Some of the cleverest, funniest and most romantic songs ever written came IURP�WKH�SHQ�RI�&ROH�3RUWHU��%HWZHHQ������ZKHQ�KLV�ÀUVW�VRQJ�´(VPHUHOGDµ�ZDV�featured in a now long forgotten Broadway revue, to his last score for a CBS television production of Aladdin in 1958, Porter crafted hundreds of songs for dozens of musicals: “Night and Day,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” ”My Heart Belongs to Daddy,” “Begin the Beguine,” “You’re the Top,” and on and on...

%XW�KLV�PXVLF�DQG�ZRUGV�DUH�PRUH� WKDQ� MXVW�HQGXULQJ� WXQHV��+H�ZDV� WKH� ÀUVW�successful composer/lyricist to move songs out of the simple sentimentality of Tin Pan Alley to explore subjects that, at the time, were thought too taboo for audiences. It was his urbane wit and musical complexity that won audiences over and the affection of the entire world.

This year being the 50th anniversary of Cole Porter’s death, it seems appropri-ate to take a moment to relish his clever melodies and witty lyrics in this funny and touching musical. High Society, the story of Tracy Samantha Lord’s impending nuptials, started life in 1939 as Philip Barry’s play The Philadelphia Story, starring Katharine Hepburn. The following year, +HSEXUQ�WRRN�WKH�SOD\�WR�+ROO\ZRRG��DQG�VWDUUHG�LQ�WKH�ÀOP�YHUVLRQ�RSSRVLWH�&DU\�*UDQW�and James Stewart. Hepburn and Stewart were nominated for Academy Awards for WKH�ÀOP��EXW�RQO\�6WHZDUW�HQGLQJ�XS�ZLQQLQJ����+HSEXUQ�ZRXOG�HYHQWXDOO\�ZLQ�IRXU�RI�KHU�own, so she probably didn’t regret the loss.) Sixteen years later, Cole Porter (see Writer bio) would add music – ten new songs to be performed by no less than Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Louis Armstrong. In 1998, the story came back to Broadway, with Porter’s songs still attached.

When we meet Tracy Lord, with her mother and younger sister Dinah, she is busy preparing for her second wedding at the estate of her rather absent-minded Uncle Willie. It doesn’t WDNH�ORQJ�IRU�KHU�ÀUVW�KXVEDQG��&�.��'H[WHU�+DYHQ��WR�DUULYH��EHDULQJ�QHZV�WKDW�KH�KDV�invited a couple of tabloid reporters from Spy magazine to cover her wedding.

Sure as point-and-shooting, writer Mike Connor and photographer Liz Imbrie arrive to work undercover on their inside scoop article. In order to keep Spy readers unaware of the Lord family’s marital problems, Tracy introduces Uncle Willie as her father, which only works out until Tracy’s father Seth shows up himself.

Although alcohol has embarrassed her in the past, the situation drives her back to drink.

Everyone’s memory is a bit foggy the next morning, but not foggy enough to keep George from leaving. Mike and Liz remember that they never wanted to be millionaires, Tracy’s parents have reunited, and love is in the air. But with the wedding planned and guests arriving, who will be the groom? It seems that sometimes “just one of those things” can turn out to be “true love” after all.

David Hunter Koch (Director) has been performing, directing and producing for over 30 years in Seattle and regional theatres around the country including 5th Ave.Theatre, Seattle Rep, ACT, Intiman, Milwaukee Rep. and MetroStage in Washington DC. His own theatre, Cabaret de Paris garnered over 40 awards for theatrical excellence and he was named Theatrical Entre-preneur of the Year by The Seattle Weekly. David has performed with such notables as: Kevin Spacey, Kate Mulgrew, Reid Shelton, Terrance Mann, Steve Martin and Bill Irwin. He has narrated musical works for the Seattle Symphony and directed concert videos for performers David Byrne and Pat Metheny. Currently, he is the Executive Director for Sing Out Seattle, creating educa-tional and summer programs for young musical theatre performers. Last season, David directed SHOWTUNES hit production of Singin’ In the Rain at Benaroya Hall. David also proudly serves on SHOWTUNES’ Board of Directors.

