NEWSLETTER OF THE JEBSEN GROUP VOL.UME 2 NO. 2 APR 2010

We have come a long way.

In just 500 years, mankind has gone from dreaming of flying machines to inventing aircraft, and today, to clocking frequent flyer miles.

This is just one of many examples of what a healthy imagination combined with a good dose of innovation and a drive to keep improving can achieve.

So in a way, is it really impossible to believe that the fantasy world in the Hollywood blockbuster Avatar could one day be reality?

While you stretch your imagination over a possible tomorrow of clones, intelligent alien lifeform and inter-galactic explorations, this issue of Moments looks at how innovation and technology is redefining life, work and play at the Jebsen Group today. Maybe not quite as dramatically.

Smart technology is now so advanced that digital cameras like the Pentax Optio I-10 marketed by Jebsen Consumer can be taught to recognise the faces of dogs and cats. Read about this in A camera that recognises your pet on page 2.

It used to be considered the stuff of Hollywood movies. These days, however, biometric technology like face detection and face recognition is all around us.

Rapid advancement in the field of face detection technology has made it so accessible and affordable that it is now a common feature in digital cameras.

How it works will sound surprisingly simple: The face detection function in a digital camera does not look for a face; it searches an image for certain facial markers. Once a combination of those are found, the camera locks onto the area around it, automatically focusses on it and adjusts the exposure accordingly.

So, if this can be achieved with human faces, why not that of dogs and cats?

Jebsen Consumer has in Mar 2010 launched the new Pentax Optio I-10, which can remember up to three dogs and cats. It quietly assigns facial markers to these faces, and the rest is straightforward.

WELCOMING A NEW DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGERJebsen Consumer strengthens China management team With contribution from Darren How

For Ms Maggie Chung, making the decision to relocate from Hong Kong to China to take up the role as Deputy General Manager for Jebsen Consumer was not an easy one, but one that she is confident will be fruitful.

“I joined Jebsen in a regional role, supporting our China operations. The more I get involved in the business and operations, however, the more eager I am to close the knowledge gap and deepen my understanding of the Chinese market. And the best way to do that is to move to China,” said Ms Chung.

In this new role which she took up in Mar 2010, Ms Chung is charged with helping to manage the marketing operations for Mainland China, driving Jebsen’s growth and delivering business results.

To this end, she will be responsible for enhancing existing principal relationships, exploring new business development opportunities and establishing new revenue streams.

Raised in Taiwan, she was schooled overseas before she started her career in Hong Kong. Culturally, Ms Chung is hopeful that her transition to life in China will be smooth.

To optimise use of the face detection function (which is most effective when the subject is looking straight into the camera), the Optio I-10 can be programmed to intelligently release the shutter when the subject turns to face it.

Asking the pet to recognise the camera is another thing altogether.

A fan without blades - truly innovative.

The Dyson DC31 handheld vacuum cleaner is powered by a digital V2 motor.

When a vacuum cleaner’s motor runs five times faster than a Formula One racing car’s engine, and a desktop fan is one of Time magazine’s best inventions for 2009, it is time to give home appliances a second look.

Thanks to research and development, a new generation of home appliances has emerged, doing more than just making household chores less tedious.

Keeping your family healthy, for example. In Hong Kong, 10-15 per cent of all children are asthmatic and 40 per cent of them are allergic to dust mites. Vacuuming certainly helps clean out dust and dirt, but what is the point if your vacuum cleaner spews air that is still heavy with bacteria and mould?

Dyson has patented a technology it calls Root CycloneTM which is smart enough to separate dust from air. Marketed and distributed by Jebsen Consumer, Dyson’s handheld vacuum cleaners capture dust and release air that contains up to 150 times less bacteria and mould.

Aside from floorboards, hard-to-reach places like the blades and grilles of fans are also breeding grounds for dust and dirt.

