NO LONGER AN 'UNSOLVED MYSTERY'
LT. LINCOLN BUNDY'S GRAVE DISCOVERED Whatever happened to LL Lincoln Bundy, a
486th pilot, on June 10, 1944 has remained a real mystery to not only his parents, but apparently to the U.S. government as well, for almost 52 years.
Recently, however, President Dick De Bruin was contacted by an English writer-historian for information on Lt Bundy and providing us with a
solution to that mystery, an exciting revelation to those of us working closely with the 352nd's history.
On both our Association trips to England we
have visited the American Cemetery near Cam- bridge and seen Lt Lincoln Bundy's name on the "Wall of Missing" along with some 15 other 352nd
pilots. Now, at least, we know what happened to
Lt Bundy--but neither his family nor the U.S. gover- were aware of this disclosure-until we told them.
Our English contact, Paul McCue, advised us he
is soon to publish a book on "Operation Bulbasket ",
an operation conducted by a squadron of the 1st
Special Air Service Regiment and ending as a
major tragedy of war. The majority of the S.A.S.
troopers were captured and subsequently executed
by their German captors. At that time, the troopers were "harbouring" a
downed U.S. fighter pilot, Lt Lincoln D. Bundy. Despite Bundy's status as a non-member of these
'Special Forces', he was executed along with the
30 captured S.A.S. members. "The three mass graves of the dead were found
in December, 1944 after liberation," McCue writes. Reburial took place in the nearby village cemetery
in Rom in the Deux-Sevres region. McCue went on to say: "Since completing my
book, I have come across information which sugg-
est that Lt Bundy was a member of the 352nd FG,
shot dawn Th P519 43-7152 by flak on 10 June 1944
near Istres." Checking our 352nd records we found that the
Utah pilot had only reported into the Group a few
days before D-Day and had only flown a few com-
bat missions prior to going down. 486th pilot Joe
Geist recalls that they were strafing some enemy
trucks and that Bundy was apparently hit by Ger-
man groundfire and crashed. Lt Bundy was apparently picked up by French
Resistance forces (The Maquis) and turned over to the S.A.S. squadron a few days later. Then, when
the Squadron was captured while harassing enemy
communications and transportation facilities, he
was executed, too. We (DeBruin and I) I were quite excited by this
news and immediately wondered if the Bundy family knew about this and, if not, did the govern-
ment know. While Dick DeBruin was obtaining

more information from Mr. McCue, your Editor wrote to the Sheriff of Washington County in Utah
to see if the family could be located. On receiving my letter, Sheriff Glenwood
Humphries called me to say he lived only a few
blocks from Bundy's sister, Mrs Dell Wood, and
she said the family had no previous knowledge of
this news. Subsequently, we have also taken appro-
priate action to advise U.S. government authorities. Meantime, Dick DeBruin has talked with Bundy's
sister and learned that Lincoln was one of 16 child-
ren, eleven of them boys. The parents are deceased,
but the Bundy clan gathers each year for a reunion
and they are most eager to get all the details avail-
able from this discovery, which we will try to obtain
and furnish. Although we only have photo copies sent by Mr
McCue, we are hoping to obtain actual photos from
him for the family and our historical records. We
also plan to get a copy of Mr. McCue's book when
it is published. Keep tuned for more on this story.
8th AFHS MEMBERSHIP DRIVE Many of you may have received a letter from the 8th
Air Force Historical Society soliciting your membership,
and that choice is yours, of course. However, there is
a lot of controversy having to do with the current leader-
ship of the Society. It appears that current policies and
actions of the Society are not in the best interest of au
Eighth Air Force veterans, and until these issues are
resolved we are not encouraging our members to join.
Please note. however. that this has nothing to do
with the Eiahth Air Force Heritage Museum. a com-
pletely separate entity and not part of the Society.
Membership and participation in the Eighth's Heri-
tage Museum proiect is enthusiastically encourag- ed and endorsed by the 352nd's leadership.

SUBJECT: Identification of World War II Decedent 2nd Lt Lincoln D. Bundy, 0-E04996
TO: The Lilitary Attache American Embassy London, England
1. This headquarters is endeqvoring to recover and identify the remains of 2nd Lt Lincoln D. Bundy, 0-804996, USAAF, who was the pilot
of a P-51 type fighter aircraft, which was last seen in the vicinity of La :eilleraise, France on 10 June 1944. Accordind to information acquired through French and British sources, Lt Bundy survived the
crash of his Aircraft and made contact with a unit of the British 1st
SAS Regiment. On 3 July 1944, he was captured, together with thirty (30)
members of that unit, and the entire group was executed in the forest of
St Sauvant, Deux-Sevres, France. All of the renains were then interred
in the local cemetery of Rom, France.
2. Subseouent investigation and disinterment of these graves by
British Graves Registration personnel disclosed that thirty (30) of the
remains were clothed in battle dress, whereas one (1) was in civilian
clothes. It was then assumed that the later mentioned remains were those
of Lt Bundy and they were consequently released to an American Graves
Registration Unit. Of the thirty remains the British were able to iden-
tify four (4) of them individually. The remainder were collectively named as the rest of the British casualties.
3. Processing in the Central Identification Laboratory revealed that the released remains were not these of the American decedent. They
were resultantly designated as Unknown X-331, USMC Champigneul, France.
4. Negotiations to obtain permission to examine the collective
graves of the British casualties were then initiated through the Imperial
War Graves Commission. This proposal was categorically refused but the
Commission offered instead to accept custody of Unknown X-331 for interment
in the collective graves and to commemorate Lt Bundy with the group in
accorance with the existing agreement, between our governments, wherein