Martin Charnin (Artistic Director) is celebrating his 57th year in the entertainment industry. His career began in 1957 creating the role of Big Deal, one of Jerome Robbin’s authentic juvenile delinquents, in the original company of WEST SIDE STORY. He played the role for exactly 1000 per-IRUPDQFHV��6LQFH�WKHQ�KDV�EHHQ�LQYROYHG�LQ�RYHU�����WKHDWULFDO��WHOHYLVLRQ��ÀOP��DQG�QLJKW�FOXE�SUR-ductions. He is one of the dozen people who have won Emmys, Tonys, and Grammys, but he has \HW�WR�ZLQ�DQ�2VFDU��7KLV�PLJKW�FKDQJH�LQ�������ZKHQ�6RQ\�SLFWXUHV�UHOHDVHV�WKH��UG�ÀOP�YHUVLRQ�RI�his iconic musical Annie. Production Team Authors&ROH�3RUWHU The legendary composer of “Night and Day” and “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)” was the only child of Samuel Fenwick, a druggist, and Kate Cole, the American songwriter and musician. An early learner of the violin and SLDQR��KH�KDG�ZULWWHQ�KLV�ÀUVW�VRQJ��´6RQJ�RI�WKH�%LUGV�µ�E\�WKH�age of ten. His mother had his piece “The Bobolink Waltz” published a few years later. Sent to prestigious Worcester Academy in Massachusetts, he went on to Yale, where he wrote two of their best-known football songs, “Bull Dog” and “Bingo Eg Tale.”

Koo, in 1919. After writing the score for Within the Quota, a jazz ballet in 1923, he decided to move to New York, and, in 1928, debuted on Broadway with Paris which included

the song “Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall In Love.” This was followed by Fifty Million Frenchmen, which featured “You Do Something To Me” and “You’ve Got That Thing.” Throughout the 1930s, Porter could do no wrong, with shows such as The New Yorkers, Gay Divorcee, Jubilee, and

Dubarry was a Lady. He also wrote the scores for many Hollywood movies, such as Rosalie and Born to Dance. In 1948, Porter came up with Kiss Me Kate, his biggest success, followed by Anything Goes. He also continued to work in Hollywood, writing the scores for two Fred Astaire movies, Broadway Melody of 1940, which featured “I Concentrate On You,” and “You’ll Never Get Rich.” He later wrote the songs for the Gene Kelly/Judy Garland musical The Pirate. The movie musical High Society (1956), starring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly, had Porter’s last major hit, “True Love.”

Porter died from kidney failure on 15 October 1964. He was 73.

Arthur Kopit is the author of Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and

Current projects include Discovery of America, a new play based on the journals of Cabeza de Vaca; an original musical, Lewis & Clark (score by Donald Alan Siegal); an original musical, Tom Swift and the Secrets of the Universe (score by David Yazbek); and an RULJLQDO�ÀOP��Miami. Besides teaching playwriting at NYU, Mr. Kopit heads the Lark Theatre’s Playwrights’ Workshop and is on the council of the Dramatists Guild.

Susan Birkenhead wrote the additional lyrics for High Society and the lyrics for Triumph

of Love. She received a Tony nomination and Drama Desk Award for her lyrics for Jelly’s Last

Jam. She was one of the writers nominated for a Tony Award for Working and won an Outer Critics Circle Award for What About Luv? She wrote Zhivago with Mr. Kopit and Lucy Simon and The Night They Raided Minsky’s with Charles Strouse and Evan Hunter. She wrote additional lyrics for High Society, with a book by Arthur Kopit and a score by Cole Porter. She wrote lyrics for Pieces of Eight with Jule Styne and Michael Stewart, Fanny Hackabout

Jones with Erica Jong and Lucy Simon, and was one of the contributors to A My Name Is Al-