Dyson has easily removed that problem with its Air MultiplierTM bladeless fan. Named among last year’s top 50 inventions by Time magazine, the fan looks more like a modern art piece with its large ring structure and sturdy base.

What it does is channel air from its base to the ring structure above, and squeeze the air through a 1.3mm aperture along the front edge of the ring. This essentially accelerates the air speed by 15 times, creating a comfortable breeze. And of course, no blades means no accidents with children sticking their fingers where they do not belong.

It just goes to show that in this age of innovation, anything is possible.

What do you get when you cross cartoons with cameras?

Ask Jebsen Consumer, who has introduced two celebrity makeovers to refresh its popular Casio EX-Z90 digital camera.

Riding on Hello Kitty’s successful merchandise empire, Jebsen Consumer launched a pretty-in-pink Hello Kitty EX-Z90 model exclusively for the Korean market to celebrate the cat character’s 35th birthday.

For Hong Kong consumers, Jebsen Consumer chose the homegrown pig cartoon character Mcdull to be its celebrity draw.

With both limited edition models bringing in healthy sales, this could be a trend that is here to stay.

The limited edition models featuring Hello Kitty and Mcdull have been snapped up by fans.

BEER AND THE INTERNET – UNLIKELY FRIENDS?Jebsen’s Blue Girl Beer proves how the two can go together

To the man on the street, social media like Kaixinwang and Facebook are fun new ways to stay connected.

But for corporations like Jebsen, it can be a new way of marketing the business.

Jebsen’s Blue Girl Beer has been riding this wave of technological change, first by meeting its customers online at its bluegirlbeer.com website, then offering interactivity in the form of mini games on the site, and most recently, by befriending its customers on Facebook.

It even had an application custom-built for its Facebook page for Halloween 2009. The ghoulish game had users turn their Facebook friends into zombies in return for prizes, a challenge that more than 2,000 players were happy to take on.

Happy customers would have made the campaign successful enough, though the icing on the cake was the increased awareness of Blue Girl Beer’s other activities in the period, including its third-year sponsorship of Hong Kong’s Ocean Park Halloween Bash.

It was a win-win situation that Blue Girl Beer is keen to replicate in the days to come with other innovative ideas in the social media space.

Jebsen’s very own Blue Girl Beer brought additional cheer to China with a slew of activities for Chinese New Year.

At the grand reopening of Shanghai’s Westgate Mall in Feb 2010, Blue Girl Beer was invited to join the revelry. With an onsite promotional counter, Jebsen Beer staff had the opportunity to introduce the brand to customers, many of whom stocked up on Blue Girl Beer for the festive season.

Over in Guangzhou, Blue Girl Beer visited the night markets of the Sanshui, Foshan and Shunde districts from Jan 18-Feb 13, bringing the refreshing beer, an exciting game of blackjack and fantastic prizes to the customers.

With the first day of the Chinese New Year coinciding with Valentine’s Day on Feb 14, Blue Girl Beer was at a local Foshan bar in a celebration of romance. For the occasion, Blue Girl Beer fittingly gave away heart-shaped chocolates and pillows to customers.

A WIDER SELECTION OF WINES AND WATER Jebsen Fine Wines shows confidence in the Mainland Chinese market

In the first quarter of 2010 alone, at least five new brands of fine wines and high-end water from all around the world were brought to the Mainland Chinese market, thanks to Jebsen Fine Wines.

Chinese consumers are now spoilt for choice, with Jebsen Fine Wines distributing the sparkling wines of Germany’s Henkell vineyards, the Flechas wines of Argentina, the French rose wines of Chateau d’Esclans, the traditional port wines of Croft Port and the naturally sparkling mineral water of Italy’s Ferrarelle.

Developing its portfolio in Mainland China is a strategic move by Jebsen Fine Wines, which believes in the vast potential of the market. With economic indicators pointing toward a recovery in the global economy, Jebsen Fine Wines expects to capitalise on its leading position as a wine distributor this year.