group burials of British and US Deceased, the country having the prepon- derance of casualties retains the custody of the group and commemorates the other's casualties.
5. The Office of the Quartermaster General contends that the rule applicable to such groups does not apply in this instance inasmuch as no evidence exists that the remains in the collective graves are mangled or co-mingled. Thus anthropological processing by qualified technicians would result in the individual identification of Lt Bundy and possibly the British casualties.
6. The Commission was again informed of O'TG's position and the fact that we are prepared to furnish the necessary technicians and bear all costs incident to the proposed operation.
'7. Information contained in an informal letter to the RAF Liaison Officer, this headquarters, indicates that the Commission will not re- consider their previous decision and that a reply to this effect is being forwarded through diplomatic channels.
8. The above cited facts are provided, herein, to acquaint your Office with the c,se so that appropriate action can be taken to present the American viewpoint to the offices concerned, when you receive the Imperial War Graves Commission reply.

STATEMENT OF INVESTIGATION
1. Subject decedent was pilot and sole occupant of a P-51 type
aircraft which was last seen in the vicinity of La Meilleraise, France
on 10 June 1944. According to information acquired through French and
British sources, Lt. Bundy survived the crash of his aircraft and made
contact with a unit of the British 1st SAS Regiment. He was caotured
with the thirty (30 members of that unit on 3 Jul v 1944, and the entire
group was executed in the forest of St. Liauvant, Deux-Sevres, France.
All the remains were interred in the local cemetery of Rom, France.
2. Investigation and disinterment of these graves by British
Graves Registration personnel disclosed that thirty (30) of the remains
were clothed in battle dress and one in civilian clothes. Tt was be-
lieved that the remains clothed in civilian clothes were those of Lt.
Bundy, and they were released to American ',raves Re-istration Service.
Four (4) of the thirty (30) remains have been individually identified
and the remaining twenty-six (26) were collectively named as British
casualties.
3. Subsequent processing of the remains believed to be Lt. Bundy
established unfavorable physical characteristics and dental comparison.
The remains were designated Unknown X-331, Champigneul.
4. Attempts to secure permission from the British War Graves Com-
mission to process the twenty-six casualties resulted in refusal. (Tab A)
In a final attempt to gain permission for exhumation of the British cas-
ualties, the State Department was requested to take up the case with the
proper authorities (Tab B). Reply (Tab C) received through the State
Department indicates that the Foreign Office is unable to modify the terms
of the British agar Gra'res Commission.
5. All possible efforts have been made to gain permission for the
exhumation of the twenty-six British casualties with negative results.
It is therefore concluded that the remains of Lt. Bundy are nonrecoverable.

SUBJECT: Identification of World War II Deceased
14 March 1951
1. The investigation conducted by this Office and the 7887 Graves
Registration Detachment, Liege, Belgium, to recover and/or identify
the remains of Second Lieutenant Lincoln D. Bundy, 0-804996, has
resulted in the conclusion that the remains designated Unknown X-331,
USL'C Champigneul, France, recovered from the Communal Cemetery, Ron,
France, are those of a British subject and that the remains of Lieutenant
Bundy are included in the interment in 26 graves of the Communal
Cemetery, Rom, France.
2. Lieutenant Bundy was the pilot and sole occupant of a P-51
aircraft, number 43-7153, which was last sighted on 1C June 1944, near
La Mailleraye, France, while on an area patrol mission.
3. On 5 December 1945, a British Captain, J. Fraser T:LLuskey,
reported that "Lt Bundy, who had apparently bailed out somewhere in
France during the summer of last year, was captured by the Germans,
along with one of our Squadrons which he had joined, and (etas) shot
along with, on or about 7 July 1944. He is buried, along with 30
members of the Squadron in Rom, Deux Sevres, France (France 1/250,000
Sheet 20. U 2946)". Four of the 30 remains have been individually
identified as British subjects.
4. An investigation at Rom, France, by American Graves Registration
Service Personnel, European Area, resulted in the recovery of remains
believed to be those of Lieutenant Fundy through the inscription on
the cross marking the grave. Subsequent examination of the remains
revealed physical characteristics and dental features which cannot be
associated with those recorded for Lieutenant Bundy. It is therefore
apparent that an administrative error occurred in recording the
initial interment in the Comunal Cemetery at Rom, France, and that the remains now designated Unknown X-331 are those of a British subject.
The remains of Lieutenant Bundy have not been recovered because of the
administrative error.
5. The Head Office of the Imperial War Graves Commission, French
District, ARRAS, has expressed the view that the grave containing 26
British burials should not be opened. The Commission assured that,
should the remains of Unknown X-331 be returned for reburial in the
collective grave at Rom, they will commemorate Lieutenant Bundy, USAAF,
there in accordance with the terms of the agreement with the United
States Government (concerning Group Burials involving decedents of both
nations. (See Incl l)

