THE INTRODUCTION

Immaterial is best described as having no essential consequences or simply laid out as unimportant and sometime, is deemed as irrelevant. However in the context of art, history has shown how far and vast the development of art has gone particularly in term of societal appreciation of art despite going against it.

The artist who integrates scraps of material onto their work is most likely romanticizing the death of garbage. Little that most would know, these types of artist are the people who are one choosing to prolong the life of things by rejuvenating them in an uplifting way.

There are three types of consumer. First, is the type who consumes the product up until the last drop. Second is the hoarder, the type of consumer who will save everything or whatever is left of the product. The last one is the selfless which is someone who would opt to recycle or repurpose the discarded item.

The choice of an artist to incorporate unconventional item as material in his/her art does not only change the form of the artwork per se, but it has also reconstructed what goes through on the craftsmanship and discipline of the artistic process.

IMMATERIAL ; A COMPILATION OF THE UNCONVENTIONALS

THE PROCESS

The hours take goes through the process begins with planning what material goes together with the narration of the story. The important of having a reason to justify an idea is a must as to avoid the gimmick of being inappropriate of over-zealously executed. Organic unity which comprises of three elements of subject, form and content is a basic layout of art making. The subject refers to what is going to be portrayed; the form refers to how the art-making process going to be like and the content refers to intention of why the visual is being conveyed. When dealing with unconventional material there is another additional elements which need to be considered which are the material and the space. The material refers to everything one artist need to know about it, be it the type, the shape, character, the tools needed to manipulate the material according to initial plan as far as the execution goes. Meanwhile, the space; although it can only be tested only after the artwork is presented to the audience, it falls under the artist’s responsibility to foresee and set the flow on how the audience can benefit the artwork from multiple views and angles.

Educational institutes such as art school covers art theoretically from the basic understanding of element of principles of art up to the history of art itself. Arguably, there is so much enlightenment or the know-how, step by step guide as to how to really make an artwork. That experience would only take place in a real situation of making the art itself. Just to be fair, there is aplenty of guide book on how to draw, how to paint and how to make a sculpture. Although, the option of going through that path is integral, those are the blueprint of the past artworks, the masterpieces and the has-beens.

Artist is a content creator; a man/woman who is blessed with talent to dissect the world and visually conjure an idea based on his/her observation through research and experience back into this world. The chance of an artist to replicate another artist’s work in an exact copy is highly unlikely due to different In the end, it is not how one falls under the conventional or the unconventional column. But, rather how the right unconventional pieces have all the possibility to be accepted as a norm and how the wrongly-pieced conventional does not always work out.

THE UNCONVENTIONALS

Agnes Lau, Anisa Abdullah, Azizi Latif, Bakir Baharom, Fazrin Abd Rahman, Jamil Zakaria, Nor Tijan Firdaus and Yim Yen Sum.

Agnes uses clay in most of her art. But that does not mean that she makes the typical ceramic fine art sculptures usually seen in Japanese pottery shop. However, she uses it as a medium to portray her leniency towards minimalism and the quality of lines in a pursuit of conveying his thoughts on life.Anisa retrieves strips of bits and pieces from reading material to form images. Her subject varies from portrait of friends and family or iconic figures, urban landscape, automobile. The marriage between the thought of a person or item jells together well with the melancholic touch of the collaged-canvas. Talk about breathing life to the artwork.

Azizi Latif constructed outline using boxboard cut out forming images which is rich with relief surface.Azrin updates his weapon of choice by benefiting from the three-dimensional printing technology sculpture. Azrin delves in social commentary which covers national issues of politic and economy to name a few. As an observer, the artwork’s direction reserves more on preserving the history through his documentation of specific events and occurings.

Bakir manipulates sooth to create his desired image by burning flammable item. The degree of difficulty to control the outcome is admirably astonishing. The quality and the gradient of sooth is replicable by any means but to use the real deal is something else. Bakir thrives in his sooth rendering just like any artist given a pencil to work with.

Fazrin and wall piece sculpture of his is a testament to the artist’s mastery in metal weaving. The calculated precision of every interwoven layer is then being balanced by the abstraction that goes on top of it before adding and subtracting appropriate color palette to the work.

Jamil manages to piece wire meshes together to construct his subjects three-dimensionally before presenting it in installation manner. Through his heavily-lined hollow sculpture, the artist focuses the construction and the build of his subject. The approach can be equated with animal’s nervous system schematic, a view which is literally skin deep.

Nor Tijan uses discarded material which is relatively close to the narration of the story. Toys and e-waste is the usual suspect among her other favorite ingredients. The recycled pieces which were chosen by her are then strategically composed based on the form and context of her message.

Yen Sum sews together pieces of gauze to form cultural heritage building which is later done in black color. The quality of having black on black materials are the epitome of sophistication and classy. Perhaps, the choice of using black is a sign to signify the under shadow of the forgotten past. Nevertheless, the artist manages to rejuvenate her subject, just like bringing back the dead.