Picture this: Man trying to impress his date at the finest restaurant in town. Waiter arrives with the wine… and couldn’t unscrew the metal cap.

Anti-climatic?

Before you decide, picture this alternate scenario: Corked bottle gets ceremoniously popped and glasses are filled. Man proposes toast, only to find the wine tastes like damp cardboard.

Worse?

This in a nutshell, illustrates the debate over bottle closures that winemakers have been divided over: cork vs screw caps.

The inherent problem with traditional cork closures, as depicted in the second scenario, is cork taint, a case where the cork breaks, crumbles or leaks and destroys the taste of the wine.

A little innovation has led winemakers to screw caps as a simple solution to this. No cork, no taint.

Air-tight screw caps can also protect the wine from too much exposure to air, which causes oxidisation, affects the wine’s flavour and significantly cuts short its shelf-life. Other alternatives like natural cork stoppers are relatively more expensive and its synthetic (usually plastic) corks certainly do not help protect the environment.

With so much in its favour, perhaps the greatest obstacle now for the screw cap is its perceived association with cheap wine, even though this no longer holds true.

Twinwoods - Margaret River of Australia, which is Jebsen Fine Wines’ very own brand marketed in China and Hong Kong, is an example of a premium label that opts to use screw caps to ensure the flavour and freshness of its wines.

A toast to smart ideas.

With the Copenhagen summit on climate change in Dec 2009 setting the stage for the world to collectively reduce its carbon footprint, luxury automobile manufacturers are rising to the challenge too.

Greener, cleaner technology can now be found under the hoods of luxury cars like the latest Porsche 911 Turbo, unveiled at various Porsche Centres in the region operated by Jebsen Motors.

The model offers up to an 18 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to its predecessor, an environmentally-friendly achievement made possible thanks to technological advances.

“Great news! Rodolfo Avila is taking the wheel for Team Jebsen at the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia!

This won’t be his first time racing at the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia of course; surely we all remember his impressive debut last year and how he landed a pole position and podium finish.

The new team that he’s driving for this season, Team Jebsen, has had a fantastic run and won the championship twice in 2006 and 2008. Rodolfo might be feeling some pressure to maintain this track record, but he’ll do great with all of us rooting for him!

Rodolfo has achieved so much – starting out with karting in Macau, bringing home the Asian Formula Renault Championship in 2003 then.

Even though he is from a small city like Macau, he has managed to come so far partly thanks to companies like the Jebsen Group who choose to invest in local drivers.

Rodolfo’s first big race for Team Jebsen is in April in Shanghai. Let’s all wish him the best of luck!”

ReAd it Now!

Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) is a fuel-delivery technology that helps gasoline engines burn fuel more efficiently. In the Porsche 911 Turbo, this translates into more power (by about 20bhp), greater fuel economy (consumption is reduced by about 16 per cent) and cleaner emissions (of up to 18 per cent).

So thanks to greener cars like the new Porsche 911 Turbo, driving sustainability and eco-friendliness can still be a luxurious and powerful ride.

The unveiling of the Porsche 911 Turbo in Hong Kong was held in conjunction with the official opening of the new Porsche Centre Hong Kong on Mar 8. The new, state-of-the-art showroom is centrally located to serve customers better.

With visitorship expected at 17,000, the China International Boat Show from Apr 8-11 is a perfect platform to showcase the new Fairline Squadron 55 to mainland customers.

Exclusively marketed and distributed in China by Jebsen Marine, the Squadron 55 has won the prestigious ‘Motor Boat of the Year’ Award 2009 in the Flybridge Above 50ft category.

Jebsen Marine’s participation in the boat show is only the second major event overseen by Mr Lars Petersen in his capacity as General Manager, a role which he took on in Feb 2010.

Earlier in April, Jebsen Marine also took the SportRiva 55’ to the Hainan Rendezvous 2010.

