IMAT 2011 1 KEYNOTE SPEAKER PROFESSOR NASSER ASHGRIZ University of Toronto, Canada Title: Atomization of A Liquid Jet In A Crossflow Professor Ashgriz received his B.S. in 1979, M.S. in 1981 and Ph.D. in 1984 from the department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He then joined the department of Mechanical and Aerospace engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he stayed until 2002. He is currently a professor at the department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto. Professor Ashgriz is also a trained patent attorney. He received his J.D. in 1996 from the School of Law at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is admitted to the New York bar, as well as being a registered patent attorney with the U.S. patent and trademark office. Professor Ashgriz is world renowned for developing novel computational techniques for the modeling of free surface flows and interfaces; for conducting the seminal experiments which detailed the complicated process of the droplet collision and coalescence; for advancing several novel diagnostic methods for the spray characteristics, including tomographic imaging of sprays; for developing new models for the breakup mechanism of liquid masses into small droplets, the first ever model for this complicated process; for his contribution towards the development of better fuel injectors, and better solid and liquid propellant rocket engines; and for his contributions towards the development of better ink- jet printers. Because of the success of his computational model for the simulation of the free surface flows and interfaces, he formed Simulent Incorporation in 1999. Simulent Inc. is now a leading computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software development and engineering consulting company delivering the most advanced solutions for the design and testing of liquid spray nozzles such as fuel spray nozzles or splash plate atomizers for black liquor. Professor Ashgriz has more than 120 publications and numerous conference presentations and invited lectures. PROFESSOR STEVEN L. GARRETT The Pennsylvania State University, USA

Title: Thermoacoustic Engines and Refrigerators Steven Garrett received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1977. He continued his research on the use of sound to understand the hydrodynamics of quantum fluids at the University of Sussex in England (1978-79) and at the University of California at Berkeley (1797-1981). Garrett joined the faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School in 1982 where his research efforts were concentrated on the development of fiber-optic sensors and thermoacoustic refrigerators. At NPS he was the Principle Investigator on the Space Thermo-Acoustic Refrigerator launched on the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-42) in 1992, and the Shipboard Electronic Thermoacoustic Chiller used on the USS Deyo (DD-989) in 1995.

He left NPS in 1995 to assume his current position as Professor of Acoustics in the Graduate Program in Acoustics and as Senior Scientist at the Applied Research Laboratory, both at Penn State University where his research has focused on thermoacoustic chillers for commercial applications including an ice cream freezer for Ben & Jerry’s (2004). His laboratory also develops thermoacoustic prime movers for energy-related applications such as biomass cook stove electrical co-generation. Since 2008, Professor Garrett has also served the U.S. Department of State as a Senior Science Advisor for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs where he has focused on ASEAN countries and improvements to biomass-burning cook stoves. Dr. Garrett was one of the co-organizers of the ASEAN-U.S. Next-Generation Cook Stove Workshop that was held at the Asian Institute of Technology near Bangkok in 2009.

Garrett is one of the founders of the ThermoAcoustics Corporation. He is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the only recipient of their Silver Medal in Interdisciplinary Acoustics (Physical and Engineering Acoustics). He has twice received an R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine, the Naval Postgraduate School Menneken Research Award, a Popular Science Magazine Award for Environmental Technology, the Helen Caldecott Award for Environmental Technology, and the Rolex Award for Enterprise (environment category).