became a casualty and individual identification of his remains was
established at the time of interment in the Communal Cemetery at Ron,

exist and that the major identifying features are present. Therefore,
this Office is extremely reluctant to inform the next of kin of a

7. The American Embassy, London, England, received from the

through the RAF Liaison Officer to the Imperial War Graves Commission,

in Rom Communal Cemetery, France. The Foreign Office referred to the
basic agreement between the British and American Governments in which
it was decided that final disposition concerning a mixed grave should
rest with the nation whose dead were in the majority, and that correspondence on the subject of mixed graves should be conducted
through diplomatic channels. (See Incl #3)

graves in the Connunal Cemetery at Rom, France, that the remains of
Lieutenant Bundy were individually identified at the time of interment,

mixed graves applicable.

5th December 1945
Dear Colonel Power,
I understand that the location of the grave of the crew of
one of your aircraft, which crashed on the night of 18th/19th July 1944 in Nievre, France, has already been brought to your notice.
The crew are buried near the village of Marigny ltEglise, which is not far from Lormes in the Nievre. The pilot of the aircraft was Lt. Michaelson and I understand that the plane was a Liberator.
At the time of the crash, I was operating with one of the squadrons behind the German lines in the Nievre and your aircraft collided with a British plane which they were attempting to sup-
ply our area. Both aircraft fell in the area of our camp. I
buried the members of the American crew.
The crew of the British aircraft, which fell nearer the main road, were buried by the Germans in the local parish cemetery where a monument has been raised to the members of both crews by the local villagers. I enclose a snap of the monument and a copy of the inscription which is not clear on the snap.
If there is any further information which I could supply, or
if there is anything I can do for the next-of-kin, I shall be glad if you will let me know.
7 I should also be glad to have from the name and address of
the next-of-kin of 0-804996 Lt. Bundy (Lincoln D.) U.S.A.A.F. Lt. Bundy, who had apparently baled out somewhere in France dur- ing the summer-Oflast year, was captured by the Germans along with one of our Squadrons which he had joined and shot along with them on or about 7th July 1944. He is buried, along with 30 members of the Squadron, in Rom, Deux Sevres, France. (France 1/250.000 Sheet 20, 13.2946).
I do not know whether the location of this grave has already been notified to you or not, but I should be glad to write to his next-of-kin acquainting them with the circumstances of his death.
I am, Yours faithfully
a/J. Fraser McLuakey.
P.S. I have notified the location of the grave at Rom to D.A.D.G.R Major Ratcliffe, 20 Rue Pasteur, BORDEAUX, who is registering British war graves in that area.

There is enclosed a letter dated April 3, 1951 from
the Department of the Army, with its enclosures, regarding the
desire of the Army to recover the remains of Second Lieutenant Lincoln D. Bundy, interred in the Communal Cemetery at Rom. It will be seen that through an administrative error the remains
of Lt Bundy have not been recovered. In view of this administrat- ive error and since it does not appear that the grou7) remains
which include those of Lt Bundy are co-mingled, it is honed that
the Imperial War Graves Commission will reconsider its decision reported in the despatch under reference.

1. This headquarters is endeavoring to recover and identify the remains of 2nd Lieutenant Lincoln D. Bundy, 0-804996, USAAF, who was the pilot of a P-51 type fighter aircraft, which was last seen in tie vicinity of La :Seilleraise, France on 10 June 1944. According to infonna: ion acquired through French and British sources, Lt Bundy survived the crash
of his aircraft and made contact with a unit of the British 1st SAS Regiment. On 3 July 1944, he was captured, together with thirty (30) members of that unit, and the entire group was executed in the fercit of St Sauvant, Deux-Sevres, France. All of the remains were then interred in the local cemetery of Ran, France.
2. Subsequent investigation and disinterment of these graves Sy British Graves Registration personnel disclosed that thirty (30) of the remains were clothed in battle dress, whereas one (1) was in civilian
clothes. It was then assumed that the later mentioned remains were those
of Lt Bundy and they were consequently released to an American Graves Registration Unit. Of the thirty remains the British were able to iden- tify four (4) of them individually. The remainder were collectively named as the rest of the British casualties,
3. Processing in the Central Identification Laboratory revealed
that the released remains were not those of the American decedent. They
were resultantly designated as Unknown 1-331, USMC Champigneul, France.

