their first undefeated sea-son since 1958, when the school was a junior college. The 2006 season was capped by a 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, a game remembered by many as one of the greatest in bowl-game history. That Boise team ended the year ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press top 25 poll. The following season, the Broncos went 10-3 and finished out of the polls for what would be the only time in Petersens first seven seasons. The 2008 squad went 12-1 and ranked No. 11 in the final top 25, finishing the regular season undefeated. In 2009, Petersen led the Broncos to their second unde-feated campaign and another Fiesta Bowl berth. Boise State beat TCU, 17-10, in Arizona, becoming the first team from a non-BCS conference ever to win two BCS bowl games. The 09 Broncos checked in at No. 4 in the final AP poll. The 2010 season ended with a 12-1 record, a No. 9 final ranking and a win in the Las Vegas Bowl, the first of three straight trips to Vegas for Boise State. In 2011, BSU once again went 12-1, finishing with a No. 8 final ranking. Last season, Petersens team went 11-2 and beat Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl, good for a No. 18 final ranking. In 2013, Boise State, which faced Washington in the first game at the newly renovated Husky Stadium, finished the regular season with an 8-4 record (Petersen came to the UW prior to the Broncos bowl game). Throughout his teams unmatched on-field suc-cess, Petersen also saw his Broncos succeed in the classroom. In 2011, Boise State was the only school to finish in the top 10 in both major polls and also receive a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the second of three straight such awards for the program. Boise States APR was second in the nation in 2011 and 2012 and Petersen was recognized in 2012 for having the best APR for the two previous years among all FBS coaches. Known for his work with quarterbacks, Petersen tutored Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky and Kellen Moore at Boise State. Moore set an NCAA record with 50 career wins as a starting QB while winning three conference player of the year awards. Moore was the only player ever to record four 3,000-yard seasons in both passing and total offense. His 142 passing touchdowns were second-most in NCAA history while his 14,667 career passing yards were fifth-most. He twice led the nation in passing efficiency and set an NCAA record for season intercep-tion percentage, throwing just three in 431 attempts in 2009. During his eight seasons seasons, 51 Broncos earned all-conference honors. Before taking over as head coach at Boise State, Petersen served as the Broncos offensive coordinator from 2001-05, during which his teams averaged 41.3 points per game, leading the nation in scoring in both 2002 and 2003. Petersen began his coaching career in 1987 as freshman coach at his alma mater, UC Davis. In 1989, he became the Aggies varsity wide receivers coach. In 1992, Petersen moved to Pittsburgh, where he was quarterbacks coach. That season, Alex Van Pelt passes for more than 3,100 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 1993, Pe-tersen moved back west to take over a QBs coach at Portland State, helping the Vikings to Division II playoff berths in each of his two seasons. In 1995, he took a job at Oregon as the receivers coach under Mike Bellotti, a position he held before moving to Boise as offensive coordinator in 2001. Born in Yuba City, Calif., on Oct. 13, 1964, Petersen graduated from Yuba City High in 1983 and went on to play quarterback at Sacramento City College. From there, he transferred to UC Davis, earning a bachelors degree in psychology in 1988. He

later earned a masters in educational psychology from Davis. At Davis, he set numerous school records, including the single-season standards for passing efficiency, completions, completion percentage, touchdown passes and total offense as well as the career mark for completion percentage. He still remains in the top 10 in Aggies history in numerous season and career categories and his season and career completion percentage records still stand. In 1986, Petersen was named the Northern California Athletic Conference Player of the Year and earned UC Davis Colby E. Slater Award as the schools Male Athlete of the Year. He was also a captain and won the teams Jerry Norris Award (Most Valuable and Inspirational). He was inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Petersen and his wife, Barbara, are parents of two sons, Jack and Sam.

pETERSEN TOpS LIST: The 2014 NCAA record book lists the top active FBS coaches in terms of winning percentage (minimum five years at FBS) and the Huskies own Chris Petersen tops this list. Peterens .885 career winning per-centage entering the season was No. 3 in the country for all NCAA levels behind only Lance Leipold of Wisconsin-Whitewater (.940) and Chuck Martin (.914), who is in his first season at Miami (Ohio) having compiled his entire W-L record at Grand Valley State. Here are the top 10 FBS coaches by career winning percentage, at the start of the 2014 season:

PeTeRSeNS FIRST FIVe: The NCAA Record Book also notes that Petersen won more games in his first season as a head coach (13-0 in 2006) than any coach in history and that his win percentage over his first five seasons (61-5) was fifth-best in history, ahead of the likes of Knute Rockne and Bud Wilkin-son and behind coaching legends like Gil Dobie and Walter Camp. Here are the 10-best coaching performances over the first five years of a career:

cOAcHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board for 2014, the Husky coaching staff obviously includes mostly new faces. In fact, of the nine full-time coaches on the 2014 staff, six worked for Chris Petersen last year at Boise State. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersens staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the last four as coordi-nator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked at his alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate head coach and offensive line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13 season coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was with Petersen seven of eight seasons. Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersens Broncos staff during Petersens entire eight seasons, though he started as director of operations. Hes coached running backs the last five years at BSU. Assistant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory comes to Washington having spent the last four seasons at Boise State. He was the defensive coordinator at California from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also having coached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference at Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in sev-eral top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days, was quar-terbacks coach at Boise State the last two seasons. Previously an offensive coordinator at Montana, he takes that role (along with QBs) at Washington. Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same

