Arise

I love to hear St. Christopher's wonderful choir Singing "I Will Rise"

The voice of Jesus is heard in the text today saying, "Arise"

When I am not feeling so well, I play the Sacred Land CD and

Closing my eyes I listen to the beautiful music.

By the time I hear "I Will Rise" I feel much better. I believe through the Sacred Heart of Jesus

We will Rise!

"West Side” Changing Lives Forever -

Bridges out of Poverty

Many of our efforts involve helping people with short term solutions to their needs instead of helping to elimi-nate their need. One way to provide long term help is a learning opportunity we call "West Side” Changing Lives Forever - Bridges out of Poverty. It is a joint ef-fort with Saint Anthony, Saint Christopher, Saint Gabriel and Saint Michael SVdP Conferences.

This training is a Facilitator supported, group based, study program conducted by 12 "Investigators". The Investigators are people who have decided to improve their lives in any of eleven areas including financial, spiritual, mental, etc. so they can move away from gov-ernment and other assistance.

The most recent class started Monday April 18. We still need Mentors, meals and childcare volunteers for the class. The training lasts about 18 weeks. For more in-formation about becoming a mentor please check out http://trustedmentors.org/

These people need our help. They have decided to im-prove their lives, how can you help? Is God calling you to share your skills or time?

If you would like more information on how you might be able to help please call or text Paul Guenin at 317-627-2309 or [email protected].

A MOMENT WITH FR DAN

Dear St. Christopher Parish, I hope it’s obvious from my homilies and my writing that I love to read. I love to read be-cause I love stories. Novels, essays, theology, philosophy, fantasy, sci-fi, history. You name it, I love it. Sadly, I feel that I've given short shrift to one of my favorite Catholic authors: GK Chester-ton. Now, many of us have heard of CS Lewis (known for his Chronicles of Narnia and Till We Have Faces) and JRR Tolkien (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) because of the movies that have been made. But Chesterton, in many ways, was the man who had the greatest influ-

ence on these great Christian authors. So, in an attempt to remedy this oversight, I am dedicating this week’s bulletin article to good old GK! For those who've never heard of Gilbert Keith Chesterton, he's not an easy man to sum up. He was a rather large man with an even larger sense of humor. A convert to the Catholic Church in 1922, he used his writings to spread the Gospel message. His keen intellect and wit gave his writing a very quotable, very enjoyable flow. And although his works may not be as popular as Lewis or Tolkien, I believe they are more poignant and hu-morous. So, rather than bore you with an in-depth study of his various novels, biographies, and theological works, I simply want to present the top ten quotes from Mr. Chesterton. I hope you find them as useful and funny as I do: 10. "If there were no God, there would be no atheists!" 9. "Marriage is a duel to the death which no man of honor should ever decline." 8. "Fairy tales are not told to teach children there are Dragons. Children already know there are Drag-

ons. They are told to teach them that Dragons can be killed." 7. "The difficulty of explaining 'why I am a Catholic' is that there are ten thousands reasons all amount-

ing to one reason: That Catholicism is true." 6. "The most incredible thing about miracles is that they happen." 5. "The real great man is the man who makes every man feel great." 4. "Let your religion be less of a theory and more of a love affair." 3. "I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness dou-

bled by wonder." 2. "The reason angels can fly is because they take themselves lightly." 1. When a newspaper was running an article asking its subscribers to write what they thought was

wrong with the world, GK Chesterton wrote the shortest response: Dear sir, I am. Yours truly, GK Chesterton So, there you go. GK Chesterton using humor to make his point. But my favorite passage of his is about being childlike in our faith: Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, 'Do it again'; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, 'Do it again' to the sun; and every even-ing, 'Do it again' to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appe-tite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we." If you enjoy these quotes as much as I do, I hope you seek out some of his writings. I would encourage start-ing with his Fr. Brown mystery novels and working your way up to Orthodoxy, The Man Who Was Thursday and The Napoleon of Notting Hill. Summer is upon us, and hopefully the longer days afford us more time to dive into some amazing books. Happy reading! Yours in Christ, Fr. Daniel Bedel Sed Lux Lucet In Tenebris