Embassy's despatch no 4024, February 28, 1951, entitled "Mixed Grave at Ram Communal Cemetery. France."
There is enclosed a letter dated April 3, 1951 from -
the Department of the Army, with its enclosures, regarding the 2
desire of the Army to recover the remains of Second Lieutenant r-
Lincoln D. Bundy, interred in the Communal Cemetery at Worn. It will be seen that through an administrative error the remains m of. Lt Bundy have not been recovered. In view of this admInistrat=2" ive error ana, since it does not appear that the group remains which include those of Lt. Bundy are co-mingled, it is hoped that the Imperial War Graves Commission will reconsider its decision reported in'the despatch under reference.
Please take this matter up with the appropriate author- ities and report to the Department.

Dear Amlong:
41
2 April 1951
Our friends in the Department of State have been quite disturbed by your action in taking up direct with the British, the cases of second Lieutenant Lincoln D. Bundy, 0-804996, and Corporal George C. Miller, 35381016.
In the case of Bundy, the British protested through our Embassy in London that we had gone out of channels, and in the case of Miller, a member of the Embassy Staff expressed a similar view.
While there is no desire here to restrict informal liaison with the operating personnel of other na'ionalities actually engaged in graves registration aotivities, our friends in the Department of State feel that approaches to United States diplomatic missions and foreign governments should be made only through our established channel here. The Department of State then will determine the proper action.
I am inclined to agree that at this stage in our operations there is nothing so urgent that it cannot be taken up through this Office with the Department of State. This course will avoid both embarrassment and confusion such as we now are suffering in connection with the un- recovered dead in the Soviet occupation zone of Austria. There some- body speaking in behalf of the Army apparently has informed the United States diplomatic mission that there are only twelve unresolved cases, whereas here we know of nearly two hundred requiring further search.
Sincerely yours,
JAI TS B. CLEARWATER Colonel, QLIC

The plane was last sighted at 1015 hours an that day near LeMailleraye, France, under the conditions given in the following-quoted statement of Second Lieutenant William H Reese, 0701163, which is attached to the Crew Report:
"2nd LT LINCOLN D. BUNDY, 0-804996, AC, was flying Angus White Two and I van flying White Three.
"We had just finished strafing a group of trucks, one of which Lt Bundy destroyed, with our flight leader, Major STEPHEN W ANDREW, 0-429340, AC. I rejoined with Major Andrew and when the Major called to Lt. Bundy to rejoin formation there was no response.
"It Bundy was last seen in the area near La Mailleraye, France. The time was approximately 1015 hours."
3 Captured German Records, of record in this office, show a number of P-51 (Mustang) aircraft downed in the vicinity of Cherbourg and LeHavre, France, on 10 June 1944, but no association can be made with Lieutenant Bundy's aircraft, due to the difference in time.
4. The Office of The Quartermaster General, Memorial Division, (Miss Dyer) reports that Identification Section was endeavoring to associate X-331 Unknown with that of Lieutenant Bundy, but have set with negative results.

5.. In the absence of any definite information as to the fete of Lieutenant Bundy, of the location of the place where the plane crashed, it is concluded that the information of record in the Department of the Army, at this time, does not warrant the issuance of an official report of death under the provisions of Section 9, Missing Persons Act

Mr. James Bundy Mt. TruMbull, Arizona /
Dear Mr. Bundy:
4 (S-12-15-44) / JRI:VC:ma, ;
November 15, 1944
The Army Effects Bureau has received some personal
effects belonging to yoir son, Second Lieutenant Lincoln C.
Bundy.
I am inclosing a Last All and Testament and card which were found among your son's effects. he remainder of
his property is being forwarded in a footlocker and should
reach you in the near future.
My action in transmitting the property does not,
of itself, vest title in you. The items are forwarded in
order that you may act as gratuitous bailee in caring for
them pending the return of the owner, who has been reported
missing in action. In the event he later is reported a
casualty, and I sincerely hope he never is, it will be nec-
essary that the property be turned over to the person or
persons legally entitled to receive it.
When delive-y has been made, I shall appreciate
it if you will sign one copy of the inclosed receipt, indicat-
ing that you will act in the capacity stated, and return it
to this Bureau. For your convenience, there is inclosed an
addressed envelope which needs no postage.
I regret the circumstances proMpting this letter,
and wish to exnress my hope for the safe return of your son.
Yours very truly,