position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersens DBs coach in Boise the last two years, having spent five seasons in the NFL before that. Wide receivers coach Brent Pease worked at BSU under Petersen for his first six seasons as head coach. The former standout quarterback at Montana, Pease returned to the Northwest after having coached at Florida the last two seasons. Defensive line coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Choate has a similar recent history as he worked under Petersen from 2006 through 2011 before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in 2013. Among the nine full-time assistants, the only returner from the 2013 season is tight ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in 2013 after having worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he was also in charge of tight ends. The UW staff for four grad assistants in 2014 includes one returner and three newcomers. The returner is former UW and NFL wideout DAndre Goodwin, whos back for his second year. Hes joined by Ben Thienes, Joshua Taufalele and Gerald Alexander. Thienes was a GA at Boise State last season while Alexander was a standout DB at Boise State before playing in the NFL for five years. Taufalele is new to both UW and Pe-tersen. The former offensive lineman at New Mexico most recently coached at Foothill College in California.

HUSKIES vs. WARRIORS HISTORY: Washington and Hawai'i have played only four times in the two teams' histories in the 1938 Pineapple Bowl (sometimes also referred to as the Poi Bowl), in a regular-season game in Seattle in 1973, in Honolulu in 2007 and in 2011 at Husky Stadium. The '37 Huskies had finished the regular season 5-2-2 and 4-2-2 in the PCC. The team had stored all its gear for the off-season when an invitation to play came from the University of Hawai'i. Coach Jimmy Phelan polled the team, received unanimous approval, and set off by ship from Vancouver, B.C., for a week-long voyage, during which the team practiced on deck. The UW took the lead early on as Jimmy Johnston ran 15 yards around left end before lateralling to center Bud Erickson, who went 32 more yards for a touchdown. Johnston then hit Merle Miller on a 35-yard score, then set up two other TDs with a 69-yard punt return and a 30-yard run to the Hawai'i one. The Huskies led 26-0 before the home team notched a first down. The Huskies' second unit posted two more long scores (a 41-yard run from Everett Austin and a 50-yard play on a ball lateralled from Joe Dubsky to Rich Worthington) in the second quarter for a 39-0 halftime lead. Lloyd Phelps (53 yards) and Don Jones (20) added two more TDs in the third quarter before Hawai'i got two late scores from Akee Choy. A few days later, the Huskies beat a team called "Honolulu Townies," 35-6, before returning to Seattle. The Huskies opened the 1973 season with a 10-7 loss to the Rainbows (as they were known at the time) at Husky Stadium. The Dawgs scored their lone points on their second drive of the game as a one-yard run from Pete Taggares capped an 11-play drive. Later in the first quarter, Hawai'i got a 27-yard field goal from Reinhold Stuprich to make it 7-3. The Huskies had a chance for another score in the second quarter when the UW recovered a fumble on the Hawaii 23, but Taggares lost a yard on a fourth-down run from the one, and then missed a 35-yard field goal in the final minute of the half. Hawaii took the lead for good in the third quarter when Casey Ortez hit Abe Brown with 24-yard pass. In the fourth, the UW squandered chance after chance, fumbling the ball at the Hawaii 23-yard line with 13:05 left and at the Rainbows' eight-yard line with 7:48 remaining. The Dawgs then got the ball back on a fumble, but Denny Fitzpatrick's fourth-down pass from the Hawaii 17 was intercepted. The Rainbows then ran the final 3:37 off of the clock to hang on for the win. The game featured five interceptions (three from UW, two from Hawaii) and 13 fumbles (six lost: two from UW, four from Hawai'i). After the game, Hawai'i coach Dave Holmes called it "the biggest win ever for me." In 2007, the Huskies and Warriors closed out the regular season at Aloha Stadium as Hawai'i capped a perfect 12-0 year with a 35-28, come-from behind win. Washington built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter on one TD run from Jake Locker and two from fullback Luke Kravitz. After the first of five TD passes from UH quarterback Colt Brennan cut the lead to 21-7, UW fullback

T e A m N O T e SPaul Homer scored on a one-yard run to make it 28-7. From there, Brennan took over, tossing two more TD passes in the second quarter (28-21 at half) and two more in the fourth (including the game-winner with 0:44 remaining) to pull out a remarkable 35-28 win, one of the most important victories in UH football history. In 2011 in Seattle, the Huskies held on to beat the Warriors, 40-32. In just his second start, Keith Price completed 18-of-25 for 315 yards and four touchdowns while Chris Polk rushed for 107 and a score. Hawai'i's Bryant Moniz was 31-for-45 for 333 yards and a TD. Washington actually led the game 21-0 after a quarter, but Hawai'i scored a pair of TDs (one of them on a 99-yard interception return from Richard Torres) in the second to close the gap. Hawai'i got it as close as five points in the fourth quarter, but the Huskies closed out the win on a defensive conversion from Desmond Trufant to account for the eight-point gap.