Swiss luxury brand Raymond Weil is well-prepared to delight connoisseurs of luxury watchmaking with the latest member of its popular Nabucco collection.

The 2010 Nabucco Va, Pensiero Chronograph remains true to the collection’s powerful architecture, in sophisticated grey-grained graphite and a round bezel with tachometric scale set into titanium.

But what will truly excite watch-lovers is hidden beneath the watch’s stylish casing. An ETA 7753 tri-compax movement with automatic winding and 28,800 vibrations per hour promises almost two days of power reserve, while its screwed-down push-pieces, crown and case-back makes it waterproof to a depth of 200m.

With style, precision and resilience on its side, the Nabucco Va, Pensiero’s entrance is one to watch out for.

If you do not have to put up with the frustration of wrenching apart plastic bags that are stuck together, or bottle caps that won’t budge, you might have Jebsen Industrial’s Specialty Chemicals Division to thank.

A common problem faced by plastic bag manufacturers is that plastic bags tend to stick together. Yangzi BSAF, a customer of Jebsen Specialty Chemicals, was plagued by this until it was introduced to an anti-block agent additive.

The secret to keeping plastic bags in pristine condition is to apply this fine porous powder evenly onto its surface. It prevents the plastic layers from sticking together, and because it is used in small amounts, it does not affect the transparency of the bag. The additive is US FDA-certified to be safe enough even for direct contact with food.

You may not associate the food on your dining table with the clinical set-up of a research and development (R&D) laboratory, but the researchers at Jebsen Specialty Chemicals cook up a storm every day, with a little help from technology.

In the case of bottled drinks, beverage manufacturers like China’s Wahaha are challenged by a different problem – stiff bottle caps that are difficult to twist open.

For that, Jebsen Industrial’s brand partner Croda has a solution in the form of a slip agent. Applied onto a bottle cap, the solution reduces the friction between the cap and the bottle neck. The almost-odourless substance is safe to use and does not impart any taste even to mineral water.

With some help from Jebsen Specialty Chemicals, life is a little easier.

EXPERIMENTING WITH FOOD What technology, research and food have in common

Anti-block agent additive prevents the plastic layers from sticking together.

A slip agent makes the bottle cap easy to open.

Various high-technology instruments play a key role in research work.

How much salt does salad dressing contain, for example? To answer, researchers turn to a titration meter to break down the acid, akaline, salt and mineral content of a solution. With this instrument, even mineral water can be analysed for its calcium, magnesium and potassium concentrations.

It is also in this R&D laboratory that ice cream emulsions are prepared. As a pre-step to manufacturing ice cream, emulsions are first created with the laboratory’s high pressure homogeniser to blend immiscible liquids into a smooth homogeneous solution.

And to produce a stabliser that will help ice-cream keep its form, a high shear mixer hydrates xanthum gum – a common food additive also used in sauces. This instrument provides a quick, convenient way to mixing and dissolving solutions that are hard to achieve manually.

So the next time you treat yourself to ice cream, remember to give thanks to the unseen hand of technology.

A TRIBUTE TO FOUR DECADES OF DEDICATION Jebsen honours retiring Division Director Francis Lau

Jebsen Industrial’s business partners and clients will soon have more than 600 reasons to visit its new website at www.jebsenindustrial.com.

Phase one of the website was launched in Feb 2010, with more features to be gradually introduced. When complete, the website will be a one-stop shop for comprehensive information on over 20 industries, 150 industrial brands and more than 600 products that Jebsen Industrial offers.

This website demonstrates Jebsen Industrial’s commitment to engaging its business partners and customers across communication platforms. As more than just its online presence, the website is designed to help visitors identify suitable products through featured case studies, and stay abreast of industry happenings with the latest news and upcoming events.

“The Internet is an essential and key element nowadays for all businesses to succeed. By utilising web 2.0 functionality, more direct information about our advanced and best-selling products, as well as up-to-date news and activities, can be delivered to our partners and customers,” said Jebsen Industrial Director Lorenz Zimmermann.