OTHeR GAmeS IN HAWAII: Aside from the Huskies game vs. Hawaii in the 1938 Pineapple Bowl, the Huskies have played several other games in Hawaii, in both the Aloha and Oahu Bowls, posting an overall record of 4-3. Here all the Huskies games in Hawaii:

    Jan. 1, 1938 Washington 53, Hawaii 13 Pineapple (Poi) BowlJan. 6, 1938 Washington 35, Honolulu Townies 6 after Pineapple BowlDec. 25, 1982 Washington 21, Maryland 20 Aloha BowlDec. 26, 1983 Penn State 13, Washington 10 Aloha BowlDec. 25, 1997 Washington 51, Michigan State 23 Aloha BowlDec. 25, 1998 Air Force 45, Washington 25 Oahu BowlDec. 1, 2007 Hawaii 35, Washington 28 regular season

WASHINGTON-HAWAII TIeS: Washington has a long history of recruiting in Hawaii, so its no surprise that there are close ties between the two pro-grams, including a few players who spent time at the opposite school. Firstly, however, among coaches: Washington running backs coach Keith Bhonapha was a four-year letterman at Hawaii and also began his coaching career there as a GA in 2003-05. He earned both a bachelors and masters degree from UH. Hawaii running backs coach Wayne Moses earned four letters (1973, 1975-77) as a DB at Washington and also coached at the UW under Jim Lambright and Rick Neuheisel. As for players, Washingtons roster includes Brian Clay, who spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons at Hawaii before transferring to the UW. Taz Stevenson played the last four years at Washington before earning his degree and transferring to UH for the 2014 season. The UW roster includes four players who prepped in Hawaii: OL Shane Brostek (Hawaii Prep), OL Micah Hatchie (Waialua), OLB Hauoli Kikaha (Kahuku) and OLB Psalm Wooching (Kealakehe). There is just one Washingtonian on the UH roster, DB Dee Maggitt, who at-tended Lakes. Wooching attended Kealakehe with UHs Eli Asotui while Kikaha went to Kahuku with John Waa, Rashaan Falemalu, Benetton Fonua. Hatchie and UHs Hunter Thomson went to Waialua. Other UW and UH players from the same high school: UWs Brandon Beaver and Damion Turpin and UHs Donyeh Patterson (Dominguez (Patterson played there as a junior)); UWs Mike Criste and UHs Kealii Kauahi and Anthony Pierce (Mission Viejo); UWs Derrick Brown and UHs Jeremy Castro (Vista Murrieta); UWs Jermaine Kelly and UHs Ikaika Woolsey (Salesian); UWs Shaq Thompson and UHs Trayvon Henderson.

DAWGS VS. THe mWC: Washington has a pretty fair amount of history with the current (2014 season, that is) members of the Mountain West Conference. Washington has played all but three (Colorado State, New Mexico and UNLV) of the 12 schools that comprise the MWC. All totaled, the Huskies are 27-10 against current MWC members, Here's the breakdown: 2-6 vs. Air Force; 2-1 vs. Boise State; 2-1 vs. Fresno State; 3-1 vs. Hawai'i; 1-1 vs. Nevada; 3-0 vs. San Diego State; 10-0 vs. San Jose State; 2-0 vs. Utah State; and 2-0 vs. Wyoming.

1,000-YARD STReAk: With back-to-back stellar seasons the last two years, Bishop Sankey has extended to five the Huskies current streak of 1,000-yard individual rushing seasons. Last year, the Doak Walker Award finalist broke the UW record with 1,870 rushing yards. The year before, he ran for 1,439. Sankey was just the 11th different player in UW history to rush for 1,000 yards and his seasons was the 16th and 17th 1,000-yard season in school history. In each of the last five seasons, the UW has produced a 1,000-yard back. Chris Polk reached the benchmark each of his three seasons as a starter, running for 1,113 (2009), 1,415 (2010) and 1,488 (2011). Polk and Sankey were the fourth and fifth Huskies ever to rush for 1,000 yards in more than one season.

FOUR BOWLS IN FIVE YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: By reaching a bowl game last year for the fourth season while just five years removed from a winless season, Washington pulled off a rare feat. The Huskies were just the second team in the last 50 years of major college football to have gone from winless to four bowl games within five seasons. The only other program to accomplish that feat is Florida (winless in 1979; bowl games in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983).

THe PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. Last year and in 2013, the Huskies dont face Utah or USC.

cApTAINS: Washington will utilize game-by-game captains this season. As each games captains are revealed, theyll be listed below.

THe 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 191-60-3 (.758) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies are 7-2 this season. The Dawgs were 5-2 in such games last season.

HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 89 times. The Huskies record stands at 74-14-1 (.837) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 49-11-1 (.811) when rushing for 200 yards.

HUSkY STADIUm ReNOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major reno-vation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower bowl and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility fea-tures a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches offices) in the west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com.

HISTORIC HUSkY STADIUm: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a 38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2014 season marks the 94th season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. UWs all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 363-170-21 (.674).