“The website is actually one of our best marketing and sales frontliners that provides instant feedback to all visitors, always in a polite and professional manner with 24/7 capability.”

On Mar 5, 2010 Jebsen Industrial Division Director Francis Lau received a letter from Mr Heinrich Jessen in Singapore, congratulating him on his admission to the small and exclusive “club of 40” - a reference to Mr Lau’s 40th anniversary with the company.

“A true pioneer”, as Mr Jebsen called him, Mr Lau joined the Group’s Metals and Machinery Department in 1970, a time when the Chinese market was still a mystery to him.

He was stationed in Wuhan for 10 months after Jebsen was appointed as an agent for a West German Consortium in 1974, an

important historical project that paved the way for many large projects to come. Mr Lau was also entrusted to lead the department at Jebsen’s Beijing office when it resumed in 1978.

Thanking him, Mr Jebsen said: “Francis, you have been instrumental in building much of the reputation, image and status that the company now enjoys both with many of our overseas principals as well as our countless customers and partners in China.”

Mr Lau considers the 1980s to be a milestone in his working life.

“I was fortunate enough to receive the insightful and inspiring coaching from the late Mr Michael Jebsen, former Chairman of Jebsen & Co. His teaching and wisdom was crucial to both my personal life and career.”

He would like to thank his colleagues for treating him in an exceptionally kind and trustful manner, making his career in Jebsen memorable and fulfilling.

More hands make light work. While that may be true, in today’s business world, a computerised one does the trick too.

For a corporation as diverse as the Jebsen Group, just the coordination of functional units spread across Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Korea would be a headache.

That was why the Group decided to centralise data in one enterprise resource planning (ERP) system in Apr 2000, exactly 10 years ago.

The move to the Oracle ERP system that went online in Jan 2002 was a long but worthwhile one. An eight-month evaluation process was necessary to determine the Group’s business needs before implementation could begin.

Change management was also introduced in parallel with the implementation. All that took 20 months and involved 200 staff in different phases.

Once the ERP system went ‘live’, it threw out the legacy systems that needed 15-20 days to generate management reports. The introduction of the Business Intelligence System in 2003 further allowed up-to-date information with a few clicks.

Today, more than 400 employees tap onto the same system to help them with their daily work. Plans are on the horizon to finetune the system further with more extensive data analytics and customer relationship management.

government officials, foreign diplomats and luminaries of the Hong Kong society were among the 4,000 guests.

Speaking at the event, Mr Peng highlighted how China’s immense growth potential will benefit Hong Kong.

Mr Jebsen said: “With the government leading the way in bolstering economic growth, the Jebsen Group is ready to ride on new opportunities to further develop its business in the region.”

Sister group Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) prepares itself for a change in leadership as Group Managing Director Manoj Beri retires on May 31, 2010.

While this marks the close of a highly successful career that has spanned almost 40 years, Mr Beri will remain a member of the Group’s board of directors, which also includes Jebsen & Co Chairman Hans Michael Jebsen.

Mr Manoj Beri will retire after an illustrious career with Jebsen & Jessen (SEA).

The new Executive Board comprises (from left) Mr Heinrich Jessen, Mr Heine Askaer-Jensen and Mr Fritz Graf von der Schulenburg.

Following Mr Beri’s retirement, Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) will be helmed by a new three-member Executive Board comprising Mr Heinrich Jessen, Mr Heine Askaer-Jensen and newcomer Mr Fritz Graf von der Schulenburg from June 1.

A laywer by training, Mr von der Schulenburg brings with him a wealth of management experience from his prior role as Managing Director of Agantis Private Equity in Germany and numerous Executive Board appointments.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Fritz von der Schulenburg on board at this juncture,” said Mr Jessen. “His vast network in the German and international industry is very relevant for Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) as we wish to grow by leveraging our unique value proposition to attract more technology partners to work with us in ASEAN.”
